- This is easily my favourite mission in EBA just because of the story. I think it's a really sad but also sweet mission, so I uploaded a video of it.
Sorry about the huge flashing "REPLAY" text on the side, but I recorded it on NO$GBA (a nintendo DS emulator) and there's no way I would have been able to play the actual mission using a mouse instead of the DS' touchscreen. :P
This was played on my Nintendo DS using an R4DS card. I then transferred the files to my computer and ran them in an emulator to watch the replay. Sorry about the poor sound quality, there was more or less nothing I could do about it.
Recording was done with Camtasia Studio and editing with Adobe Premiere.

The real reason the agents have sunglasses is so you can't see their tears in this stage. ;_;
Also why Commander Khan doesn't turn around to shout "Agents are go".

The fact that Elite Beat Agents managed to take a cheesy love song and make it so heartbreaking is an achievement in itself
I used to think this song was relaxing. After playing EBA back when I was 12, I struggle to hold back my tears every time I hear this. 25 now and I still can’t hold back my emotions every time I hear this.🥲
There is no quicker way to feel like a terrible person than to fail any part of this mission.
Honestly, I think the whole point of the story actually works better if you get the "bad" ending. The toy he comes back with is weird and ugly, but that's not the important part.
Even in the cutscenes... things don't go as planned, but they're still doing the best they can to honor the dad's memory.

This doesn't need any campy, over the top cheering and dance.
The song is solemn but inspiring. The cadence makes us feel like we are experiencing Laura's sorrow and joyous disbelief. Even the agents and Khan know that this is no time to be flashy and dramatic; it is a time to mourn and comfort.
And that alone is inspiration enough to move forward.
BONUS ROUND: Highest difficulty sends the commander, making it even better.
How can anyone believe in god when bad things happen to good people :(

after 11 years, i suddenly remembered this game, so i cleaned up my old nds lite yesterday. got to this stage, and now at 22, i'm still crying, man.

When I first played it, I thought it would be easy being a slow steady pace song. Then my vision started getting blurry making it harder to correctly hit the right marks. Apparently, the game released some chemical agent into my eyes. Well played, Nintendo. Well. Played.

Cried so loudly while watching this, as my own father passed away a few years ago.
Also, I've realized that Lucy has probably one of the most humble wishes in the game. As most are about people wanting fame and glory, but no, this is just a little girl who wishes to see her father one last time.
And yet the humblest is perhaps the hardest one of all. Damn. 😭
I get you, man. Ouendan has a few sad ones (can't recall how many games there are). There is the one of the sisters, where one passes away and the other blames herself for her death.
The other is a man who died but left things with his beloved on bad terms, so he begs to go to Earth one last time to tell her that he loves her.
Deeply moved, the head angel grants him 3 hours.

Best part is, this one is being done pro bono, there was NO "HHEEEEAAALP!!!" in this intro. Kahn just watched what was happening and dispatched the Agents without a second thought
I have a theory for this stage.
The father was actually an Elite Beat Agent who was killed in the line of duty.
Kahn instead of doing his usual 'Agents are GO!' just stares at the monitor silently.
He could just be being respectful for the girl and not treating her suffering as 'another mission'. Which is also why the agents aren't dancing.
I don't know Who are you, but this is canon for me...

That's a pretty neat theory. Ties into one I always had: That from the events of this mission and the final mission, Lucy grows up to become an Agent/Diva herself, so moved and grateful for the agents being there when her family and the world needed them that she would eventually pick up the torch (and the microphone) when one of them passed it on.
Maybe with your theory, she also did it to honor and carry on her dad's work, having seen for herself what it was like to have someone who lives to inspire others to do the impossible.

What I love most about this mission is there isn't some silly campy setup. The commander doesn't even issue an official order. The agents don't need to be told. They already know.
This was the hardest stage in the game, even beyond Jumpin' Jack Flash, because this stage hit me like a freight train, and it's kind of difficult to see the screen through the endless tears and rush of emotions of losing my own mother.
I'd like to believe the canon that Lucy, knowing the power of music, becomes an Elite Beat Diva, and rises to the rank of Commander.
Japan's Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 1 and 2 both had similar missions. "Over The Distance" and "Believe". It's all hilarious fun and games till you hit those levels, I swear. Ugh.
I honestly think it only worked because the game had been so campy up until then. I so expecting something silly to happen that when it didn't I went "wait a minute, this isn't funny... this isn't funny at all." If the game tried this tone from the start I'd have rolled my eyes, I think.

Imagine this for a moment.
The Commander of the EBA, years from now. He's old. Tired. Confused. He can't keep up with the phone calls anymore. Cut to a scene of him training new agents in dance moves and he trips over his own two feet. Another shot of him getting tangled up in phone cords. Yet another of him under a pile of paperwork. His hair disheveled, his uniform untucked and a mess. He goes to scream for HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP.
But no shout escapes his lips. A hand is set on his shoulder. A girl's hand. And through the power of song, dance, and music, she helps him get through one last mission. Whips the troops into shape. Sends them on missions to save the Earth. And at the end of it all, he smiles and takes off his giant Star, and pins it on her chest, walking out the door with a smile on his face and a giant thumbs-up in the air.
For me, it's headcanon, but I'd like to believe Lucy at the ABSOLUTE LEAST becomes a Diva.

