According to the National Park Service, "An assassin stepped out of the crowd. Raising a gun, the man fired one bullet at Theodore. It passed through T.R's overcoat, a fifty-page manuscript, a steel eyeglass case, and lodged in his chest.
Theodore coughed into his hand, and seeing no blood, determined that the bullet had not entered his lung." 'Smithsonian Magazine' confirms this and that the bullet was lodged in a rib.

But there's a radiographic on line depicting the bullet in the rib. There are different versions of the story.
However I am confident your version is the most correct.

The even less powerful .32S&W figured into two assassinations. In 1901, Leon Czolgosz used an Iver Johnson revolver concealed in a bandage to shoot President McKinley, who died nine days later. While the conventional wisdom is that McKinley would have survived with today's medical care, that's not certain, as he had pancreatic necrosis, which can be fatal even today. Not that his medical care was good; doctors performed emergency surgery in the poorly equipped first aid room of the fairgrounds where the shooting took place, and the lead surgeon was a gynecologist who had never treated a bullet wound.
In 1933 Giuseppe Zangara used a U.S. Revolver Company firearm in the same caliber when he tried to assassinate President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt in Miami. Being very short, Zangara had to stand on a wobbly chair to see over the crowd and his shots went wild and missed Roosevelt. Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago was struck and died of an infection a few weeks later, and several bystanders suffered serious injuries. Despite its weakness the .32S&W hit pretty hard.
Amusing trivia: Zangara committed his crime on February 15, Cermak died on March 6, and Zangara went to the Hot Squat on March 20. Thirty years earlier it had taken almost two months to fry Czolgosz.

@@PaulHarrell I agree. It seems to be most accurate. I know there are images of the glasses case and of his speech out there, leading me to believe that's what happened.

After being shot, Theodore Roosevelt was able to determine for himself that he was not lung-shot and, after a cursory inspection by a physician, decided to go ahead with his speech. He stood before his audience, bleeding through his shirt, and informed them that he had, in fact, been shot, that it would take more than a bullet to stop him ("A bullet can't stop the bull moose"), but that he would therefore be keeping his speech brief. He spoke for 90 minutes.

Thanks for the video, Paul. A police officer friend of mine (now passed away) stopped a car full of bank robbers, not knowing that they had just robbed a bank. As he walked up to the driver's side window, the driver shot him point blank with a snub nosed .38 special. The bullet struck his Sam Browne belt buckle knocking the wind out of him and dropping him to the ground. The bullet was stopped by the belt buckle and in the ensuing gun battle, the bad guys ran out of ammo before the officer and they gave up. My friend's injuries was a bruised bladder and bruised intestines, but no other critical injuries. So, what you presented holds true, caliber, distance and what was struck can make a difference.

Personally I prefer something like a Chums Surfshorts wallet anyway - It holds more than these Ridge type wallets, is softer and easier to carry, and has space to carry coins for when we have to use toll roads, parking meters, vending machines and so on... along wth anything similar - I know a lot of EDC types carry paper clips, handcuff keys, SD cards and flash drives, SIM removal tools and all that.

However these tales are only noteworthy because they're the exception to the normal course of events.
Any sensible person will take the necessary precautions:
in a car? Put your seatbelt on.

Anything else is going to be down to luck.

Of course my nose was torn off, ruptured a spleen, and fractured my pelvis in numerous places but it beat being buried in a coffee can. -Fine carbon powder to the resin.
-Kevlar or better material than fiberglass.
-Every three to four layers add a thin 1/8-to-1/16th non-rusting wire mesh. (At least one wire mesh.)
-Small grains (not powder) of granite between at least one non metallic layer.
-Add tightly spaced light-thin ceramic tiles with glue on top to have fragments stay in place, as the beginning.
-Add a layer of rubber to back as force dispersion.
-Sew together a denim or Kevlar pocket for the armor against potential spalling.
Any of these, among others unlisted, additions for better, than the already decent video's, homemade body-armor. Test before acceptance.

John didn't take a potshot as it were, only made a comment about consistency.
I think that Paul's meat target tells more about the effectiveness of bullets than ballistics gel, while the "scientists" point out that ballistics gel is the superior way because of its consistency.
To that, I just say that living things struck by bullets are also not consistent and often struck at varying angles, striking different parts of the body in the process.
Yes, gel has the virtue of being consistent, but that's also its single biggest shortcoming when trying to evaluate real world use.

Personally, having seen you shoot your meat target with a wide variety of different projectiles now, it would seem to be about as useful and accurate standardized target as could be developed outside of a ballistics laboratory for forensic use. It is not as good as ballistic gelatin in terms of repeatability or consistency, but it does provide an excellent "thumbnail" view as to how projectiles would tend to perform under real-world scenarios, and the results it yields seem to be very much in line with what I would expect. This is the sort of thorough and practical material that makes your videos my first recommendation to a new shooter looking for a foundational look at these issues. He showed us the spoon he had in his left breast pocket of his field jacket. the spoon had a large creased dent. Apparently the spoon deflected the round from his chest and mangled his shoulder joint so bad his arm could not be saved. Haven't thought of this in fifty three years.

Makes sense. Low velocity, little to no bullet expansion and solid bullet construction all allow for a bullet to pass through its target with ease.

    Entertaining and informative as always.
The cycle of my reactions when a new Paul video comes out is funny:
    1) There's a new Paul Harrel video!!!
    2) Oh bummer, its not something I really care about.
    3) Well, any new Paul video beats a pointy stick. It'll watch.
    4) Hey, this might actually have a surprise or two. Better than expected.
    5) Oh no...he has the baby pistols out again. I don't care about those.
    6) Oh yeah, the small calibers make the point, and now he has a bigger one to further illustrate.
    7) You know, that was a damn good video.

