    I feel like sm is doing the same to EXO like they did F(x). After the debut of Red Velvet, they stopped promoting F(x), and now that NCT have debuted, they’ve given up on EXO. They don’t know how to equally promote which other than being obviously unfair, is such a stupid mistake for their business since these groups have enormous fanbases which = revenue and profit. I just don’t understand what their logic is

    • @elizabethlililee9755
      @elizabethlililee9755 5 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      So we all agree sm doesn’t know how to manage. How the fuck are they still “successful”. Honestly they just cop all the talented idols and that’s why we kept supporting their groups even if they themselves are TRASH.

    • @KurlyRushie
      @KurlyRushie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      Well now that SuperM has formed, they probably stop promoting all other respective groups that each member belongs to. With the exception of Taemin as most of Shinee are serving the military, SM really messed up with the NCT. I can see where they're going with the sub units and member rotation but SM should have established a proper promotional activity for this group so that the audience doesn't get confused with which members belong to which and when they reach a certain age they move to that unit...it can get pretty confusing.

      Oli thats something almost any company would do. If something happens that’s going to cost your business a lot of money, you’re obviously going to do what you can to reverse it. Even if it’s not the most ethical decision, it’s what you do as a business. American companies would do this too, and we’ve seen examples of this in the NBA and Blizzard.
      Obviously the Chinese government is one of the most despicable organizations on the planet and Hong Kong and Taiwan should be free, but as a business trying to make money you can’t say that. We don’t know how he feels about the issue behind the scenes, so we shouldn’t judge him for making the smart decision as CEO of JYP Entertainment.
      This isn’t to say that JYP is completely innocent or that he’s not treating his idols unfairly, but for this specific issue I don’t think he’s completely in the wrong.

    In case with Jessica, you really have to know the culture to understand why this happened.
    I was an exchange student in Korea, my teacher told me a story: a woman was working in a company but had to leave for maternity leave. She talked with her boss and got permission, everything seemed ok. The day she comes back from maternity leave she finds her table empty, her stuff packed in boxes and put by the door.
    Such situations are very common in Korea. They tell you it's ok, but then imply by action that you should leave
    I personally think it's disgusting
    In Jessica case: SM was not ok with her business from the beginning, but didn't tell her. She just suddenly discovers she's out of group. She's also American, maybe she didn't know Koreans act like this

    They also refused most solos, dramas, and variety shows not directly connected to promotions and didn't promote those that were accepted. They were silent whenever members got a role in anything (even when Sunny, SM's niece, got a Broadway show) and even pulled Tiffany from her friend Jessi's show with no reason.
    They didn't even give f(x) a random name. Fans had to make their own and were so pissed when Red Velvet got one soon after debut. And how they treated them was rude and neglectful. When Sully was getting bullied, they didn't even help out or say something.
    Then Jonghyun's suicide sent shockwaves and people in the company filed out swiftly after, leading the large wave of companies being suddenly exposed by idols tired of turmoil. The company, in that right, is the rise and maybe fall of K-pop as we know it.

    For Super Junior as well, there's a clip from a show where Leeteuk went to talk to a counsellor about his feelings about being in the group (on camera, naturally) and he spoke about the immense pressure he'd been put under. Heechul as well, despite being still part of SM, often subtly shades them - even when he's not trying to, it still exposes bad things, like when he had a metal spike put in his leg after his accident and he brought it onto a talk show because it had bent because he 'danced on it too hard'... yeah, that's called 'not sufficient rest time', and it means that even now he's missing out on Super Junior's activities because it never got to heal properly, and he's in constant pain. I'm pretty worried about Haechan from NCT for the same reason - he got a stress fracture or something and spent 3 weeks at home, but when he was next doing activities fan videos show him limping and in pain after their performances.
    If you'd like a good breakdown of the diet culture, AMFG Videos always have a good detailed look into individual artists (including Taeyeon), and if you'd like a clip of SM artists talking about stuff, the TV show Idol Drama Operation Team had a bunch of members from different girl groups (including Seulgi from Red Velvet) meet up to write a TV drama together, and the first thing they talked about was how hard the life of a trainee was, and how the fridges had cameras on them to control how much they ate, and how hard it was to be prevented from calling their parents, etc.
    Also, Amber's new song released after her contract finally ended (Hands Behind My Back) is very clearly about the industry and its control. She's released other music before that exposes it in the lyrics, too. Worth a look for an update to this video.