This game had some of the biggest feels moments. This mission, the mission were the dog has to go home, the girl who wanted to be a dancer, etc. And let's not forget the mission failed cutscenes. I really hope there will be a Elite Beat Agents 2, or possibly in smash. This game is too good and underrated to be forgotten.

Just played this for the first time yesterday and... wow, that was powerful to me. I too lost my father when I was young, so this mission made a deep connection from me from that alone. I lost my mom a couple years ago too. The ending of the mission too also hit home with me and I cried so hard. I didn't know that was going to happen.
I went into this game expecting a lot of silliness and I most certainly got that! But out of any of the missions, this one is by far the one that spoke to me the most. And I will never fail this mission.
After playing this mission. I was in tears yes but I will forever respect the agents. Because they brought back this little girl's father and did the impossible. That's badass
I first played EBA in 2008 when I was ten. Well my great aunt had be in the hospital for quite some time. She was getting worse and I was quite close to her. Heck I don't even know what illness she had because I was young and didn't understand. Well she didn't get better and I was told by my parents that she died two days after our last visit at the hospital. I cried so much those following days.
I thought that playing my DS would help and 'A Christmas Gift' was the next level in EBA so I played and it made me even more sad for obvious reasons. To this day, that level is the only level in any game I refuse to play.
... too bad you couldn't face the aliens. Lucy really stepped up to the plate then.
I finally realized why Lucy is the first person to yell to encourage agents to break themselves when they're petrified... bcos She has the PUREST heart than any other agents' clients :'(
I've never seen the failure scenes from this particular stage, and I hope I never will.
the first 2 are actually quite funny, the 3rd one is depressing though... so yeah don't lose during that part -_-'

The bad ending is if you fail the song.
It's 2022 and i still remember playing this while holding my tears, I must give Lucy's a good ending she deserves. It's good to see this once again before christmas. The only rhythm game that made me cry after playing because of the storyline, i didn't know a short story would made me cry overnight. It's such a good game I will forever miss playing EBA.
It's this kind of thing that separates good games from GREAT games.

I like it how for this stage they took the situation more seriously and that cartoony and still made our hearts feel sad
Yes. This stage is beautiful, and empathetic, and serious...
...and REAL. A young girl shouldn't be expected to fully understand death, and somehow, with the power of believing, spirit and music, everything works out for the Stevens family. Lucy gets her wish, Laura gets closure and the drive to move forward, and Matthew keeps his promise, even from beyond this mortal coil.
The game is so epic and fun with all the awesome songs. Then this one comes and punches you so hard in the feels. Especially the part at the end when the father's ghost comes back to see his family again and even brings the bear he promised to get her.

I remember I was so addicted to this game when I first got it. I was just a little kid, at 8 years old. It was like 2 in the morning when I played this mission. After I finished it, teardrop after teardrop was hitting my nintendo. God, I was never touched by ANY type of movie/story until then. Amazing.
No movie in the world could make me cry, but a 5 minute storyline for a video game mission did it.
This is why I could never forget about EBR. It was just, epic.

How can a story feel both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time
I remember playing this game for the first time and being so thrown off by this stage because the tone was SO different from the rest of the game. Couldn't help but shed a tear... and it was only punctuated by the agents standing in silence at the end instead of doing their usual victory cheer/dance.
This is the song where if I got a "NO" I would just retry it because it was too sad.

Only thing lacking in this video is Commander Kahn's YEAAAAAAAAHHH at the end of the song. It really made the moment for me when I played.
I mean no other word can be used to describe what the Agents managed to do there, so I guess Kahn rolled with it.

Es un juego musical en el que hay que seguir las indicaciones según el orden en el que aparecen en pantalla al ritmo de la canción que suena (que en este caso es "You're the inspiration" interpretada por Chicago) Si lo haces bien como es el caso te sale el final del nivel bueno. Si lo haces mal llegarás a un final de nivel alternativo.
Se supone que hay una organización que ayuda a la gente cuando está está desesperada pidiendo ayuda y ellos con el poder de la música los ayudan a superar sus dificultades
En este caso, la niña pierde a su padre en un accidente y ella insiste que él llegará en Navidad. Es Junio y la madre le grita, sólo para luego admitir que le cuesta bastante admitirlo.
Sin la necesidad de pedir ayuda, los EBA la encuentran. No se da la orden esta vez, los agentes entran en acción.
I still remember playing this level for the first time. After several levels of ridiculous scenarios and silly set ups, this one hits you like a friggen semi.
I just thought “oh I can see where this is going. The dads gonna have a tough time finding the perfect gift for her daughter. Shenanigans at malls and super markets to get the gift…WHAT?”
When the song started, I had to pause and emotionally prepare myself to not fuck up. I couldn’t fuck up. I needed to help her.

After all the joy I had playing Highway Star (I LOVE that song), my bro recommended me this story (he's got a DS so I borrowed it by a little while) and... man, I got really emotional when I played it. This is too beautiful. :')

I was heading home for college and stopped for a day at my best friend's house, and he gave me this bootleg DS cartridge with like 70 games on it including this one. I remember scrolling thru the list in the morning while everyone was asleep and playing this game. And yes, there were tears when I hit this. It just came out of nowhere! Anyways so this is a Christmas song to me now.
