- Will World Series Sprintcars happen in 2022/2023?
What has happened to the 360ci division?
When will Sprintcars Australia implement a proper media & marketing plan?
What is the new mandatory impact indicator?
What is the mentioned crack down on traction control all about?
Are cockpit support bars now mandatory?
Toby speaks with SCCA National Executive Secretary Mark Richards to answer all of that and more in this video.

Great work Toby. Very interesting interview.
I have a couple of observations (my personal opinions from the interview):
1. It seems there are a lot of fingers pointed back onto the state member clubs when it comes to decisions made for the sport, the SCCA seems to have the expectation they'll enforce any rule changes and directives on division changes. If this is the case, why does the SCCA exist if it leaves the clubs to do the grunt work?
2. How can the SCCA wholehartedly ban traction control devices up to this point when they have even openly admitted they're about to start investigations on how to find the devices and perhaps dont know entirely how to police their use?
3.I understand the concerns around the tyre shortage and fuel costs but WSS must surely not revert to a 'one heat' series, this does not encourage punters through the gate and if many knew that they were only going to watch a third of what would normally see, they wouldn't go. If it means teams need to more carefully select and plan what events they attend going forward, then my thoughts are 'so be it' until the situation resolves. I love Sprintcar racing like everyone else here but ticket prices aren't cheaper to see less racing and the one heat model is too great of a disadvantage for teams attending to have a bad race and end their night.
4. Combining 360s and LS cars is an absolute farce. They should have had '2 classes within a class', who is going to turn up with an LS car playing for prizemoney up against the next bloke that will smoke him with a 360. No contest. Non sensical. Also to say that Mandy Searles opinion is irrelevant because she isn't a formal representative is supremely ignorant. She's probably done more for the 360s than the SCCA has in a long time. To throw the suggestion that the SCCA won't approach anyone for a warranted opinion because they're not a designated member is completely ridiculous.
5. Pro Sprints - the word 'pro' in my mind means obviously professional, the top level. I don't consider this class really at the top level, given most in this class most likely run on tight budgets and are more so a grasroots class I'd suggest. Why couldn't they have been called Limited Sprints or something similar?
All great points, mate.
The SCCA was able to put forward a motion for the impact indicator, but are asking SMC members to vote to bring in other changes.
They clearly have the power to have anything considered, so why not implement a media/marketing plan?
@@SprintCarHub yeah mate exactly. They're choosing when they have the power and when they don't want it. At least they could develop some media objectives to say by 2024 we want to be doing x, y, z. It just seems token gesture... "We want to do this, BUT..."
Toby would be a shoe-in for that role. But he performs a far better service to the sport in doing what he does with Sprint Car Hub.
Another great video albeit i am a bit late to the party in viewing and commenting. The media and marketing response reminded me of what conversations would look like way back before social media was around. How the premier speedway category can have such a poor presence on social media, and not have dedicated people to create content shows just how far we have to go. I agree we're all passionate speedway people that love the sport but love isn't going to keep the sport going or pay the bills.
Thanks Toby for your great work with sprint car hub, really enjoy the variety of content and insights into the category, the different drivers and personalities, and the behind the scenes on race night - awesome stuff!
You have done it again Toby. Never in the past has anyone from the SCCA come fwd and told us so much. Sprintcarhub has opened a whole new world to us who have lived our lives in Speedway. Please continue to interview anyone who will tell us more about behind the scenes of Speedway…….Maryann
Thank you Maryann.
I’m really glad we can start this dialogue and hopefully it’s just the start of what future content we can do together for people like yourself.
When doing these interviews I constantly try to think of what other people would want to hear/know.
-Toby
Another fantastic video Toby. For someone like myself possibly entering the sprintcar ranks this information is very much appreciated. Hopefully SCCA will give you some funding to put your ideas into reality.
My goal is to race with the world of outlaws full time as a Canadian
Thank you, Troy.
The aim of this channel is to provide the best, unique content and when our sport doesn’t invest in media in a proper manner, it makes our job easy.
Glad you enjoyed the video and I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
-Toby
fantastic video Toby there should be way more media coverage of our sport ! Surely sprintcars would get more views on tv than reruns of american pickers and other show like that. 7mate have a few car shows which are good but a sprintcar show would be awesome! i no from being a videographer of sprintcars in tassie that so many people say how good a show would be for our sport
I like your question about the media side! good to know there's at least thoughts about moving towards TV!
ACT does have a speedway actually. Not sure what is required to bring it to class 1 for sprint cars but is definitely cleared for open wheelers (speed cars etc). Damn it would be nice to see sprint cars in Canberra!
