  • Its a dagger, but also a full set of dice. Today we're looking at the Wand Dice, a metal spinner shaped like a phurba (aka Tibetan Spirit Dagger). It looks cool, but does it work as advertised?
You can find the Wand Dice on the Unique Dice website: uniquedice.com/

I do not own the dagger dice, but I can agree that spinning dice definitely have the issue of taking awhile to stop. I own one myself and suggest that the best way to handle it is to spin it, and then *firmly* and *quickly* press on the wheel with a hand and take whatever number is under the needle. If you do this it's much quicker, even if you need to reroll due to the needle being unclear, and if you do it while the spinner is still moving rapidly it's difficult to predict which number the thing will land on. Yes, I do suppose a player could try to cheese it by quickly changing what number is on the spinner, but if you've got a player doing that you've got a number of other problems already, not just a finicky die.

That skit where the Gang all wait for the roll hat me burst out laughing at the very end.
I think I'm in the same boat as you about it: it doesn't look practical at all, and these days I play online so probably not even useful... But It does look so *cool*, though...

I run games over Roll20 these days...I'll say that if I was running a campaign in-person and someone brought this to my table it would be too cool to not let them use it. Though it does fall into the category of "awesome, but impractical".
What I'd probably go with as a rule of sorts is that they can use it for dramatic rolls or when rolls aren't happening frequently, but to use regular dice when convenience becomes important.

I was expecting Todd to accidentally knock it over when describing his action, it looks fairly easy to topple and then it will happily roll off the table.

with a spinner could there be some pegs like on the wheel of fortune wheel or some teeth or ratchet that prevents in-between results?
Thats a thought I had when I got a dice ring that had the same problem. it had a free floating second part, but no stopping system to prevent the indicator from landing somewhere between results. it would also lessen the spin time as it syphons energy with the friction.

I have this. Your criticisms are mostly accurate (but stop the spin with your finger!). Still happy to have it - especially for the dramatic moments, like you mentioned.

Yes I had the same thought. Stopping it with your finger would give a better random result over waiting for the friction of the bearings to do it.

I've used spinners in games..we had a house rule where any spin is a count to three, then stop the spinner with your finger without looking at it.

I think it would actually be fun to see you review different Kickstarter projects but I know that's a little unreasonable to ask given that you would have to both buy into and play it.
Some like Veil of Eternal Night were really neat as well as Zander's Guide to Zombie hunting.

What that think is missing is the brakets like youd have on a planketo board. Something to slow down the roll and ensure it cant land between two numbers.

As a piece of art it's great, but it would get old real fast at the table. Using it a dramatic roll like you mentioned is probably the best use of it.

At least the 20 side spinner has some good bearings. I remember some alternate geometry dice also tend to roll forever. Sometimes, all ya need is just the good ol' polyhedral set.

As a DM, I hate when players bring these bespoke random number generators for all the reasons you mention. Give them (and me) a small dice cup with clearly marked plastic dice. That’s all we need.