    I would also like to add that in the beginning, amber was mistreated by the managers because of her boyish looks, she "left" the group for a short period, until the group had a new manager, and then continued on with group activities. The company's administration (managers, coordinators, vice-president, president, etc.) seem to be very old fashioned and closed-minded, which is why a lot of their foreign artists suffer from mistreatment, racism and it can reach to even sexual harassment. SM didn't just get music shows to ban JYJ, they were also blacklisted from all the broadcasting stations. There were many years where JYJ couldn't even appear on TV (interviews, variety shows, etc), which has only kind of stopped recently.
    Also, after TVXQ's successful Korean debut, they were blindsided by the company and shipped off to Japan to try and break into the market there. They had a really difficult time in Japan at the beginning because SM didn't want to introduce them as a kpop group. So they had to start from zero. It seems to me that SM didn't provide enough (if any) support to them in Japan in the beginning because they talked about how hard it was for them, and how helpless and alone they felt in a foreign country.
    I also saw some people mention that SM keeps taking down TVXQ's older MVs where they were 5 members and reuploading them to keep the view count down. I don't know how true that is, but it does seem like the kind of petty bullshit SM would be into.

      @@inhaleit I wonder about how foreign fans declare that they have a voice/power to create change in kpop companies when the key reasons they do what they do is due to lax regulations on labour laws in Korea and that industry culture exclusive in Korea. On another note, when you think about small companies shutting down due to backlash on treating kpop trainees and idol like shit and yet those big companies still remained despite having the same scandals, is kinda messed up when you think about the money needed to run such companies. It seriously looks like small companies going out because they don't have enough resources to shield themselves from such public backlash instead of forcing companies to give their trainees better welfare, and those who do remains and gains more portion/power over Korea's entertainment industry. pengu it was like akb48 but I believe sm was inspired by Morning Museum because they java had a rotation concept way before Akb48 and super junior.

    • @bunnywar
      @bunnywar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      kinda the same for nct, I believe the plan was to have a base stage and teams that perform at that base stage while others promote new music

    • @ciarapayne
      @ciarapayne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it was Morning Musume they were looking at since they've been rotating since 1998 and just added their 15th gen of members. After School were inspired by them too since MM call their member departure stages 'graduation concerts'

    I still remember Onew from SHINee saying how they constantly kept travelling from practice to fansign to concert and to promote their new album during tour that they had no time to sleep, they would only take short naps in the car while going to those places and it would go on for days

      @@jenifersg People started hyping JYP after the Buning Sun scandal, but JYP is just as bad as the other companies. Forcing Wonder Girls on the west market and ruining their career as a girl group in Korea. Hyuna leaving the company because of alleged sexual harassment (her song babe says it all). With them debuting MissA and only promoting Suzy so the other members were treated unfairly and the group disbanded. Jay Park was forced to leave 2PM after he said to a friend (in his trainee days) that he hates Korea. Sunmi left the company and said she wouldn't want to work for JYP again because he is very strict. Somi left the company after many years of training and 2 survival shows because he wouldn't debut her. Chungha and Chaeyoung (iz*one) left JYP before going on the produce series as well. Hani left JYP because they wouldn't debut her either.

    you made it sound like after JYJ won their second case everything was great, when in reality they're still shadow banned to this day by SM and were never able to appear or promote on tv. junsu appeared on tv for the first time last year after ten years, but is still unable to get any appearances or promote his songs on music programs or shows. he released a new mini-album last november "Pit-a-Pat" and couldn't perform it anywhere. you might've heard about the KBS fiasco where they claimed junsu wasn't able to perform on music bank because...he didn't facetime them. literally.
    they said "It would be difficult for [KBS] to explain our reasons for not casting one singer over another." and then later added "Artists who want to appear on a music show request ‘face time’ interviews in advance and we discuss their potential appearance together. I don’t know about other variety shows, but as the head of ‘Music Bank,’ I have never once received a ‘face time’ request from the artist in question."
    even after ten years the JYJ members are still suffering because of SM, so yeah they can suck a dick and please check out their music
