    Omg thank you for that. In the history of my life I've never seen ppl do this. And none of the trees were ever harmed but for some reason ppl are doing this now. Not sure why. I know those bugs harm trees but never have I seen any young trees harmed in any way.

      Female cicadas cut slits in slender twigs at the ends of tree branches and stems of some woody shrubs to create a place to lay their eggs. While they do no serious harm to any healthy mature tree, very young trees that were planted within the last couple of years, or have a trunk diameter of 2 inches or less, and older trees that are unhealthy or stressed, are at risk. More details are on our website: mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/tree-plant-care/plant-care-resources/2024-cicada-emergence.

    What damage do cicadas even actually do to trees? As far as I know they only feed on tree root nutrients as nymphs but adults don't do a lot of eating. It would make sense if the sheer weight of the amount of cicadas on a small tree did damage but besides that?

    Thank you for this. I’ve been driving around seeing this but didn’t want to assume I knew why and also trying not to just google everything when I don’t know something… It is kinda creepy it read my mind tho……. 🤔

    I've seen a few people do this in our neighborhood, and was wondering what it was all about.

    What about vegetables like tomato and pepper plants?

    • @MortonArboretum
      @MortonArboretum  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Vegetable gardens are safe. Cicadas do not have the mouthparts required to chew leaves or stems.

      Netting must stay on the tree for about six weeks. For more information, visit mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/tree-plant-care/plant-care-resources/2024-cicada-emergence.

    What about shrubs? We have several established flowering shrubs that have smaller branches.

      You don't have to do anything. Adult cicadas only sing, mate, lay eggs, and die. I've been through several swarms, they're just loud and crunchy under car wheels.

    Cicadas don't harm trees and shrubs. Waste of time.

    Harming the new growths yourself instead of letting the cicadas do it? Nice
