I just realized something about this track. Everybody is all like "Yes, this is the starset I know!". Yes, of course this song features Dustin's amazing screaming, but think about how deep everything they do is: The song is based on "de-evolution", the fact that if a species becomes complacent they don't evolve forwards and in fact end up going backwards instead. Now consider the fact that this song is the most like the stuff from Vessels, as of now TWO albums ago. They've done a lot of evolving their sound and especially Dustin's vocals throughout and tried different techniques in Divisions as well as in Horizons. This song was a literal de-evolution. They went back to a previous style for it. That's so sick.

To be honest, Dustins screams are freaking sick. Division only had a few, but very nice ones, but this album...its objectively great, and the songs wouldnt work well with much screaming, but I hope we will get to hear more from that on the next record.
I’ve heard some people hate the bridge of this song, and I completely understand, I mean it is VERY lengthy and doesn’t really seem to add anything to the song when you first listen to it; but even then, feel that this song would be nothing without the bridge. The very first time I listened to this song (and I wasn’t that big of a fan of it at first), I actually really appreciated the bridge, as it helped make sense of what the song was actually about. Afterwards, the more and more I listened to this song, the more appreciation I had for the bridge in a musical sense, as it helped immerse me in the song so much as to make the breakdown slap even more than it already did (and boy do I love that breakdown). All I’m saying is that this song is a perfect example of how you shouldn’t judge a song or any part of it so harshly the first time you listen to it. But hey, that’s coming from someone who listens to Orchestral Dubstep artists like Xtrullor or Talurre, so getting used to long bridges is a personal specialty of mine. So yeah, I hope that gives anyone who hates the bridge a different way to look at this song, because Starset’s soul objective isn’t to make a catchy, generic, overly simplistic song with mundane lyrics and instrumentals; no, it’s to tell the story of an entire universe that they created and to let us connect the dots left loose. That’s what the bridge of this song is for.
@@MrPatrickbuit I honestly do stand by what I said about the bridge, but I still respect your opinion on the. @@elkboy2538 The main issue with Starset that started to annoy me more as I got older is how much they repeat everything. When your album is full of songs that have 3 identical choruses and very little variation within the verses, the music gets stale quick. The bridge kind of encapsulates this problem in itself. It’s too long, instrumentally nothing happens and it’s 30 seconds of a text to speech bot telling us about de-evolution, which might be semi-interesting on a first time listen, but it really isn’t on repeated listens. Not to mention that I can’t believe they’re still using that exact same voice in 2021/2022 when all it is associated with are reddit stories.
@@ImaGenius40 The My Demons bridge is not perfect, but at least there’s no annoying text to speech voice talking to us in the middle of a song and there’s something happening instrumentally.
This song feels like the thematic opposite of "Trials," a song I interpret to be about victory and success being born only of an embrace of self-determination and personal agency. This song seems to be about surrendering that self-determination to some governing entity in exchange for comfort, a course leading to complacency and tyranny ("sheep becoming wolves, and you eat from the paw...the wolves take out their claws, you still eat straight from the paw"). The speech in the middle indicating that only species that embrace a system of the strong surviving and the weak dying off manage to avoid de-evolution seems to corroborate all this in a metaphorical sense. Human society can only avoid de-evolution when only those who work and strive and fight for success-the "strong"- achieve it, while the lazy and unmotivated-the "weak"-do not, not when everyone can gain success simply by surrendering the struggle and eating from the paw. If everything is provided freely without struggle, there is no motivation to embrace the trials of which "Trials" speaks, and the paw providing food can easily grow claws and turn corrupt on a whim. It's also worth pointing out that the name of the song is no accident. They could have easily called it "De-evolution" or something, but they intentionally chose "devolution," defined as the decentralization and distribution of power from a single entity at the top down to lower sub-entities. The implication seems to be that the only way to prevent de-evolution by a corrupt governing entity given all the power by a lazy, complacent people is to decentralize it, with every individual person retaking control of their own personal agency. Between these songs and the various dystopian "government all up in your business" music videos Starset has made over the years, methinks Dustin might have an issue with unchecked big government.