The one man band is doing well. Thanks Toby for another great interview. God Bless from Sydney.
Thank you, mate.
I’d love to see a TEAM of people employed to flood us all with Sprint Car racing content.
It has to happen.
-Toby
@@SprintCarHub No word on if, or when we'll ever see a "410 Wingless Sprintcar Class in Australia anytime soon I suppose?
Great video, do have any videos of the season Final at eastern creek speedway
How good is sprintcar hub absolute 🔥🔥🔥 keep up the good work Toby
Thank you, Ben!
I really appreciate you supporting the channel.
Just saw your merch order come through, too. 👍🏼
All the best.
-Toby
If a full WSS can’t be run then I believe it shouldn’t go ahead. If I understand it right they are saying they will cut the heats down to one, as a fan that doesn’t sound great. Another great video.
Yep - It’s hard to be excited about a heavily conpromised series.
They clearly have some work to do so we’ll see what they come up with.
-Toby
Really great stuff, Toby. And kudos to Mark from SCCA for his willingness to connect with you. Excellent and insightful content. Many thanks
Yep - I also appreciate Mark for happily answering any questions.
Thank you for watching and commenting, Marty.
-Toby
Awesome video Toby your right about the social media side more definitely needs to be done because people will watch and interact not everyone can get to all events
But still love the sport and want the opportunity to watch it when they can and get the stories before during and after the races 👍👌🇦🇺🏁
Wow, that was a great interview. Being in the US, I'm now beginning to understand the structure of sprint car racing there.
Glad you enjoyed it, Bill.
Sprint Car racing in Aus is structured fairly different than in the USA and I’m glad we could provide some info on that.
Thanks for supporting the channel, mate.
-Toby
The whole 360ci deal..... That is because you need state level 360ci feeder racing to be able to have a national 360ci level. . The VSC/VSA chose the LS engine as a replacement for their old 336ci rule
Very interesting watch. Cheers to Toby!
Thank you, mate.
Hope you got something out of it!
Great video! Really gave them opportunity to delve a bit deeper than the short press release. Still missing some information I’d like to know about the ProSprints but it was a good start.
Regarding the marketing and TV stuff. It’s a bit easy to look at coverage that’s only been shown on Foxtel with very minimal marketing work and say it’s not worth it. I’d really like to see someone take some risks and not stream racing behind a paywall of subscriptions. There are a large number of motor racing championships around the world that use TH-cam to livestream their races which helps unlock new audiences and potential fans. But if we could somehow get major races televised on Free to Air then I really think the sport could take off. In the Motorsport landscape I honestly think that Dirt Track/Speedway racing is our T20 Cricket in comparison to F1 and Supercars that’s more like Test and One Cricket. We just need to find a way to unlock the potential that is there.
Great points, mate.
I like the comparison between sports.
At the end of the day, I really think our product can be first class. Sure, there are areas that need to be well-thought out like rain-outs, track prep standards, and the like.
BUT we can’t just ignore an effort because it’s all too hard.
-Toby
Well done again Toby. Great stuff mate.
Thank you, David.
It’s a long video but plenty of info right throughout!

The SCCA have never Classed Mandy Or the Australian Sprintcar Allstars as a formal representative as they are not classed as a State Member Club, as are World Series (but the have Speedway Australia Representation) The communication to the via the SCCA and SCM in the stat the Series is home based in (SRAVIC) has always been very minimal, when it comes to allowing their stewards/officials to attend the conferences they have to be formally invited and only allowed as a spectator to listen and watch with no allowance of involvement in any of the discussions. The have all seem to have forgotten that Mandy was of the originals of the SRA for many years as well as president and a life member of the SRAVIC, being successful in World Series Sprintcars with both successfully promoting and running the series for a number if years. Given such a massive change in the rules for the classification of the class and the representation of those drivers/owners for the current 360 class the respect should have been given to them via a separate state or national representation of those who race/ own in that class to have a voice in the rulings regarding them.
The forthcoming of allowing those engines in combined class to consider it a cheaper and entry level should really consider the word CRATE as a sealed and non-worked setup as there is the possibility to purchase one of these as a CRATE for a reasonable price then throw a considerable amount of dollars to build and add to these to make considerably powered and costly,
Referencing the Traction control and tyre doping investigations they have both been mentioned many times at prior conferences and had been pushed into the feel of the too hard to police basket, with the current shifts in technology I believe this will be an ongoing thing over many years to try and keep up with,
Thanks for the video. I think TV is a dated focus, digital media has surpassed it in viewership and income. Saying that, promotion of the sport shouldn't be targeted at income from the content but increased attendance and sponsorship exposure. Provide it free for maximum views.
