    I hired a dry liner to retrofit insulation on a 10 meter wall, once the standard prep was done. I brewed a coffee and went off to write a short email. I didn't even finish the email before the guy had installed the top and bottom tracks fitted and 12 upright studs up.
    He left the studs loose so he could fit the 600mm rockwool sound slabs, pushing each one up tight, so there were no gaps, then screwed top and bottom. I was blown away by how fast the wall went up. With the addition of an L bracket every other stud, the wall is rock solid. MF is the future.

    There is absolutely no good reason to use a wood frame over a steel frame which is the closest thing to printing your home and erecting it in days with just a few unskilled guys. You save money on the wood but you loose money on labor so at the end steel is cheaper and lasts forever!

    By chance I been looking into building a house (be in the future) I want it to be my forever home. So I’m thinking about using steel. Do you think a house could be built with steel that has bay windows,attic (that’s walk in) and a basement with a tornado shelter? Or would wood be a better option? Cause i know wood can rot,break and have damage overall cause of moisture and what not but steel seems to last way longer than wood and safer but not sure if they could do a custom built house that’s steel. Do you you think a house that’s custom designed would fit with steel? Also I heard steel is also good for the environment rather than wood. I know everything has its advantages and disadvantages but steels looks like the better choice (definitely in the long run) but how would replacing it be? Compare to wood frame house?

    • @vm5571
      @vm5571 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To be honest here, there is no more environmentally friendly material than wood. Wood is basically a carbon incorporated by trees from he atmosphere and the only energy used was to cut and process the tree.
      The steel-reinforced concrete on the other hand is a product that is made of the iron ores, aggregate and cement that requires a lot of energy o be produced.
      As long as you can afford it you can do whatever shaped and features you want with steel and concrete, but in order to be practical and build you house in smart way you better to hire the architect or be the one who knows what he does.

      There is also different types of wood buidlings. I really like heavy timber buildings. I think they are the best all around. The problem of metal are ironically fires. Mental is quite weak as any heat will cause it to elongate i.e. push everything outwards, lose strength and warp. The problem of concrete is you are a prisoner and can not breach a wall when needed to and cracking which will let water in.

    • @lornes7526

      No. If anything, you have to know what you're doing in order to meet code. You can't use 25 gauge for exterior load bearing walls, you have to use 20 or less. Stud guage becomes a factor depending on whether you're running 16, 19.2, or 24 inch on your stud spacing. Most people will follow engineered plans, but if you're a DIY guy, make sure you know what you're doing in order to pass inspections.

Drilling holes and hammering u nails takes a lot more work that zip ties a self taping screws…a hole punch is waaayyy faster then a hole saw…metal studs come with holes already in them that’s what plastic grommets are for…wiring a metal stud project is easier and faster than wood on many levels.

    Some of what you say is true but some of it is not true. Your video is misleading due to the incorrect content. Steel is superior to wood. Wood burns, wood rots when exposed to water, wood warps, wood expands and contracts based on relative humidity, insects love wood, you are limited in the distances you can span with wood (even engineered lumber), wood houses will make noise , the walls and ceilings will not be straight. And there is a double digit waste factor with wood. Wood studs and joists are heavier to carry and move. You DO need detailed drawings and inspectors must inspect to catch all the mistakes the framers make. On a 2,000 sq. ft. house, the construction is simple. Ceiling heights are generally low, spans are limited, you can pretty much use dimensional lumber from the warehouse guys and many framers are available. There are building codes and someone must be sure the framers are building according to code. Wood is essentially fastened with nails from airguns. Without special steel clips and straps (which are screwed to the wood members) are needed to have wind resistance and counter heavy wind shear loads. The load bearing beams (from dimensional lumber, engineered lumber or Gluelams) are heavy and hard to get into place and difficult to move. Also the spans are limited and longer spans gets very expensive.
    CFS (cold formed steel) framing can be used in most any building. On small houses it is comparable to wood in place price. The larger and more complex the structure becomes, you have more advantages with CFS (cold formed steel). CFS is available in multiple gauges. You also have the advantage of either buying the material in lengths depending on the struct We are engineers (civil, structural, geo-technical) and construction managers with 30 to 40 years of experience (each of us). Both require calcs, drawings and engineer's seal and signature for residential structures.

  • @michaelsiebesma4535
    @michaelsiebesma4535 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think CFS is a much better product. We can erect a 1200 sq ft frame one story in one day. That includes all trusses. We use frame cad system. We build from 20 gauge to 14 gauge.
    True wood assemblers are easier to find. But metal guys are catching up. Wood is cheaper in most cases. But metal lasts longer. Goes up quicker with less waste. I would choose CFS hands down over wood all day long

    You missed the biggest flaws of wood:
    1. exposure to water or moisture will twist bend and deteriorate your structure very quickly (in matter of hours), with rot and mold as a bonus
    2. wood will sag and bow no matter what under the load, forget about level floors and walls in as little as 5 years after construction
    3. Wood is flammable
    Conclusion: build your whole house with a concrete, steel and glass only (including roof) if you want your house to last and not to repair it every other 5 to 10 years.
    It takes mor planning and effort for comparable price, but you will forget what is maintenance, will sleep well if tornado or hurricane comes over, or forest fires approach behind the hill.
    The Europeans (Germans) are laughing their asses off that we are still building houses from the wood.
