Man I love and miss Chris. I like to tell anybody who will listen that I got to hang with him one night. He was in Buffalo in support of Dirt Floor. I was doing some promo work for Messenger Records to hype the show and ended up with a bunch of posters that Chris was nice enough to sign for people. After we were done I just asked if he wanted to go out for a beer with the group we were with. He said sure and before I new it my wife and I were driving him to the bar. It was surreal because we were both such huge fans. He was a kind and amazingly gifted man who continues to touch and bless my world.
Joe Joslin Bless you Joe.. I like hearing Chris was so sociable with you and your wife. Never met him, but closest I got was up against the stage in Chicago, at Martyr's.. back in '99 I believe.
That guitar melody at the end, like in so many of his songs, always seems like it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. Until the next time. And the next. Even after 30 years. Hope you’re playing somewhere else brother. 💔
Never forget hearing" Living with the law" the first time. Listened through headphones on a cassette player for three days painting an old junker house. The songs burned so vividly deep in the groove. Don't believe I have ever heard the equal before or since! Left me with a musical longing that I have yet to touch. The lyrical content laid it out sort of like a trip down a mountain road in a dense early morning fog looking into an all day rain Inspiring with urgent desperation! RIP Chris Whitley.
Had to respond as your recollection also resonated with me. I was a teenager listening to MuchMusic (Canadian equivalent to MTV) back in the day, and when I first heard "Big Sky Country", and later the whole album (also on cassette) it created an feeling of intensity, and this sonic landscape, that I have not experienced before or since, either. I have it on vinyl now, and it takes me back to that place and time, but it also just takes me somewhere else, somewhere that only Chris Whitley could create. Such a bright light, and loss.
I saw him at the Park West in Chicago in the early 90s Just a guitar and a wood box with a mic in it he taped his foot on the box for a bass drum sound Awsome
Was that part of his tour with John Campbell? We don't have that bootleg, but do have one from a week earlier. Let me know if you'd like to hear it; Chris covered ZZ Top's "Jesus Just Left Chicago."
@@2Dutchy Show with Campbell was October 1992, but Chris also played Park West in October 1996. I know he 'co-starred' with Shocked but don't recall when - probably mid to late 90s.
Saw him in the late 90’s in a small bar in Portland. No band just him, his guitars and an amplifier. Amazing I will never forget. He didn’t look well at all, very sad. His performance was awe inspiring. Rock n Roll Hall of Fame what are you waiting for?
I’ve listened to him over the years but this is the first time I’ve heard this song. I’m completely floored. The most soul crushing song and performance ever.
Yes, it's an unforgettable song - I hear the opening notes and am stopped in my tracks. We at the ATCW FB group are very fond, as this post illustrates: allthingschriswhitley.com/2015/04/15/i-forget-you-every-day-playlist/
It was one of those things, It's Always one of those things, I'm in the lobby of the Granada Theater ( Dallas Tx, ) waiting for the Aussie band The Church, when I struck up an conversation with a very nice couple, and somehow Chris came up in the conversation, and I told them that I missed two of his shows, and that was when he told me that Chris had died, I was floored. Now I realize that one of the shows were postponed due to the cancer. It was one of those things
I started listening to Chris when the Poison Girl ep came out. Finally got to see him on Dirt Floor with Johnny Lang. Incredible sense of awe when I hear his music. I wept at the news of his passing. Sorrow and gratitude still eminates at the playing of his music. His songs resonated in my soul like none other. Tragic. Genius with grit. Only one who comes close for me is Tom Waits.
I just discovered him today, after all these years. Right off the bat the first song I heard from him I knew this was a rare talent to be heard. As they say the candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. Shame that cancer took him so young.
Alex Helenius Alex, you can find lots of bootlegs of concerts on the LIVE MUSIC ARCHIVE. Can't insert the link here, but you should be able to google it.
Saw Chris Whitley in San Francisco back in 1991; "Living With The Law" had just been released. Toad the Wet Sprocket was the opening act. Great show... good times.