The point of gel is to provide a consistent medium in which to test a projectile's parameters. It is, and was never, intended to be an analog for tissue damage in a living body. A living body is made of tissues of varying density and structure, intertwined in complex ways. The meat target's only real flaw is that tissue changes after death, so dead meat doesn't react *exactly* like living muscle would, but it's the best analog you can get without buying thousands of dollars' worth of surgical practice models, or shooting live animals.

    Paul,
Thank you for addressing "That Guy", over the subject matter of the "Meat Target".
"That Guy" seems to think that Ballistic Gel mimics REAL mammalian tissue.
"That Guy" also is an obvious Firearms squirrel, with no practical applicable background, who has gone to great lengths to ingratiate himself into the Firearms/LEO/Paramilitary communities(Yes he has a very LIMITED background through serving in the Navy as an Electrician's Mate for a SHORT enlistment.)
"That Guy" doesn't even know that "Ballistic Gel" is just purely a data source to examine...CONFIRM KNOWN projectile performance parameters.
"That Guy" OBVIOUSLY has never witnessed/participated in the trauma care and or the autopsy of someone who has been shot by a Firearm(I have...yes I am a Medic, and I KNOW Ballistic Gel is in no way capable of duplicating the results of REAL mammalian tissue damage as the results of Firearm projectiles...these ARE the INDISPUTABLE FACTS).
Simply put; The "Meat Target" is a PERFECT example of the DAMAGE Firearm projectiles impart to mammalian anatomy!

Tommy, the ballistic gel and ballistic soap targets give you *different information* than the meat target.
Gel shows you the permanent cavity.
Soap shows you the temporary cavity.
Both in a consistent, repeatable manner good for statistical analysis. If you know that bullet X had so big a temp cavity and so big a permanent cavity, and had an average incapacitation time of X in the Fackler goat tests; and know that another bullet had so big a temporary cavity, so big a permanent cavity, and an average incapacitation time of Y in the goat tests (and a lot of other bullet's data); you can *extrapolate the likely performance* of a bullet not in the goat tests based off of the size of temporary and permanent cavities without having to shoot a thousand goats.
The meat target is a better model of what happens to an animal.
Use the right tool for the job!

@@ScottKenny1978 Human bodies are just like the tissue of "Animals", because we are in the family of "Mammalian" animals, okay.
And everything you said about the details about Ballistic Gel is what I said in a nutshell, when I wrote ''"Ballistic Gel" is just purely a data source to examine...CONFIRM KNOWN projectile performance parameters. Thank you for repeating what I said...in detail.
Ballistic Gel is not the "right tool" to examine the effectiveness of a firearm projectiles on any kind of animal tissue, whether it is a Ungulate or a Human. And more importantly, to examining the ability of a animal/Human to function in any meaningful way, after being penetrated by a firearm projectile.
Ballistic Gel is simply the right medium to CAPTURE firearm projectile performance data in a medium that is EASY to examine and retrieve.
In no way shape or form does Ballistic Gel give you any idea of a firearm projectile's effectiveness on living/dead tissue. Cavity this and cavity(Wound Channel/Tract) that is conveniently droned on about by those that have no idea about anatomy...newflash most anatomy is utterly nothing like Ballistic Gel, most anatomy is already filled with "Cavity", even to the point most organs are hollow cavities themselves, called "Hollow Organs". There are VERY few areas of an animal/human body that are remotely the consistency of a BLOCK of Ballistic Gel. Hell lets talk about veins and arteries; veins have valves and arteries are tubes of muscle...a BLOCK of Ballistic Gel, certainly isn't capable of being a representative medium when "Blood Vessels" of animal anatomy are considered. And don't get me started on lung tissue and BONE.
I have been present in more than a few autopsies/trauma centers/field hospitals, of people wounded/killed with firearm projectiles, rarely are any "Wound Cavity" remotely consistent with those produced in a BLOCK of Ballistic Gel.
The only thing that can be "extrapolated" with the use of Ballistic Gel, is to CONFIRM that a firearm projectile's design will perform the result of producing a KNOWN effect...."Wound Cavity"...."Projectile Deformation/expansion/fragmentation"..."Depth of Penetration". Ballistic Gel can not "extrapolate" the information about the effectiveness of a firearm projectile to STOP a target from functioning and to recover...if at all. I've examined many people and hunt collected game with all different profiles of a "Wound Cavity(s)", and quite a few shocked me of their level of continued function and survival.
Talk about "incapacitation time", I'll tell you about the inconsistency of that buzz term; I can't count the number of people I have examined who were shot with a single small caliber firearm projectiles who died within a matter of minutes, those projectiles didn't leave much of any "Wound Cavity", they simply bounced around in an abdominal/thoracic cavity to penetrate multiple Hollow Organs/Arteries, AND YET I have examined people/game who were shot with hand cannon/hunting rifles/military grade firearms, penetrated by multiple LARGE caliber firearm projectiles, many minutes/hours after being shot, with large entrance/exist wounds and "Wound Cavity(s)"...who were quite alive and very capable...continued of functioning to a high degree. The idea of Ballistic Gel to inform about "Incapacitation Time" is laughable, and more likely the only "extrapolation" of that, is simply based on a SPREAD percentage that is based on WHAT anatomy is penetrated and to what degree...maybe.

The only thing i would call in to question on the TR Bull Moose target is: what materials are the glasses and case made of? Most people don't know that 99.99% of glasses lenses sold today are not glass. They are polymer. And based on some antique specs in my family's collection, cases were made of a carton/ cardboard material with a shellac over the outside. And some cases were made out of tin.
