  • Mickey Mouse is easily the most iconic character of all time, but all that popularity leads to tons of scrutiny. Can his recent projects back up his legacy, and does he even need to when he's already at the top?

      Universal didn't own Oswald until 1984 also Walter Lantz did use him and also transformed the character into a realistic rabbit and be on of the many friends of Woody Woodpecker (My older cousin has been obsessed with Woody Woodpecker and he has many comics and he also owns many merchandise of Oswald like a plush toy and a squeaky toy and a Woody Woodpecker album which has Oswald in it voiced by Mel Blanc and he gets his own song (Hop! When you asked if KH helped Mickey Mouse's reputation in any way, one thing that I believe you forgot to mention (but I don't blame you seeing how you said you haven't played the games) is that KH fans tend to REALLY hate Mickey Mouse. While it's not exactly how it goes in the story, there's this misinterpretation of an event in one of the later games that implies that Mickey left Aqua, a pretty beloved character by the fans, trapped in the Realm of Darkness, getting her corrupted in the process. The reality is a bit more complicated than that (obviously, this is KH) and this interpretation mostly comes from the fact that Aqua, debuting in a prequel, isn't retroactively mentioned in the older games, but needless to say, you will find a lot of KH fans who really hate King Mickey.
    Combine that with the meme of hating Mickey because he's a representation of the company, even more so here where he is literally a king.

    • @StripeTheSquid
      @StripeTheSquid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Didn't know of that, but it makes sense. Sucks that he gets misinterpreted that way, but yeah, KH is a confusing series so even if it's wrong, it being misinterpreted isn't shocking

      @@StripeTheSquid I guess "Mickey's House of Mouse Works" (which is what I call the two shows under the same idea) is like a modern take on "Walt Disney Comics and Stories", just in animated form. I say that, because there are a lot of tropes associated with the comic series, like different IPs crossing over each other, characters that are more familiar in the comics than they are in animation, and introducing character aspects of specific characters that weren't touched upon in animation, especially with Mickey himself. Personally, I'd prefer the "House of Mouse Works" Mickey over the "Wonderful World" Mickey, because there's a balance in how Mickey's personality is handled as a straightman character.

    It's frustrating that Mickey gets no respect, but at least he's still used. Can't say the same for some other mascots. In particular, the characters from Will Vinton Studios [at least The Noid still shows up in Domino's Pizza media, and the California Raisins are used in Japan, albeit only the costumes in live action ads]. Honestly, the entire story of Will Vinton Studios is very sad and frustrating. I can never watch a Laika movie or buy a NIKE product after knowing what they did to Will Vinton himself. I highly recommend the Claydream documentary that goes into a lot of details. It's bittersweet, but it's a story that more people need to know.

  • @muppetsretrofan8873
    @muppetsretrofan8873 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I actually love Mickey and Minnie and I feel like they don't get enough respect. I wonder how different things could've been had Disney not cancelled The Search For Mickey Mouse movie. As for the Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers movie, I DESPITE what they did to Peter Pan for the reasons everyone has mentioned. But hear me out, I actually think the movie could've worked at least a little bit better had the villain been Julius The Cat from the Alice Comedies. He's actually a lot more sadistic then Mickey and Oswald and straight up has VILLAIN behavior. Two biggest examples are the shorts "Alice Gets Stung" and "Alice's Orphan". As for House Of Mouse, I had a pitch for an episode where Taran [The Black Cauldron] and Peter Pan pull [light-hearted] pranks on everyone and taunt the villains.

    • @StripeTheSquid
      @StripeTheSquid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly, I don't think Search for Mickey would help a lot. It would've done well nostalgia wise, but it would be right before the internet blew up, when "Mickey is an evil corporate entity" became mainstream. Timeline wise, it would've aired around the same time as Three Musketeers, which only got attention recently. Plot wise, it's very similar to Once Upon a Studio, which while critically praised, came out during Disney's worst financial year and was ignored for the most part.
      Julius would be fun, but it's clear they wanted a hero turned villain. Personally, I'm partial to Pinnochio. He wants to be a real boy, but real boys have to grow up. It's basically Pan but removing the uncomfortableness of Pan's unfortunate backstory paralleling real life