I completely agree. It’s honestly been on my brain a lot since the song came out and your explanation puts my thoughts into perfect words. Unchecked, tyrannical government from either side. We need to find a balance or we are dooming ourselves, I believe this is what he is getting at, and this goes perfectly with their own storyline too.
Trials is about the singers of de-evolution (if you add just 1 word to one of the lyrics), de-evolution is a warning to the sheep the trials goers sing to or against.
Keep coming back to this song and using it to explain to others what's going on in the world right now. People need to understand, this song is VERY direct. It's title references the Devolution of power but the actual lyrics are about de-evolution of species. It's intentional and it's where we are headed.
This is one song I always come back to as well. It seems like every band since 2020 has spoken out against the current situation with government overreach and control and the people or “sheep” continuing to “eat straight from the paw” blindly following along without questioning anything for themselves. But on a much larger scale, we are devolving as an entire species because we are growing incapable of having civil discussion and understanding that it is okay to have different opinions and beliefs. Instead we’d rather cancel and eliminate all people who disagree with the mainstream point of view and this is further dividing people to a point of no return. Dustin is warning that if we don’t reverse this course it will be too late because everyone is too stuck in their own narrow minded views to see a bigger picture and unite, and it will be our downfall. There are so many “fake revolutions” on all sides and it’s all for no purpose other than a social and political pony show. Starset has been warning about all this since they started making music, you can see it all too clear through their videos. It’s truly scary where this world is going…
I looked at it and if you think about the logo of this song, one of the lines separates the eye from the brain, wich could mean something about current situation also, i was thinking that it could mean that people dont use critical thinking and just believe to what they see/read somewhere without making any research
@@dominic4661 I don't think it's about de-evolution specifically... I think it's about faux pas revolutions that cause the de-evolution of society, which I think is a better take
This is so fire even 1 year after i first listened to it. Also its insane how much of humanity this describes and how everyone will think that it doesn't describe them lmao.
Both great singers. Lookup tillian Pearson from Dance Gavin Dance, specifically in Inspire the Liars and Man of the Year. His range and screams has been described as very close to chesters, he also has some solo work that’s on the pop/dance/soft rock spectrum
@@djmaydraws3862 So Jon Mess does all the screams as I'm sure you know but, It's a shame that Tilian doesn't even attempt to fry after Mothership because it could be a really good dynamic with Mess
God DAMN I love this song. The synth build up with the explosion of guitars and drums, the screams later on, the overarching theme...Bringing It Down and Telekinetic, step aside! While I love just about every Starset song, this one is my new favorite.
"Sheep becoming wolves, and you eat from the paw" Most clever line in my option. Wolves are generally seen as antagonistic figures, and they hunt sheep in stories. It's told in 2nd person, telling us that our own society is becoming wolves. And "Eat from the paw", Sheep don't have paws, wether we've become these wolves or not, we're letting them manipulate us.... Extremely clever, it speak's the song's message perfectly
Saw them on the 14th in Atlanta. This was the most fun song they did. Dustin was making the crowd sing some parts and it was absolutely awesome. Loved every second of their show. Red, Fame on Fire, and Smash into Pieces were also there and they were all amazing.
This is one of the songs on the album where you can hear the parallels between the "Starset Society", and the current state of events. Referencing witch hunts, trying to erase the truth, fake revolutions, etc. You can hear the same messages even clearer in Tunnel Vision
When you make a song entirely calling out a group of brainlets who think they are "Wolves" and that they are actually creating a revolution only to be wolves on leashes being held by the same people causing all of their problems. This song is literally sublime, new starset favorite.