The pipe dream would be getting Red Bull signature series style of coverage like Crandon or the Motorcross had. I know the driver and team details from the other side of the world because of the entertaining content they had. Approaching them is a pipe dream but worth investing in.
Somewhere around 60/40 ratio of on and off track, F1 is somewhat boring without knowing the off track stuff wrapped onto hour episodes per event.
Add in an official podcast for between events and there could be a decent media package without 10s of thousands in broadcast fees.
My mate did some Super sedan content years ago, he'll be back in Brisbane soon. I'd volunteer (photography / podcast experience) if you can get dedicated editing. A few regional coverage teams, 3 cameras, one broad track action one infield, one pits. A commentator in the pit and if possible established track race commentary.
Streaming events provides a channel for the converted people to watch.
Streaming will never grab new fans.
TV is the only way to put a sport in front of new fans.
a ton of info great work!
Thanks, Kayne!
I really appreciate you watching and leaving a message mate.

More great work Toby. It highlights how stale and rusted-on the SCCA are.
What they are doing to the sport is like what recent governments have done to electricity supply in this country.
The vital need to promote the product in new media is overshadowed by a so far fruitless focus on traction control.
Their efforts to 'protect their brand' has taken the governing body backwards with the recent ACCC forcings.
Remember that the biggest improvement in recent Sprintcar history, the move to 410's DIDN'T come from the SCCA.
Their 'system' for making change sounds great, however that's like believing the local politician that you voted in is doing what his/her constituents want and not voting in line with party policy. Some of it may be due to member apathy, but much of it is borne from being told that 'we can't do that'. What drivers and owners want doesn't always get taken forward.
Pro Sprints? Really? Maybe I'm dyslexic. Poor Sprints. I guess it's better than Racesaver Sprints as used in some places in the US.
Without Mandy's efforts with the Allstar series would there even be any 360's? Series like that should be run in every state. At both levels.
We all know that NSW is primarily a one track state. So Pro Sprints will probably only run at ECS. At least that might free up other divisions to help country tracks survive.
Maybe the SCCA should be looking at the big picture. Promote instead of Restrict. Getting cars on tracks and promoting the drivers is key to building a following.
Like allowing Sprintcars or Wingless to run at more than one track on the same night. Instead of protecting the brand again. Australia has some big states. It's absolutely ludicrous that competitors who can't afford to travel a couple of hundred km are unable to run at a closer venue. They need to realise they represent ALL their competitors, not just the top couple of dozen.
Thanks, Phil.
I think you’ve made some good points.
I also think that we need to realise that our sport needs both a premier level of racing/racers to showcase, and also a way of supporting the many local events.
They are 2 different models, but need to help each other.
If the sport wants to forever look after every person who decides they want a Sprint Car, then we will never grow.
Numbers are important, but not if we are compromising the ability to have premier series/teams.
-Toby
@@SprintCarHub The reality is how many tracks can cope with 50+ car counts on a regular basis, or at all for some places, and what does that do to showcase the division week in week out. Considering a successful future is reliant upon getting new fans into the front gate, as well as bringing through new competitors, is having a one night Classic or Knoxville type show every meeting a good thing? For the competitors, or the fans, or the track? Further, how does that help to grow newcomers when many will be limited to a time trial, a heat and a C, or one of two B Mains. (whoever came up with that concept!). Limiting entry to say 40 cars might hurt the back gate, but would provide the impetus for a more efficient race program and encourage wider growth of the sport.
Every racer needs to be considered. However, that doesn't mean that they every one can appear on the same stage every night. Sprintcars are the top level of our sport. Yet anyone can just walk up and start at that level. Barely any experience, qualification, or proof of capability required. In the old days you had A and B grade. Maybe they should bring it back.
No WSS at regional tracks ????…..is Warrnambool regional ?
Mt Gambier ?
Murray Bridge ?
Sounds like no WSS for SA
The term regional just refers to the smaller, less-funded tracks like Maryborough, Lismore, etc. as opposed to being regional geographically. The tracks you listed I am sure will still get a round.
Very informative. Thanks
Thank you, mate!
-Toby
Very well done, thanks.
Thank you, Richard.
I appreciate you letting me know your thoughts.
-Toby
Awesome content mate
Thank you sir!
-Toby
Excellent informative video.
Thank you, Roger!
Stoked to hear you got something out of it!
-Toby
1. Get serious about traction control penalties, make the deterrent serious if you get caught. Why not $50,000 and 12 month ban from all competition for driver and team owner. Extreme yes, but a deterrent DEFINITELY.
