  • This is episode is inspired by the humble Japanese art form, etegami. Join me as I explore what these little postcards mean, and create one along with me.
Art is for Everyone! These sweet little projects are meant for absolute beginners to watercolour. So many of us have the desire to paint and be creative, but don’t have the time to spend learning in a more traditional way. These projects will get you painting with beautiful results. Perfection does not enter the experience :) So, relax, enjoy the process and the beautiful materials, and have fun!
I hope you enjoy this episode. Be sure to tag me on Instagram @kateriewing, or send to me on Facebook at Kateri Ewing - Watercolours. I love seeing how you use the lessons to create your own art!
    Materials used:
    • Wildthorne hand-crafted watercolours. www.wildthorne.com The Wildthorne paints are my favourites for these small and intuitive projects, but any watercolours in similar colours will work just fine!
If you are interested in Wildthorne paints, there is a special set just for this series: wildthorne.com/products/art-i....
    • Chinese watercolour brush. Any smallish pointed round watercolour brush will work wonderfully.
    • Strathmore Watercolor Postcards or etegami postcards from www.jetpens.com. You can also cut any watercolour paper to postcard size.
    • Gold gel pen
A word about chops: Chops are a very personal thing. You can find out more about them at www.blueheronarts.com or at www.oas.com. I purchased mine while on a trip, in a little Tibetan store. Soapstone is very soft and easy to carve, so I carved my own using my personal monogram. If you would like a video on creating your own monogram, leave me a note in the comments. :)
Any questions? Please ask. I’m here to help! And please subscribe to my channel for updates on all the latest videos. Thanks so much for watching! :)
Check out my classes on Craftsy.com! They are all meant for beginners :)

Lovely. I heard you were supposed to paint an object in front of you, and typically with sumi ink. But I like that you do it your own way.

    Kateri,
Just as I watched this the sun was setting and two rosied clouds
floated across the tree tops and remained as tho they were puffs of
springtime...your video is so lovely and what a wonderful idea...to send someone
joy...it gives us all not just permission to create etagami but a gentle push
to just paint...listen to your heart and send joy to someone who needs it...
Thank you so much...you who gently push us into the world to make art....

Very Beautiful...yes, I would be interested in making a chop...I have thought about making cards to send with messages to people. I save those cards that fall out of magazines and have a pile. Of course, will have to prep the surface first. I am also in the beginnings of decluttering, simplifying, taking steps to minimalize my life And have been searching the meaning of wabi-sabi, in life and in my art. Love this form of art!

Thank you for something different. I love most things Japanese and feel inspired to try this. Imagine
receiving a hand painted picture from someone I would keep it forever. Also I would be interested in learning how to make your own chop.

Akashiya make stationery and art supplies and do those nice gansai selections, like Kuretake too. The little sets are often used for etagami. Thanks for posting this video, which is lovely, and gives a nice explanation of it. So hard to find out more. though I have seen examples online so your info is welcome. I had no idea you could get special paper. Hahnemuhle also do nice postcards in a pretty tin which can be reused. They have rounded corners. I would love to make a chop, so shall be looking in again. I need the ethos of etagami!

Cheryl Clough I’m trying with the haiku. I think just let it happen and don’t judge it. The more write, the easier it will become 💗

thank you Kateri............so peaceful and relaxing.............it so spontaneous and there is a true beauty in that for me...............I've spent years trying to master Sumi-e painting and traditional watercolors, and often have felt overwhelmed..........when that happens, I tend to want to paint less as it is frustrating and not enjoyable...........I think that the best practice in learning is perhaps to allow some time for peaceful spontaneous work like this, and also devote at least some time to learning things that can be intimidating, like perspective, sighting (which so far I don't feel gives me good results, but I will keep practicing), loading of the brush with different colors to give tonality, etc.............it is all really beautiful and does have a place in the journey of learning.............but to spend at least some time, with no expectations, no do-overs, etc. can be freeing and quite lovely....................truly inspirational : )

    • @kateriewing
      @kateriewing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes! This practice is for all people, including no professional artists and those who have absolutely no desire to be a professional artist. For me, my professional work is so refined and painstakingly created that I need practices like this to feel creative and free and joyful. It allows me to inhabit a different place as a creator, a maker. And it allows me to share my joy with others- the real essence of this practice.

Inspirational video, thank you! I would love to see a video on how to make and personalize a chop. Is the dandelion stamp considered a signature as much as the chop? What’s the difference -if any- in using both stamps?