I picked this up too, and I freaking dig this song for that reason. “Fake revolution” is the line that stands out for me. Hmm… I wonder which kind of people are doing revolutionary-like actions over an issue that was never that severe to begin with…
These songs are great. they sound amazing. what draws me in a lot more are the Lyrics. The Lyrics are so powerful and meaningful that you can't really miss what the songs are really saying
For me, this song either has to tie with Monster or be the best Starset song (and really best song in general) I’ve ever heard. I just can't stop coming back to this song, it's so freaking good. The atmosphere, the storytelling, the instrumentals, Dustin’s voice and screams, the lyrics... They just absolutely nailed it with this song! Devolution is always getting stuck in my head and I can’t remember the last time I went an entire day without listening to it, I must have listened to this song like fifty times and I still almost nod my headphones off every single time. Starset really outdid themselves this time, and I hope this along with all of their other songs get the love that they truly deserve. Thank you for once again proving yourselves the greatest band of all time (at least in my opinion).
There's alot of us your not alone they don't show the people who trying to spread awareness most are lost we are not life gets harder for us when all you see is the lies and the games our nations play
Hope so. Icarus just feels like it could work as a single like how Trials did. I would love to see a song with a breakdown get a music video let alone be a single (not really counting Bringing It Down 2.0)
3:33 Starts to talk about belzebuth, if it's on purpose that's one of the greatest timing I've ever seen in my entire life, bravo STARSET, you guys are AMAZING
This song is absolutely FIRE The screams compared to the other songs are just amazing I seriously couldnt tell whether i was listening to Starset or something else
Some of starset songs sound like it has a taste of traditional Eastern music because of the use of black keys, which is familiar sound to me (I'm Japanese) and feel like a mix of Eastern and Western nicely.
I'm so glad the lyrics acknowledged that "devolution" is not pronounced "de-evolution". The phonetics Nazi in me was really annoyed when this was dropped last week. Superb track!
From 3:33 is just a whole other level of satisfaction to my ears. The bridges in this album are out of this world. Absolutely loving this. Finally a whole album of masterpieces again since transmissions (no offense, I just wasn't a fan of the other new pieces before this album).
I feel like this album is a bit of a warning about tech like the Metaverse and Neuralink, corporate greed making these glamorous things inevitably terrible, and devolving as a species as a result. Definitely not putting any words in any mouths, but that's how my brain interprets some of the meaning from this album. Starset is fantastic at writing lyrics with layers upon layers of meanings.
It's about de-evolution in general. The concept that a species can become complacent and too easily appeased, resulting in a stagnation in evolution, and eventually evolving backwards. There's many factors to it besides a couple corpo endeavors, which are failing real hard and costing said corporations billions of dollars.
Dustin said in one of their shows that it's about when 2 sides of an argument are more focused on yelling at each other over half truths and delusions and shouting the other side into submission than figuring out what's actually true.
This is the telekinetic song of the album and I'm here for it! (Which reminds me, I'm sadden they didn't keep the trend of a song title beginning with 'tele')
What if Tunnelvision was a sort of transition into a new trend, it’s close to “Television” and the new trend could evolve into one song on the next two albums sharing “vision” in the title. Idrk what other words have “vision” in them, but I’m sure there are some! Lol
We all need to repent together. Work together. The play is corrupted and falling to it ground we are evolving rn for what. Destiny, remember that. We will arise together my brothers and sisters.
My comments about the bridge: It works. The song goes from fairly heavy and loud and then flattens out, the bridge plays and you know something good and heavier is about to come. The calm before the storm type of thing. The bridge builds up, Dustin starts singing again getting more intense, and then the scream drops. It's really well crafted in my opinion!
Think this my fav song after Earthrise. A lot of people especially younger gens think it's best to just be in your own bubble and pretend others don't exist and to not try. It's so tiring in my experience.
Those screams are insane, love how they’re only done where it matters the most on this record. Not overdone and it shows a mature progression. Another banger in our books 🤘

