    She has one of the most realistic reactions to all the crazy scary uncertain stuff she experiences. Wide eyes,the breathing...the level of curiousity...the slow movements..it isn't overdone like almost all movies we see. She was perfect😲😌🤓

    The growth chart at 1:54 is the whole key. Charlie passes Sam in height at 16 and a half, but then is no longer recorded by the time Sam is 17. The father literally carries the weight of Charlie's passing, whether it was his fault or not.

      Their is quite a difference in height of charle at 16 and then at 16.5. It possible that at 17 his height is out of the frame. Sam also grows quiet fast between 16 and 17.

  • @thisbelindaangel2841
    @thisbelindaangel2841 5 ปีที่แล้ว +207

    The figure in the woods looks, and sounds, like a hanging body. I think that Charlie changed himself there, that's why his height isn't recorded as old as Sam. The body draped over the father's shoulder is the body of his son, really the guilt of his suicide. The chairs devolving is a metaphor for the father's growing dementia.
    Beautifully done.

    "Things move, turn up in weird places.. It's like someone else is living here" it's like he's forgetting everything, it's losing himself, he's not eating well and he's waking up in the middle of the night to check on things. Hoping keep memories of his daughter around the house, eg. the bunny after so many years. Regrets of the past and wishing she still like it there and feeling safe when she's around, like the good old days. No matter where he moves, IT will follow him.. It is already a part of him. 😭 Good job guys!

    This gripped me from start to finish. I think the drawing is of something she saw when she was a child then remembering it as she grew older. The shadow in her bedroom was her fear creeping back until she put the light on (like a child prefers light on to keep monsters away). The creature hanging off her father at the end is a demon representing his burden of something from the past, she also saw it because she feels the same way as him maybe? something ties in with her and her father considering she can see it.....and he carries it....

    I can't help but notice an individual/entity approaching Sam from the woods whenever she goes into trance. I think it's a younger version of that thing attached from her father's back, in which most would agree represents the illness inflicting him, which will eventually & inevitably attach itself to Sam as well. The distance between Sam & the entity in the trance represents the timeline by which it'll caught up with her.

      I just came to this short after watching Relic - the full length debut by the writer / director of this film that used this short as inspiration. Relic was fantastic but some of the music / sound design was too heavy handed and didn’t allow the fear to ratchet up over time (my guess is post production influence by the American producers as it was produced by the Russo Brother’s production company). I really love the clarity and restraint exhibited in the short. But despite my minor critique, definitely watch Relic

    I'm a new fan. Being a short story writer myself, I am amazed by the originality of thought. I think the fact he talks about things gone missing or being moved. Doors unlocking after he is "sure" he locked them, etc. shows his decent into dementia. Her growing fear of losing the part of him that is still aware of reality and losing him completely is depicted by the tree tunnel. I think the figure in the distance is "the End" and it scared her more and more as it draws nearer. Very deep film. Creepy in the best sense of the word!

    So nice to see a ghost story where the spirit isn't bent on evil revenge yet this still retains enough uncertainty to keep us fixated on all the little things going on for us to draw the conclusion of this rather sad tale . Awesome work in all aspects concerning her dad's son & her brother . Why he haunts them as he does leaves us wondering why the son killed himself & left so much guilt on the dad. Great story like the days of old when we didn't need face ripping gore to make a point. Nice job to all that worked on this ,we appreciate it 100%.

      The father is carrying the burden of his worsening dementia as well as past transgressions? The tunnel of trees which the daughter remembers from childhood represents her fears of something sinister (in the past?) The placement of that meat hook next to the first chair was eye-catching. The location, the place itself must be important - the short is named after it.

    • @kebenanndavid3724
      @kebenanndavid3724 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Having read the other two comments , I agree with both . Placement of meat hook , most won't catch . Dementia plus past wrongs is definitely what Dad's carrying . Daughter's childhood traumas and possible inherited mental issues are rearing up in her head .
      This short touched home for me . Superior camera work , the actors should receive awards , the story itself outstanding . So all involved :
      TAKE A BOW 👏👏👏👏👏
      Alter , you are the BEST for this genre .

      I see the thing attached to the father as a demon living off of the father. I think the daughter always knew it was there which was why she always left in a hurry as a child but forgot as an adult.
      The demon exists on fear and negative emotions so tries to create them without killing the host.
      Not so much fun as the other ideas but if dad feels better with his daughter there then I think it will turn up the heat on her to get rid again.

    Dementia is scary...when I was younger my grandfather had it, he stayed with was when this was developing till he moved into a nursing home.. At our home, he would stand in front of our window from the inside looking out to the front yard and the street..he could have stood there for hours probably or he would pace back n forth to the window..he would look confused, baffled..later after his death my mom told me that when he looked out the window, at times he would see hooded figures come out of the ground in procession with one of them always holding a list of names. He told my mom his name was on there... As a kid, not knowing that was still scary..Our house was a little creepy to begin with. Before dementia my grandfather was kind, a jokester, and eternally cool.. So, even though this is Demetria making him see things, for him to see something so ominous and somewhat damning, blew my mind..creeped me out to say the least..

    The reveal of the distorted chairs in the woodshop was very understated but very effective. It reminds me of the similarly distorted "gynecological tools" in the David Cronenberg movie "Dead Ringers."

      I think the chairs were a physical representation of the father's dementia. The first chair was beautiful, but as the disease progresses, his ability to think clearly diminishes.

      Dad is losing his memory probably suffering from Dementia or maybe Alzheimer's thus portrayed by the "creature" on his shoulder weighing him down. A "creature" from which he cannot escape.

      A drug addict is said to have a "monkey on his back." That was no monkey! That was something out of a Hieronymus Bosch painting! Whatever it was, it made eye contact with the old man's daughter and coolly acknowledged her. There was mutual acknowledgement. It was either a literal demon or just the "demon" of dementia.

  • @characters.inc_1233
    @characters.inc_1233 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok this is a lot to take in. Obviously dementia in the father, the creature on his back was the weight of his son’s death( he said “goodnight son” at the end) but I thought it would be a cool concept if the creature was a muse, a creature that inspires artists so intensely that they lose their sanity. The father is a woodworker and the daughter is most likely an artist(why else involve the sketchbook?). The daughter sees the creature and forgets where she put the bunny. Early signs of dementia which was hereditary, or the muse took an interest in her. Just my thoughts.
