Brilliant guy, very much in the mold of the self destructive romantic artist. His best dozen songs are as good as anyone's, probably better: Dylan, Hendrix, you name it...he had The Gift.
I love and miss you Chris. It almost makes me sad to watch him on youtube, but I also feel lucky to be able to just find him and listen to him anytime I want to hear his voice again. Such a poet.
I was at this show. It is great to see again. The girl I was with came back from the bar as said " He looks homeless" minutes after Chris had said "This is a song for us homeless people." I realize that it sounds kind of bad, but it was exactly fitting.
I only found out he died, i've known his music since basically day one in my life and i am so humbled by the love shared by all of you for him. His impact in my life and for anyone who is lucky enough to find him is undescribable, i cherish few things in exisatance like i cherish Chris and his music. Mad love, hope and Peace to all, etranlly united though pure expression. May life grace you all.
The imagery in this song is staggeringly powerful... "Prayed to the burning tires..." - you can see a homeless guy keeping his hand warm pointing my out to the fire with extended arms like a devote person praying...
Beautiful angel that had the courage to do it his way and a big inspiration to me now that I'm in my 50s . I used to think shred or metal etc, now I rarely even plug in an electric.
Some of the best quality footage of Chris anywhere on the web....and captured at one of the high-water marks of his career....thanks so much for posting.
Daaaamn, Chris killed it. I remember I was in high school at this time and all his shows were 21+, now I get to see what I missed! Unfortunately I never got to see him live but this is so well recorded its almost as good!
Sherman Whitley His voice was so very unique. My older brother passed away some years back of the same. It is a demon and hard to fight. Thank you for replying and be well.
Summer is lost now The frost, it closing in To the cold gospel dollar The poor man walks in sin I can't get no entrance, the doors all in rows I pray into the distance, let me out of these heavy clothes I'm begin', Indian summer, I need some return So hard to get warm now It's so easy to get burned Down on the pavement, the laws are learned So hard to get warm where, it's so easy to get burned When a sister called up, said how long have broken down? I said there too much ice around here, to find no solid ground While I just squeeze a season, from this paper bag I pray to the burning tires, and wrap my feet in rags Begin', Indian summer, I need some return So hard to get warm now, so easy to get burned Down on the pavement, the laws are learned It's so hard to get warm where, it's so easy to get burned Now the skies empty The street is sweating tears Communion at the station For a million grinding years While I'm riding out this century The harvest engine sing From the church of mercenaries To a naked virgin spring I'm singing, Indian summer, I need some return So hard to get warm now So easy to get burned Down on the pavement, the laws are learned It's so hard to get warm where, it's so easy to get burned Hard to get warm where, it's so easy to get burned
Chris Whitley and Jeff Buckley are the 2 artists I wish were still alive making music today. What a loss...

What a loss, we love Chris and his incredible talent, Eric Watson
I love your voice Mr. Whitley. You play your guitar as if she is an extention of you. Hope to sing with you in Heaven. ❤

I need to go back in time - this was my young time, my happy time, and Chris was always so beautiful. Miss you, Chris!

Chris will be noticed as a legend before it's over with.

Indeed. Never enough recognised.
Saw him as a solo artist. Blew everyone away!
How precious this video is now that he has passed, honestly he's is one of the people I most want to meet if I make it to heaven.
Supreme poetry, his playing, his singing, his vibe...whatever it is one feels inside when in the presence of real art, beauty
Ahhhhh....it's always a treat to revisit Chris' music. A true artist who left a legacy of great music and adoring fans. Thanks, Chris!
Love this guy. It may be years before most people realize and discover this genius. Indian Summer is a masterpiece
Always leaves me speechless. Thanks for sharing this. what a gift! Peace
an angel come to earth to give us clues. Taken by cancer for no reason. All we can do is commit to his depth.
Ah...there was a great deal of self abuse that led to that particular case of cancer...
Beautiful angel that had the courage to do it his way and a big inspiration to me now that I'm in my 50s . I used to think shred or metal etc, now I rarely even plug in an electric.

“Pray to the burning tires, wrap my feet in rags”~ powerful
Love this song. Has anyone ever heard of Gavin DeGraw's version?? Would make Chris proud!
A flawless diamond unrecognized because of the broken loupes of the “industry”
How did he pass . I am saddened . I never heard he died. Please let me know how this most talented artist passed.

Summer is lost now
The frost, it closing in
To the cold gospel dollar
The poor man walks in sin
I can't get no entrance, the doors all in rows
I pray into the distance, let me out of these heavy clothes
I'm begin', Indian summer, I need some return
So hard to get warm now
It's so easy to get burned
Down on the pavement, the laws are learned
So hard to get warm where, it's so easy to get burned
When a sister called up, said how long have broken down?
I said there too much ice around here, to find no solid ground
While I just squeeze a season, from this paper bag
I pray to the burning tires, and wrap my feet in rags
Begin', Indian summer, I need some return
So hard to get warm now, so easy to get burned
Down on the pavement, the laws are learned
It's so hard to get warm where, it's so easy to get burned
Now the skies empty
The street is sweating tears
Communion at the station
For a million grinding years
While I'm riding out this century
The harvest engine sing
From the church of mercenaries
To a naked virgin spring
I'm singing, Indian summer, I need some return
So hard to get warm now
So easy to get burned
Down on the pavement, the laws are learned
It's so hard to get warm where, it's so easy to get burned
Hard to get warm where, it's so easy to get burned
I wonder what Beevis and Butthead would say about this guy?
did u hear what he said- a song for us homeless people- most of whom look like him