2. I understand Mark saying it's their job to administer the sport but he seemed quite agreeable with what you were mentioning but a little apathetic if I'm being brutally honest. Just my opinion anyway... Keep up the good work Toby
This is really cool to know thanks for the video
Thank you!
We really appreciate you watching and letting us know your thought.
Hopefully they're coming to Geraldton for the world series. I've been looking forwards to it since they announced it before covid
Do you travel to any other races?
@@SprintCarHub yes but Geraldton is my home track and I've been looking forward to them coming for the past few years
@@SprintCarHub I go to the motorplex a lot
I have a feeling the climate change crazies are really going to start having a negative effect on racing in the US and Australia as of now they left racing alone but it's only a matter of time before they start attacking it
All I can say is enjoy it while you can. Download all your favorite races because they are going to ruin everything.
305, crate motor and 360 running as one #"STUPID" choose one and push it best way follow the Victorian way to run 360's it has been successful for a number of years why try mix classes/ engines that are non competitive to be made look stupid just to make numbers and have spectators sit on the hill saying WTF did i pay for
There not that uncompetitive and the 25000 cheaper upfront and only need rebuilding every 3-5 seasons
They need to do away with 305s and run 360s anyway in my opinion.
That answer about promoting the sport was such a nothing answer. Basically can’t be bothered. As someone who doesn’t follow the sport and only recently went to their first event. It’s amazing. You should be promoting it more. Fill the grand stands more! If you don’t want to promote the sport your running. Then step aside because there won’t be a sport to run.
Another great video 👍
Silly question... But could the traction control help with tyre deg and the tyre shortage for this current time? (e.g. make the tyre survive 20% more = races)
You can’t do a short term (1 season) of a rule change as it makes hard to remove later.
I miss my monthly oval express magazine 😔
Don’t we all 🥹
Meanwhile in America they are looking into means of allowing traction control. Please tell me how a LS motor is competitive against a 360 when it physically can't be. Once again SCCA has dropped the ball and no balls leaving it to clubs to enforce rule changes, SCCA need to grow a set and do their own work, if not why are they needed because they do nothing for the sport in marketing and development.
After having a very low dollar traction control system. I think it’s time to bring it’s legalization to the table. Under $300USD. Tires last longer, saves engine, cheaper than getting crazy expensive shocks. People saying it’s taking the driver out of the equation, what is a $10,000 set of shocks doing? Hours of tire prep? Even the way certain engines are built with certain torque curves? This was just a test of mine because I am a lone crew member at the racetrack and driver. When it was implemented I was just as fast as everyone else. At a quarter of the cost or less……
Meanwhile in America they are talking ways to allow and police traction control, series owning box seems to be the best option as all will be the same.
@@vaughanoke1059 that’s where I am. It’s mostly illegal. But we have some open motor rules classes. This is where it was used. It drives the price down when it becomes legal. The units that have to be used, because the class bans it, are extremely expensive. I have a soft right rear that has lasted 3 nights now. It’s really a money thing with me.
So you say 360 racing has been in trouble at a national level for years.
You have identified the most successful 360 series as being Mandy Searle's Allstars, yet that successful promoter was not brought into SCCA discussions , even at the very least on a consultancy level ?
Seems completely illogical, that someone who's has such great experience as well as competitor and fan support, expertly in that class, was not in the room to advise on the best way forward for the class.
You touched on the elephant in the room, in that "promoters" are reliant on pit gate income. As either a team owner, racer or fan, that mentality is a massive slap in the face, and a direct result of inept "promotion".
At the core of "promotion", should surely be marketing. So, on that, why in the hell
was the name change process NOT handled through consultation with an expert marketing firm ?
Rather, you had a chat amongst the same-olds, and came up with ProSprints, a knock-off name from The States, that NOBODY can identify with.
How does one promote a CAR without the word CAR in the name ?
I see ProSprints and immediately think I'm buying a ticket to watch dudes in a foot race for cash.
Now add a starter. And I will actually want to actually watch them.
You don’t watch because they don’t have starters?
@@SprintCarHub I hate that aspect yes. waste of time. Would rather watch a good dirt late model show.
@@Rob-tl9md you do realize sprintcars don't run transmissions and are direct drive 🤣🤣🤣
@holdenrock8 worked on the no start push start go karts for many years. I'm well aware what a sprint car consists of. You add a small clutch, starter, lithium battery and everyone has to run em and it's settled. Pretty simple.
U.S. dont have these rules
Some they do, some they don’t 👍🏼
