- Recently, a professional dog trainer told me her favorite Shaped by Dog episode is 16, where I explain the simple concept of “antecedent arrangements” as one of the most effective, animal behavior science solutions to ANY dog training problem. Although it’s an all-time favorite of my students and dog training professionals, it’s a hidden gem to the general public. So, I’m revisiting the topic of how to increase brilliant dog behavior - while decreasing undesired ones - with one easy focus shift. As my mentor, Bob Bailey, says, “When dog training is right, it’s easy.” Enjoy this game changer!

Susan, bless you for all of this amazing content!! I couldn't see training my baby any other way
We don't use the "no" word in our house and with following and implementing your training... It's going amazingly!! I'm so proud of Kaipo and what we've accomplished together
I am starting at the beginning and watching every signal one of your podcasts because I'm obsessed. So helpful and inspiring. Thank you so much and don't stop spreading this beautiful message of love and bonding with these amazing creatures ✨💖✨
Thank you! It's a good thing to be obsessed with, we love to learn your pup's training is going well ❤️❤️❤️
Fabulous episode - as always! I'm also vegan, but FYI my dog is REALLY into vegan pizza! :D Countersurfing has never happened as he is just not allowed to go in the kitchen and he respects that (cat food is on the floor there, so that would be a problem!). However, my cats used to do countersurfing! And man, they are different from dogs! It was an interesting experience. I bought an air spray and whenever they jumped up I sprayed and they were absolutely terrified and left the scene. This turned out to be a great solution for DAYTIME, but then they realized that at night sprays are not coming. Then I bought an automatic spray designed for cats and put it ot the counter. It worked! It was quite scary thought to sneak into the kitchen in the middle of the night to have a hot chocolate...and then I forgot that the spray was there! Now I don't need the spray anymore, however, I don't leave a veggie pizza on the counter at night because that would be quite a big temptation - yes, for my cats as well!
'The Thing Before The Thing' is starting to make more sense to me the longer I'm keeping my journal. One of the 'things' for my pup has turned out to be anything with wheat in leads to poor choices.
I connect with this well…in military drill and ceremony, this would be referred to as the “prepatory command” (thing before the thing) and “command of execution” (cue)
The thing before the thing was one of my favorite podcasts before and now this one is too! I work as a trainer at petsmart and we just had an education put on by Kathy Sdao about arranging antecedents, I'm glad for my opportunity to find my calling at petsmart and it kick starting my love of teaching however I'm even more thankful for people like you who help me continue to learn past what they started!
Hey Susan nice t shirt 🇦🇺
The things we reward when we don’t realise 😮
Thanks for this second take on “the thing before the thing”, very helpful. Could you do a video on “when will my puppy…” for life stage events? For example, when will my puppy be able to sleep through the night without needing to pee? When will my puppy go through its fear stage (stages)? When is it safe for my puppy to start doing agility jumps? When will my puppy start and stop teething? While I realize some events are breed/size specific, it would be nice to have some rough parameters so we know what training to emphasize when. Thanks!
Gotta watch this one again, so full of amazing content! 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
As a BCBA glad this is being explained in simplistic terms ❤
Thank you, Sarah! ❤️
Omg, so proud to see Charlie had 1second airtime on video. 😂😂 we love listening to aunty Susan
❤️❤️❤️
Love your Podcast, and look forward to your insight and perspectives each week. Right after watching the last couple of episodes, a commercial for Pet Corrector comes on. It's horrid and I don't know if it's just an algorithm thing, but if I didn't know better, it comes across as if you're recommending it! Concerning.
Thanks for letting us know! Do you happen to remember the name of their website or URL? Thank you!
@@DogsThat nope. But, I will be more deliberate about noting it if there's a next time & let you know.
@@DogsThat thanks for replying.
Totally need to work on antecedents. I’d love an example of a more sophisticated its yer choice that would help learn to not jump on the counter. I’m having a hard time figuring out what that could look like.
Hi Paula! We'd love for you to join in the ItsYerChoice Summit for more layers of the game: dogsthat.com/y/iycsummit
Dear Susan, I've watched most of your videos on training methodology and I could not find any information on the "keep going" signal. Do you have one? When do you use it? How do you use it? When do you think it is useful and when is it not useful? I have searched the Internet and found some material but they are not really practical. For example if I want to build duration, should I use the KGS or not, because the dog might get used to it and be dependent on it? Would you rather shape it without? If it is a very complex task (like a canine freestyle routine of several minutes without any reinforcement) would you use a KGS? And also I was wondering what a "click" for your really means in dog training. For example when you train a dog duration of sit pretty you never use clicker? Because my problem is that the click sound means you've done well, task is finished. So the dog will probably move out of position. I would love an episode about the nuances of different cues. Thank you!
Hi @indythedancinghovawart4883 we just replied on the other video 😊 Here's a blog post covering types of markers where keep going is covered - susangarrettdogagility.com/2018/09/three-verbal-markers-in-dog-training/
And we have a short video that explains about the clicker - th-cam.com/video/LcHuvAKXIxk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hAT_7SC4lqXIjr6z
Thank you so much@@DogsThat I'll check it out!
I’m the only one who trains the dog in my house, so the dog doesn’t air sent or try to eat food in my hands, but everyone says “it’s because I’m vegan.”😂
My dogs love carrots 🥕 and Bella will eat anything. 😆
Can I ask how you personally handle grief after losing one of your babies , as we have and I was wondering about your pearls of wisdom .🫶❤️🐾
