Here's Why You Should Use The Parking Brake BEFORE Shifting Into Park

  • In this video, I tell you why you should use the parking brake before shifting into park. If you are driving an automatic car, you will likely be shifting the gear selector into park and then applying the parking brake (depending on what you were taught). However, you should always be engaging the emergency brake before you shift into park. I tell you exactly why that is the case in this video.

    Never skip the emergency brake, even on flat surfaces like in a parking lot. If someone taps you from behind, they can ruin your transmission in one shot. Is it likely? Probably not, but why chance it.
    Good video, and explanation of how it works!

    You forgot after you put the parking brake on while still having your foot on the brakes, put it into neutral, remove foot from brakes then put it into park. Putting it into neutral will put the weight of the car onto the brakes.

    I totally agree with you! I used to park by normally just shifting into park when on a flat surface until I learned online that I was actually supposed to use the parking brake even when on a flat surface. When compared to a manual transmission, park to me is actually like first gear in a manual car, which will keep the car from rolling even if the e-brake fails. So this is the method I used to park since then…
    1. Stop
    2. Shift to Neutral
    3. Engage Parking Brake.
    4. Release Brake Pedal
    5. Depress Brake Pedal Again
    6. Shift to Park.

    parking pawl-a hammer-shaped pin-is released into one of the grooves in your transmission gear to keep it from turning. Unless you use your parking brake, this tiny pin is all that's stopping your 2-ton vehicle from rolling off without you

      I have an automatic transmission. And i use to put the car in P before engaging the handbrake and I would (when parked on even a slight incline) hear my transmission/gearbox make a noise i felt was not good.
      So when i started doing the sequence as you listed it, that noise went away.
      So always put the car in neutral, then lift the handbrake so the weight of the car is resting on the handbrake and not the transmission, THEN put the car in Park.

      We have regular -20c winters. If you use it every day it should be fine. If it freezes the handbrake cables could be worn out and it wont properly lubricate inside the wire. You should have your cables replaced. Had this happen to me in a 2003 year model car. Very annoying to try to get to work and the wheels wont spin. Had to floor it for a while to get them unstuck :D

      Depends do you have a newer vehicle with start and stop technology? If not then it doesnt hurt to do that if you keep your foot on the brake. The worst is usually when you are moving very slowly. Some dual clutch cars really dont like that. For example you stop move slowly 1meter stop move slowly 3meter etc.

    It honestly doesn't matter. As long as you got both engaged your fine. Your never going to have a parking paw go out due to weight they're designed for weight there may be 1 or 2 freak cases but this will not happen. It genuinely does not matter which order you do it, the transmission is built to deal with weights and the parking paw are built to deal with weight you won't get any crazy extra amount of life from either by doing this in this order.

      As long as you have your foot firmly on the brake pedal when you shift to park and pull the handbrake (E-brake/parking brake), the order does not matter.
      The weight of the vehicle won't shift while your foot is on the brake, so the parking pawl won't have any load on it🤦‍♂

  • @jacobpereira7045
    @jacobpereira7045 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    On a incline or decline put the car into park engaging the parking gear. Then slowly let off the brake and let the parking pawl fall into one of the many slots for it on its own dedicated cog. THEN engage parking brake. The parking gear does a good job of locking up the gears but the ebrake is just locks of one of the rear calipers or drums stopping it from rolling if the parking gear gives out. This is why you also turn towards a curb on a decline. Just in case the car gains a little movement hopefully the curb can stop it from traveling further

    I actually let go of the brake after engaging the parking brake and wait a few seconds to make sure it alone is holding the car still, then shift into park. Is this a problem?

    • @981moro
      @981moro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shouldnt be if it holds it. I assume that your car is in D while you do this so the car is still trying to move forward. It could in theory wear out the handbrake cables if they are really really old and weak. Imagine a invisible man trying to push your car while you do this. But in most cases it wont be a problem.

      @@981moro but how it could worn out cables, if the force applied to the brake pads doesn't change?

    • @981moro
      @981moro 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peteriskrumings8771 it does change. When you apply the brakes all four wheels have brake pressure. But when you use the parking brake usually only the rear wheels are using brake pressure. So for example on a front wheel driven car the wheels are still trying to move while only the back wheels are holding the car in place.

    • @peteriskrumings8771
      @peteriskrumings8771 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@981moro That would wear out brake pads and eventually rotors, yes, but I was refering to the cables and the force applied to them because you especially mentioned them in your reply. Maybe I misread and you ment brake pads not cables because then it would not leave me puzzled how the force to the cables may change depending on draging force to the wheels and how the slightly changes to the force applied would wear out cables faster... That's all. :)
      I mean, even if there is a very, very slight increase in cable tension when brakes are applied and wheel is still trying to move before full stop, I think it is insignificant (I may be wrong there ofcourse) and instead cable wearing happens - no surprise here - because of cable movement and cable aging, lack of lubrication, getting rusted etc....

    • @981moro
      @981moro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peteriskrumings8771 here we always salt the roads every winter so its not uncommon to snap the rusted parking cable. But as i said they would have to be in a really really bad condition. Sure the cable could also just snap simply by pulling the brake.

    The likelihood of you messing up your parking paw is very unlikely also in most cars its not a pin , coming someone who actually works on cars the parking paw is actually supposed to hold the cars weight its designed to do that and it actually needs weight to fully engage thats why the car slightly rolls when you put it in park because it needs weight to lock in park

  • @scod3908
    @scod3908 ปีที่แล้ว

    Whether you use handbrake first or shit to park first, it doesn't matter, and here's why:
    As long as your foot is on the brake pedal until the transmission is in park and the handbrake is applied, the weight of the car won't shift to the parking pawl!
    This is easy to prove, on level ground with foot brake applied, simply shift to park and apply the handbrake, then turn vehicle off and take foot off the brake pedal. At this point, the weight is *not* on the parking pawl, and this is easily proven by slowly releasing the handbrake as you will feel the vehicle rest on the parking pawl in the transmission.

      With your foot on the regular brake, put the car in neutral. Set your E brake, let go of your regular brake, shift in to park. I've had 7 cars and do this with all of em, it doesn't matter if it's a flat surface or not I do it always