      Occasional things pop up. House of Mouse, 3 Musketeers, Clubhouse, but it's more so the idea of them. People like HoM for the crossovers, but not the show itself. 3 Musketeers is a bit better, people like the dynamic the main 3 have and Pete being at his most villainous, but is at best a cult classic. Clubhouse is just "huh I watched that as a kid" and memeing on Mortimer Mouse that's it it's a fleeting thought.
      A lot of the genuine fanbases for Disney properties are things like Marvel and Star Wars, which are mostly disconnected from the company, and the animated shows, which Disney tends to ignore and most fans of tend to resent the company. Mickey himself doesn't have an active fanbase, nor do the actual movies outside of the REALLY big ones like Frozen and Lion king. With Mickey as the face, that apathy or resentment is directed to him.

    Quick little disclaimer about me: I LOVE Mickey Mouse so much. Something about this little rodent makes me smile. I collect some things about him but there’s so much Mickey stuff in the world, I mainly collect Oswald the Lucky Rabbit stuff. My grandma made me a Mickey Mouse pillow case and I carry the pillow with me every trip I go on. I always go to school with a Mickey Mouse shirt on to. Mickey as a character to me is so fascinating because of his history and to me he is such a fun loveable character if you actually watch his shows and movies and not just Mickey Mouse clubhouse.
    I love making alternate universes and one is actually how Mickey is coping in life being the mascot of a large basically corrupted company. I wish others would see Mickey and not just a mascot and as a character like I do. I also adore Oswald he is also my idol. Anything Oswald I see at the parks or at shop Disney I will buy it!
    Mickey and Oswald are literally my idols, friends, and comfort characters.

      I found out who Oswald was when I was younger. It was my birthday back in 2015 and my family took me across America (since we are closer to DisneyWorld) to DisneyLand. I had no idea who Oswald was but when we were in California adventure and Oswald was meeting up in the front, my mom had asked if I wanted to meet him. When I did, the first hug with him just kind of changed my life and I don’t know how. Now and days I rarely see Oswald merch unless it’s for a high price on EBay. I jump up and down whenever I see him on something (like on the kids menu in 1923 on the Disney Wish cruise. I was embarrassed to ask for a kids menu just because it had Oswald on it lol. I got to keep the menu though!) Ever since then I had a hobby of researching not just Oswald, but Disney and its history. Hopefully with Epic Mickey rebrushed there will be more of him. Like a Funko Pop in target or something lol
      I wish people wouldn’t just look at Mickey as a soulless mascot. He has so much character into him besides a perfect, happy all the time flawless character.
      My dream is to someday make a cartoon series or movie of my own that will inspire people and have great comfort characters just like Mickey and Oswald are to me! I wish I could make a Mickey movie myself especially it being official but the odds of that are most likely not gonna happen lol. I’ve always told my friends I wanted to be a director/producer for a movie and every movie I watch or see a review on TH-cam, I take notes about what makes the audience love the movie and what does the audience dislike about it. I also point out my own opinions on it and strong notes that the movie has. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to where I want to be for now it’s a great hobby and just seeing these characters mentioned or on screen is something that makes me smile every time!

    Best Mickey would probably be from the comics, like those by Floyd Gottfredson and Paul Murry. But of course those are from like, the 1930s to 1950s, not from the 90s and beyond...

      @@StripeTheSquid Honestly, I thought even the later comics were still alright in that they at least put Mickey in interesting situations. He's a respectable character when he's allowed to be one at all, even if he might not be Disney's *best* character.