Libertarian Dustin be libertarian. I vibe with that.
This comment is a blessing
so does that mean this song is also against r/antiwork
@@frankieg9528 you do realize that this is about their lore, not ours right

Man, this song is deep, but beyond that, just simply epic.
If this song doesn't perfectly describe the global situation I don't know bro. Just so good and relatable.
Literally thought the same thing tbh
I looked at it and if you think about the logo of this song, one of the lines separates the eye from the brain, wich could mean something about current situation also, i was thinking that it could mean that people dont use critical thinking and just believe to what they see/read somewhere without making any research
covid globalist socialist and corporativist dictatorship

Man, I haven't heard screaming like that since Chester, amazing job Dustin!
Both great singers. Lookup tillian Pearson from Dance Gavin Dance, specifically in Inspire the Liars and Man of the Year. His range and screams has been described as very close to chesters, he also has some solo work that’s on the pop/dance/soft rock spectrum

God DAMN I love this song. The synth build up with the explosion of guitars and drums, the screams later on, the overarching theme...Bringing It Down and Telekinetic, step aside! While I love just about every Starset song, this one is my new favorite.
"Sheep becoming wolves, and you eat from the paw"
Most clever line in my option.
Very clever how someone else had the same thinking I did a while ago it’s great to think that we both had the same idea
Saw them on the 14th in Atlanta. This was the most fun song they did. Dustin was making the crowd sing some parts and it was absolutely awesome. Loved every second of their show.
Red, Fame on Fire, and Smash into Pieces were also there and they were all amazing.
I was also there.
This is the best song in the album. I have it on repeat. Well done Startset
Everything about this song is just perfection. No other band makes it like starset
“SHEEP🐑BECOMING WOLVES🐺”

“ITS ANARCHY ITS 🧬DEVOLUTION”
This is one of the songs on the album where you can hear the parallels between the "Starset Society", and the current state of events. Referencing witch hunts, trying to erase the truth, fake revolutions, etc. You can hear the same messages even clearer in Tunnel Vision
I was thinking the same thing as I first heard the song live but more of how it fit sociologically rather than with the Starset Society
Easily the Best song on the album
I love how this song aligns with how I view this world. Humanity is evolving backwards.

Some of starset songs sound like it has a taste of traditional Eastern music because of the use of black keys, which is familiar sound to me (I'm Japanese) and feel like a mix of Eastern and Western nicely.

What the hell was that. Oh My God ! i love it. The breakdown after the bridge is mad. Absolutely love the different variations done here. Love it.
I'm in love with this new Starset album 10/10
I just realized that this song actually describes the reunion movement in arknights almost perfectly. I love this band.
From 3:33 is just a whole other level of satisfaction to my ears. The bridges in this album are out of this world. Absolutely loving this. Finally a whole album of masterpieces again since transmissions (no offense, I just wasn't a fan of the other new pieces before this album).
This and Tunnelvision are just society today... honestly sad, but true.
There many ways to understand this song
Dustin said in one of their shows that it's about when 2 sides of an argument are more focused on yelling at each other over half truths and delusions and shouting the other side into submission than figuring out what's actually true.

Please do more screaming! I'm obsessed. ♡
Lol
I’m so glad I got to hear this in concert!
I can't get enough of this song omg. It's been on repeat all day

Wish you could see the smile on my face. Amazing!!!
Those lyrics are true fire, specially when they can apply so good on our daily society.
TFW he album is barely out and I'm already looking forward to the next one.
We all need to repent together. Work together. The play is corrupted and falling to it ground we are evolving rn for what. Destiny, remember that. We will arise together my brothers and sisters.
My comments about the bridge:
It works. The song goes from fairly heavy and loud and then flattens out, the bridge plays and you know something good and heavier is about to come. The calm before the storm type of thing.
The bridge builds up, Dustin starts singing again getting more intense, and then the scream drops.
It's really well crafted in my opinion!
STARSET: THE BEST BAND EVER! PERIOD!
Think this my fav song after Earthrise. A lot of people especially younger gens think it's best to just be in your own bubble and pretend others don't exist and to not try. It's so tiring in my experience.
Ok that riff is filthy and I love it