I used to alternate happy hours with Chris at the Sun Mountain Cafe in the Village way back in 1988. We worked different evenings, so I got to sit and watch him a few times. He used to just lay a microphone down next to his stomp box and play the hell out of his ancient National Steel guitar. It was an education.
I had the good fortune to meet Chris and videotaped his Rocket House tour which is also on TH-cam as Chris Whitley and Live. Based on his body of work (over 100 original songs) and his musicianship (his mastery of the National Guitar) he should be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. But it will never happen, because some idiot on the selection committee thinks Dolly Parton should get in instead. This performance of "I Forget you Every Day" is absolutely beautiful. Thank you Kate for uploading it. Rest in Peace Chris.
And thank you, Steven, for sharing your RH tour video with us. I just added you to the ATCW Facebook group. Welcome! You can learn a bit about the group and its resources here: wp.me/p3GDKV-sH
I have been a fan of his since his voice first hit my ears. I used to have a boyfriend who looked so much like Chris it is scary. I remember him although every day as he broke my heart. Choose booze over me.
Discovered Chris back in 1994 and was addicted to his music ever since. I even have rare music from his Noh Rodeo days in Belgium. We have the same birthday, pretty cool.
Bless you Katie, truly, for all the hard work you've done compiling all this wonderful content. Chris deserves to be remembered right up there with the finest singers and guitarists who have impacted our lives, for a number of us, his music has a depth and soul that simply transcends so much of the music out there, it's really a special cultural treasure. Bless you, Katie, for giving so many the opportunity to discover the magic of Chris Whitley, hear him play and absorb his sweetness and virtuosity.
Bless YOU, David. I'm very happy to foster appreciation of Chris's many gifts and to preserve his legacy so that others might know what you and I already know.
WOW. Just found this version...one of the few artists then or now that is better live than on record. GREAT band. I wish he had done more with Lanois, a match for all time, right?
His CD "Live at Martyrs" (Chicago) is wonderful. Find it while you can. Saw him several times there. At one show he seemed to be really PO'd at the bar crowd for not paying more attention to the music. And he took it out on his guitar, played with rage, was just awesome.
michael p. I too saw Chris's show ( one of them) right up against the stage.. Magical. Why is it so hard to see footage of the shoes at Martyr's?! Awesome show I saw.
I remember hearing Chris for the first time and being blown away, it was early 90 ties Belgium and very much like this recording, 't was before I saw Thelma and Louise in the movie theater, I missed the whole Brad pitt thing, 'cause I recognised clearly this unusual sound.
Daniel Lanois knew how good Chris was. Lanios is one of the best producers out there, and not to mention, a damned good musician in his own right. He has continued the legacy with Trixie.
What a voice it was an honor and a pleasure to have worked for him
Would love to know about your working with him: on tours? recordings?

I have a great story Too , Bowery ballroom nyc, .

I KNOW! Gets me every time, from the first chord to the last....
We miss you, Chris.
Great performance of a great song.
Why when I listen to his music I fell in a strange mix of sadness and happines? Do you understand me? He was so great
Totally understand, He was brilliant Gone way to soon
I get it
That’s because music you listen to is the soundtrack of your life
❤

Living with the law ,one of the greatest albums of all time,RIP Chris .
This song and Dust Radio are my anthems.
Love how Mr. Whitley flips into head voice. Beautiful.
Chris transports me.
signature sound from the first chord... damn what a loss
Very true - I hear that first chord and the world stops spinning ....
His tortured soul and emotions are poured into that steel guitar, and man does it sound like the Blues in the best possible way,,,,,,
Soulful. Tormented.
I stop everything. . . because of his words and his sound.
Chris in his absolute prime. Thank you.
he was gutbucket. he saw and felt things that we all suffer from but none of us could find the words for.
Visionary, poet. Guitar player
it's encouraging to see that some people get just what this guy was
Forever and ever, AMEN!
Yes. Just oozes talent. Love him