    An interesting take on the retrospective of Mickey. Though if I had one critique, I kinda wish your narration was a bit more clear. I had some difficulties understanding exactly what you were saying. The Pete counter alert also drowned it out a number of times.
    For me, Mickey Mouse was always an iconic character, that’s coming from an ironic sentiment. He was reportedly among the first fictional characters I recognized in my youth - to the point where whenever I saw anything remotely similar in shape or formation of his iconic silhouette (including a trio of jet fighters flying overhead), I would immediately identify it as “Mickey Mouse”.
    It’s interesting that you only covered the media appearances of the ‘90s onwards since I would argue that Mickey’s search for relevance started much earlier. WWII was probably the first time the character found himself getting shoved out of the limelight. This was deliberate since Walt apparently didn’t want the character to be associated with the war effort and all the other edgy screwball cartoon characters that populated the cinemas at the time, but it kinda ended up hurting his media presence as a result, leaving Donald and Goofy to become more prominent stars. It wouldn’t be until the ‘50s when Disneyland (both the theme-park and the TV series) and “The Mickey Mouse Club” made the character somewhat relevant again - though even that was short lived once the ‘60s-‘70s rolled around.
    I know your take on the "Rescue Rangers" film wasn’t too favorable, but honestly, I thought it was a riot. It’s easily the most experimental film Disney has released in this decade par none, and it was really apparent that the people helming the film were animation buffs themselves. And while it would be naive to say it rivals “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, I would argue that it’s the closest film we’ve gotten to matching its wit and cleverness so far (“Looney Tunes Back in Action” was alright but incredibly flawed). And while Sweet Pete’s resemblance to the real Bobby Driscoll was unfortunate, it apparently wasn’t intended since originally, they had another character in mind for the role, but they went with Peter Pan since Disney already had the rights.
    It’s a pity that Disney had to extend the copyrights of Mickey for that long. Had they let the character expire back in 2004, we probably would’ve seen more creative usage of the character compared to today.

      Yeah speaking is hard for me, hence the joke about people not understanding me like Donald in the Quack Pack segment, but someone else in this comment section has suggested some tips to improve. It's just hard because that's just kinda who I am, hard to change your voice.
      Oh obviously he's been relevant for longer, but I wanted to look at modern reboots only, like I did for Hanna Barbara last year. See how the renovated Mickey as a character and series. If I included EVERYTHING, well, this video would be even more ungodly long.
      As I said, I still highly recommend it. It's awful, but it's hilarious, and I love how experimental is, even if it's really really bad. I am aware Sweet Pete was a coincidence (it was originally Charlie Brown, but they couldn't get the license, and then Pluto, but Disney was too protective) and it makes sense as a concept (the boy who can't grow up had to grow up), but it's a well known story and Disney is a huge company, you'd think one person would question it

      @@StripeTheSquid It would be interesting to have a follow-up or a brief rundown of some of the more notable attempts at reviving Mickey due to his new public domain status. Yeah, a lot of it is lazy, slap-dashed horror games and movies, but there have been at least a few unique attempts at adapting the character. Probably the strangest and most funniest example is how Mickey is now a real character in Erik Larsen’s “Savage Dragon” by Image Comics.

    hi. I'm one of those rare breeds of unironic Mickey fans, and yeah i'm SICK of corporate jokes. I can't even talk about my comfort character without mfs going "ermm isn't he the evil greedyman who buys everything and ruined Star Wars??". I mean i made at least 3 AI Mickey covers and ALL of those videos have a corporate joke (it's at it's worse in the most popular one, Die In A Fire where half of the comments are corporate jokes)
    tangent aside i'm really hoping Epic Mickey Rebrushed does well and ACTUALLY reignites some love into old Mick (and Oswald, but pretty sure everyone ̶in̶c̶l̶u̶d̶i̶n̶g ̶m̶e, ̶h̶e'̶s ̶m̶y ̶f̶a̶v̶o̶u̶r̶i̶t̶e ̶d̶i̶s̶n̶e̶y ̶c̶h̶a̶r̶a̶c̶t̶e̶r ̶f̶o̶r ̶g̶o̶d̶s ̶s̶a̶k̶e loves him)

      My question is why doesn't this happen to any other mascot? Mario, Spongebob, Bugs, Sonic, it's the same joke of "cute iconic character but a greedy corporate overlord" but it's ONLY Mickey. It's been going on for decades, and it just simply isn't funny anymore. Every adult cartoon, every political cartoon, every comedy youtuber and every Disney animated parody makes the same joke. It's white noise at best now.
      The original Epic Mickey is peak nostalgia era right now. If Disney pushes this game hard, they could reignite Mickey's love. Oswald in particular I'd love to see more of, he's ridiculously underused despite being a fairly popular character
