Legend has it’s on a quiet night you can still hear his voice echoing on the parade ground

He might have been in the Army for thirty six years but he never managed to see any operational service. Quite an achievement seeing as he joined during WW1 and also went through WW2.

He was at the Mons OCS Aldershot when my father attended and he used to regale us with tales of Brittain’s treatment of recruits and the things he would say to them. My father had great respect for Brittain.

The recruits are only quaking when he stomps his foot down and the ground moves.

Sergeants today have become quite chilled down compared to the ones back in the days. But doesn't mean they're soft. Just a change of approach in order to build up trust between them and their unit.
But it takes a bad and wicked sergeant, so wicked that his troops "hate him", in order to build a well disciplined unit. The sergeant needs to be "bad to the core" so that he is respected and nobody takes advantage of him. I think the RSM here is that examples.

How did he ever pass basic fitness? Just look at the gut on him.

he was probably fitter back then.
since he became sergeant major there was no point in him being fit as his role didn't involve much physical activity

I’m quite sure he could do the business if he was required to. A proper soldier.

The long service and good conduct medal. Doesn’t mean that you were good, all it means is that you never got caught doing anything that you shouldn’t. As Sargent major once said to me, “ you only get charged if you get caught “. And that’s how I learned to keep my head down 😂😂😂😂

    Wake up! You idle man!!
Awesome. My first RSM was exactly like that. Never swore. He was also a lot slimmer. But fairness to WO1 RSM Brittain, he is passed his sell by date. Better than being Families Officer.
