I use the whip for the same reason
Our local river is full of Jack pike so getting the fish out quickly helps keep them away
Fishing the rod and line just takes too long to get the silvers out

You should take your Lure rod with you Danny and give it a go after you have been catching silver's for an hour.
Mr Pike seems to always turn up when you fish the Ribble.
