How many space can you leave in between powered rail and have it still work?

It depends on if the land is level, uphill, or down hill. On level land one out of every 38 rails is considered to be the best to keep the carts moving at a relatively consistent speed. You could definitely keep them closer, and you can stretch them beyond that somewhat. About 1 in 3 tracks need to be powered to go up hill. A down hill stretch does not need powered rails technically, unless you want to come back up the same track on the way back. So if you had a track that looped and you only used in one direction, or if you had one track going one way and a parallel track for the return trip, you might not need powered tracks on some downhill stretches.

Besides powered rail, what other usage are gold good for? I just began playing minecraft and I'm as noob as they come. lol.

Rails are probably the most useful thing you can make with gold, you can make armor, tools and weapons out of gold, but they are not as good as ones made out of iron and gold is rarer than iron in Minecraft. You can make a clock in Minecraft and gold is required to make a clock. You can make a golden apple with gold, which has a few special uses as well as restoring hunger points (pumpkin pie and baked potatoes are two of the best foods to restore hunger points). Finally, you can make a weighted pressure plate out of gold which can be useful for making traps.
