Great question and point. What it does do is make companies more libel if a child is on the platform under 16 which isn't enough but is helpful. Honestly thus bill is great the only reason they don't like it is because it comes out of Florida.

@4:05 Sunny doesn't realize that intense helicopter parenting just makes kids more rebellious or more unhinged and maladjusted. you may think your kid doesn't have an account unless you have access and knowledge of it, but that's wildly naive, and based in a need to control. the ego of a parent is a powerful and deceptive thing

I agree Whoopi. I didn’t become “friends” with my parents until I became an adult. My dad laid down the law. As a kid, I didn’t understand nor did I like it. But as an adult, I FINALLY got it. He was tough but he prepared us for life and I’m grateful.

Absolutely agree. My parents and our relationship changed to more of a friendship/confidant type relationship when I turned 30. At 30, I had done all of the goofy-dumb stuff, spent money I didn't have (credit cards), late night partying, etc. After 30, I started to see what all those things my parents warned me about; I began to understand the lessons and my parent's points of view. I firmly believe, when you're raising your kids, your role in thier life is parent first and friend second or third. Your kids have plenty of friends but only 1 or 2 parents. Make sure they always understand that. Because friends come and go but the good parent(s) will always be there.

I completely agree, my 5&6 year olds tell me weekly that they hate me because I took the tablet, or they can’t find their toy so it’s my fault and they hate me. My only answer in 40 years of kids has been, well I love you. You’re going to do what I said, go to your room to cry and whine until we can’t talk about. They aren’t old enough to process those feelings without the social media telling them much more than their maturity levels allow.later she comes out of room, happy again.Only once I reminded her that she hated me and wants a different family 5 minutes ago. She said I don’t know why I was so mad, I love you mom.

However, while you're raising them to (hopefully) become productive, well-adjusted adults, they shouldn't take the place of you adult relationships. Your kid shouldn't be your confidant. That's called parent/child enmeshment when there are no defined parent/child boundaries. That kind of relationship will totally screw your kid up in adulthood. 💯

I sometimes have to put my foot down on certain things(5&6 yr old daughters) they want to start painting at 5 when I’m almost done with dinner; can’t do it. Very emotional-boys too at these ages as we try to teach them how to handle the feelings. Structure of dinner and bedtime is very important to me, so they eat good and then get enough rest to be alert and ready to learn the next day. Day after day we have same rules, yet my mischievous daughter always tests my water, yesterday 15 min before bedtime wanted candy, that’s not happening no candy after dinner, they know the rule clearly yet push the envelope. I’m 50 years old, been there done that. Just No, and then distract them with drawing or a toy they like. It’s not easy being a parent.

The Florida bill would require social media companies to close any accounts it believes to be used by minors and to cancel accounts at the request of a minor or parents. Any information pertaining to the account must be deleted.
Opponents argued that the bill would violate the First Amendment and take away benefits some children get from social media. And they said parents should make the decisions on which sites their children can visit.

I'm glad that Sunny is not my parent. Her children are over 15, and they shouldn't need to be monitored by parents; it sounds crazy. I understand the importance of tracking kids' actions, but at some point, parents should trust their kids too. The only time adult children should be monitored is when they have really messed up or have done bad things several times. Am I wrong here?

Well social media will market to your kid. And it will and already is the wild weat of energy drinks and e-cigarettes and whatever else influencers feel free to peddle. So if you're fine with that, then by all means open the floodgates but limiting kids exposure to this crap is not a bad thing, if you ask me. Their brains aren't fully developed and they learn little socially from any of the interaction they have across social media platforms. If anything it makes zombies of our children and us for that matter. Some regulation is a good thing. In Denmark it is illegal to advertise those energy drinks to kids bit they still get pushed it all on tiktok and IG. The damage is quickly done. If nobody cares nobody cares. And I think busy parents don't have time to check what is being sold to their kids. And parents need to know and care and be involved and guide their kids through it, if they are going to have access to it.

If you are a responsible parent you should be talking to your kids about the dangers and have an open dialog to develop a trust with them.
Just straight out banning never works, as kids will always find a way around it if they need to.

It's rather funny. But, Whoopi sounds like a conservative with her argument that "it is not the government's responsibility to implement this". Sara's right. Where is the party of Reagan that believed in less government? This bill is about more government. Put it on the ballot and let people vote.

I think the best idea is to give kids a mobile phone that is not a smart phone, a flip phone that is not connected to the Internet or online. It can only be used for important phone calls. When they're 18 they can have a smart phone; otherwise no. That would automatically cut down on social media activity.

Years ago people were scared of video games and TV, now it is social media. Sure, some boundaries are necessary, but leave the teenagers alone for a little bit. They will access anything they want anyway with their other friends or by themselves and by monitoring every step of their life you will just make them sick of you as a parent. Once again, some control is fine and good, but not all this

Joy asked "when can you be friends with your child" and i think the correct answer is : it depends on the child. Whoopi says her daughter "emerged" (which was a brilliant way of saying it lol) at 26. That sounds about right because even in your early 20s your teenage hormones may have yet to balance out. Some people dont "emerge" until their mid 30s. And some kids "emerge" earlier. It really depends on the level of responsibility and emotional maturity your child has. But no matter how mature a child may seem, even the brightest kids are still kids. Intelligence is not always a substitute for experience and there are simply some things you learn by life experience that emotional maturity and intelligence cannot make up for. So i think that you can have a great relationship with your child without sacrificing the respect for authority that your child should have for you.
