Ken, Thank God AMF came along. Many do not give them the credit deserved. I bought a new 79 sportster and to this day I could kick myself for selling it seven years later. Merry Christmas And Happy New Year To ALL Of You!

Don't kick yourself for selling the bike.ihad 5 AMFs even a Cafe racer. I liked the AMFs better. Born in 67 evel knievel rode a AMF and who was cooler. Don't kick yourself there's another 79 out there with your name on it.. a better one I promise you that. I don't even own a bicycle now. But I still technically own a harley..an AMF to...a 49 cc AMF golf cart. The gasoline engine is a harley Davidson.

Had a 1978 XLCR, you could lean these much further over in turns than other Sportys and really feel the "gyro" effect of the V Twin getting it back upright

I have two, a 77 and a 78 (actually just sold the 78) and my 77 had 2500 original miles, but had sat for 22 years. I tore down to the crank and back out, first over pistons, Andrews cams, electronic ignition. Ru$$el Stainless drilled rotors, braided stainless brake lines, Progressive suspension front and rear. I did a custom black (very expensive ) Paint job, and blacked out fork lowers, turn signals, eliminated the wrinkle black on the engine and used a satin black. Blacked out kickstand, turn signals and handlebars. It is beyond stunning. My local H-D Dealership appraised it at 28K. It won BEST OF SHOW first time out.

I saw these new at my local Colo. Springs dealership back in '78. The '77's didn't sell, and were still on the floor. Marked down to $2,875.00 from $3,500.00, I still couldn't afford one. I've owned a '77 XLCR for the last 10 years, I put a hotter Andrews cam in it. Still all original otherwise, even have a N.O.S. set of Goodyear Eagle A/T's to go with it when I sell someday. But, like Ken I really like the bike. I just think they were ahead of their time.

A motorcycle magazine from back when these were new 'no not Easy rider or In the Wind etc. " I think it was Cycle magazine, that wrote in the road test that Willie G. Davidson pulled the best performing 1000cc Sportster engines off the line for the XLCR's. The XLCR was designed by him as the Harley he wanted to own. The XR 1000 the motor company produced in the early to mid eighties with the actual high performance engine, the one with the duel carbs, hot cams and other XR go fast goodies didn't sell well either so go figure. The Harley faithful stayed away in droves. Who could have imagined they would turn out to be expensive collector's items today!

It's a little like what happened with the Honda CBX 1000 6 CYLINDER, I had just started in the business in sales when the CBX was released. We were a Honda, Yamaha, Triumph and Husky dealer. We thought we were going to sell the heck out of the CBX. We sold a couple at first then the motorcycle magazines wrote their not that great road tests and that pretty much did it. Honda should have known better than some of the things they did on the CBX. A 35mm front fork on a bike as big and heavy as it was how stupid. And there were other things that were just not completely thought out. The 1980 was an improved machine in many ways but slower than the 79! Back then 1/4 mile times and horsepower is what sold the big bikes. In it's worst year the CBX was a far better machine in pretty much every way. If the cafe racer would have had a competitive engine, brakes and handling it could have been a world beater!

I think if HD put a cafe racer together with the 2020 Roadster and the cosmetics from the xlcr it would be as cool as the Sturgis, I love everything on the xlcr except those pipes, put a xr Supertrapp exhaust on it and the coolest machine ever

Man, someday I will have one. In the meantime, have you seen the new Revolution Max Sportster model that had the blueprints leaked? It looks like they are going to make a new version of the XLCR with what appears to be the 115hp 975cc motor (which makes sense since the original was a 1000cc). It has dual disc brakes, the same fairing, a 2-1 exhaust, the same tail section, a similar tank and seat, dual shocks, triangle side panels, similar wheels, rear sets and so on. It's no 1979 XLCR but if they do put this bike into production it will be a hit! Take a look at the bike in the article, there is also a flat track model based on the Sportster S (this bike was leaked before the Sportster S was put into production) and it's bad ass with dual disc brakes, mid controls, taller suspension, and basically everything the Sportster S should have had, but it's also a 975cc model. There are going to be all kinds of new Sportster models coming out, and hopefully they design a few of them around older models (there is a Harley Davidson 48X trademarked too, which means we will be getting a Revolution Max Sportster 48 in the future). The 975cc Sportster Nightster is being released this month at the January launch event. Apparently there is going to be a Road King ST too! That being said, I really hope they release the new XLCR soon as well! There are pictures and full blue prints from all angles of the new XLCR and the flat tracker in the article below
