  • In this video we'll watch what many metalheads consider to be the best instrumental ever. I'm talking about Metallica's "Orion." The track can be found on the album "Master Of Puppets", released in 1986. It's called Orion because of the spacey bass lines that Cliff Burton wrote. Along the way I'll be pointing out some of the music theory used in the song....things like the scales, chords, and keys. So grab your axe and let's do this muhahaha

From studio recordings, one could argue that RTL, MOP, and AJFA were the iconic set of albums that will stand the test of time.
On the other hand, one could argue that the first 5 albums were pure genius. After all, Anesthesia was on KEA, and the Black Album is STILL selling in and out of the weekly Billboard 200 to this day.
As a complete album, MOP is the best. AJFA is close, if it wasn't for Eye of the Beholder being a bit redundant and a weak spot of the album. But the guitar tone of the album is one of the most doomy-cutting tones out there.
If we talk about live performances, 1988-1993 is where Metallica really was firing on all cylinders.
Man I'm feeling old now lol.

It is literally my favorite instrumental for a number of reasons. They made the key of b minor in standard tuning very heavy. The clean interlude is very melodic. The lead guitars in that interlude are very melodic. Then the solos hit. James hetfield let all of his shredding potential on his solo. Kirk's solo isn't as good as james', but it is still good. Then later in the song, lars does a sort of drum solo for the first time. When I first listened to this song, the drum solo blew my mind because it is the first time lars had done this in the studio. I wish he would play more of those semi drum solos.

Cliff was so important for the band not only because of his bass skills but also because he was the one who took their songwriting to another level as you can see when you compare the songs from kill em all (written by James, Lars and Mustaine) to Ride the Lighting (mostly co-written by Cliff). He wrote the outro to Creeping Death and Fade to Black, the insane intros to Damage Inc. and Fight Fire with Fire and Call of Ktulu's insane Bass fills...truly a great mentor and very diverse musician

The reason is because it's got it all: rising intro from the depths of the underworld, metal chop rhythm awesomeness, dreamy interlude, killer solos, bass solo, key changes (as you've noted), and a fading out killer metal riff that beats them all.

For many years up to today I have been putting this song in my ears just before all important moments in my life to focus: university exams, job interviews, even dates. It never disappointed.
What a pure piece of music.

I’d have hated to have been Jaymez and to have lost a force of nature like Cliff; he’s someone ANYONE would look up to. One of the most ‘musically mature’ individuals in music history: what I mean by that is his phrases are the very sounds that birthed the entire universe.

The uplifting melody definitely always struck me as something from some classical period I'm not knowledgeable enough to exactly identify, just feel. Maybe evenly vaguely Baroque sounding.

I can't choose one "greatest ever" or "all time favorite" piece of music, art or literature; best I can do is Top 5. "Orion" made that list first time I heard it, 34 yrs ago. It's there to stay.

Nice catch on how Robert's playing being a lot like Sheehan. I started on bass guitar as a kid because I wanted to be just like Billy Sheehan. I moved to guitar for a few reasons but mainly because Im not a big guy and the bass looks silly on me while playing. Muahaha! \m/

Not really a big fan of metallica but Orion is definitely one of my all time instrumentals. Cant help but bob to it also super fun to play and decently easy to setup drum backing 😉
(Feel like 6:40 riff is the hardest Kirk has had to think)

My favourite of instrumental music :
Current : L entité (First Fragment)
The Best Ever : Orion (Metallica)

Greatest piece of music I have ever heard. Simply perfect. All other Metallica’s instrumentals are perfect as well, but this one is just unbeatable.

Well, this is quite a forgotten song for me. I like to put songs that are really good in a special place in my mind. I only listen to them if I'm sad, or very very very very rarely to bring back memories. So I'm glad they've picked this song, it's good to be honest. Yet, in my opinion, there's no best instrumental metal song. They all tell a different or slightly different story or emotions.
Orion makes me think about the old NES games for some reason. Like, the really good ones. Reminds me of when I was 6 and enjoyed them sooo much. So yeah, quite a special song.
It is also a sad song? Liiiike not terribly sad but... just good.

For me, it's the only metallica track that I never ever skip. But for most people I think it's not THE greatest metallica song, but one of them. Also the call of ktulu might compete for the best instrumental in metal imo

Shred, you are absolutely love this! The constellation Orion, the mighty Hunter as it's called is referred to an emblematic archetype of in a Syrian being that once lived named a nimrod... And Christianity in some cases in some spheres people would leave the notion that he was a prototype of the Antichrist that was and is to come!
    ...... Let me hear baby....
