If you go to profesional drawing classes or sculpting classes students get a real model in the middle and they draw or sculpt based on real life . Gives you a better sense of the volumes and it's great for training . After that you can go and use pictures as well . Keep in mind pictures are deceiving since the focal length is affecting a lot how a person looks and it can give you a very distorted impression of your reference .
if you go to transform tab there is a split screen slider . On one side you will have your active subtool and on the other side you will have the rest of the subtools . good luck !
