Warasa's Ronald Raymond McDonald demonstrates how to play the Garifuna rhythm Punta on the Segunda drum, and then performs a short song with his father Mario and a friend.
For those interested in Garifuna drumming, please see our other videos on Garifuna drumming techniques or visit our Garifuna drumming school in Punta Gorda, Belize.
Punta is the most popular and well-known Garifuna rhythm, and was adapted into the more modern music punta rock, which is the most popular music in Belize and is also popular in Honduras and parts of Guatemala.
Punta is much faster than Paranda, and Punta dancers try to outdo each other with fancy footwork and fast hip and ass-shaking "sexy style".

I played djembe drums just to get close to my roots. I am Honduran and love the Garifuna beats i feel is the heart beat of my beloved and much missed country HONDURAS!
Yo toco los tambores porque me acercan a mis raices. Soy de Honduras y me encantan los sonidos Garifuna. Tiene el corazon de Honduras en su musica. Les amo mucho bellos!
The drums have deer skin. They are singing in Garifuna people who originate from St Vincent and settled the Caribbean coasts of Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala. Punta is a Garifuna rhythm popular in all the countries where Garifuna people live. Drummers play the punta rhythm slightly in the different countries but it is all punta. The drums are heavy and have one edge resting on the ground. These ones are one inch thick mahogany.

Horgullo 100% catracho saludos a toda mi gente garifuna desde la paz
I loved this!
Of course - but only once the Segunda has been learned to a certain level - you cannot play Primero until you have perfected the Segunda beat, as when you play the Primero you must stay in timing with the Segunda. Obviously Primero is much more challenging, as the counter rhythms are very fast, and ongoing improvisation is at the heart of primero playing
May God bless my fellow Hispanic Garifuna brothers. Thet are from Central America and they are a mixture of the Native Americans that lived in that area and of west African tribes. A Hispanic is just a ethnicity, not a race. The Garifuna are part of the Centro American society. Thus making them hispanic or Latinos.
This is so beautiful. . Id love to see more of u.. would be nice to see u in person.. punta rhythm one of my favorite.
