Handsome, clever, and rich, Emma Woodhouse is a restless queen bee without rivals in her sleepy little town. In this glittering satire of social class and the pain of growing up, Emma must adventure through misguided matches and romantic missteps to find the love that has been there all along.
Directed by Autumn de Wilde. Written by Eleanor Catton. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, Bill Nighy, Mia Goth, Miranda Hart, Josh O’Connor, Callum Turner, Rupert Graves, Gemma Whelan, Amber Anderson, Tanya Reynolds, and Connor Swindells.

I've actually heard an argument how viewers like it when they know what will happen in the movie so a lot of trailers are spoiler-y on purpose.
now I don't know if this is actually true for I don't like spoilers at all but with such classic book adaptations it'd be a different thing anyway as most of us know the plot already.

Such a modern ADHD Trailer (rapid images, intense music, and no plot shared to see if I would even want to see the movie)... because there is no information of the story line in the actual trailer. Those who do not know Miss Austin's work, were given nothing in this trailer, such lousy marketing. The old trailer with Gwyneth Paltrow, SPELLS the story line out VERY CLEARLY - to chose if you want to see the movie or not. That is what trailers ARE FOR: th-cam.com/video/Jz_P43jHN6w/w-d-xo.html

@@Dani_1012 It's a novel by British novelist Jane Austen, written in 1815. Austen is probably most famous for Pride and Prejudice, perhaps you've seen adaptations of that one. All the Jane Austen books are classics and have been adapted into films and shows many times. Before this Emma, its most famous adaptations were a 1996 movie with Gwyneth Paltrow, a 1996 ITV TV movie and a 2009 BBC TV mini series. The movie Clueless is also a loose modern adaptation of Emma.

I despised the Gweneth Paltrow version. She plays it so stilted. It was like she was concentrating on her accent over the acting. Definitely the Romala version is the best, followed by Kate Beckensdale. Kate's version needed a better Mr. Knightly.

    • @justme9818
      @justme9818 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

But the Romala version is so historically inaccurate! The characters didn't behave as they would have at the time AT ALL. They were completely without the basic propriety or manners that the time demanded. They were just too modern.
My response here isn't aimed at you or your comment personally. Everyone has the undeniable right to like what they like. What bothers me is that the film got made that way at all. I truly believe that one either has to interpret Austen in context or adapt it entirely.
Any director who fails to do this destroys the integrity of the characters. -The audience can't appreciate the nuances of the story, the subtexts or the conflicts within each character at all if their behaviour is completely out of line with societal restrictions at the time. If a director wants to modernise the interpretation then it has to be put in a modern setting.
Gwyneth has Shakespearean training - she hardly needed to concentrate on her accent. Her portrayal was far more reserved but this was in line with the level of formality people lived in at that time. If Romala wanted to give his characters more freedom he should have moved the entire piece forwards in history. He should have set it in a time where it was socially acceptable to behave the way his characters did instead of at a time when it would have been shocking and vulgar behaviour that no one at all would have respected, even the most open minded.
It bothers me so much that modern interpretations rewrite history this way. It's like turning the novel into a comic strip.

Oh, please say they're not going to make Emma into a farce, because that's the "vibe" this trailer is giving me... And who exactly is supposed to go shirtless in this? -- Not Mr. Knightley, surely! (It might be okay, though, if it's just one of Emma's fantasies.)

Ikr! I absolutely adored Romola as Emma. Unfortunately Not a lot of ppl are familiar with that version but it’s by far my most favorite. Romola’s expressions and emotions are intense in Emma. I can’t imagine any other adaptation. Although the costumes look nice in this new one. And of course I’ll probably see it too but I’ll always be comparing the BBC Romola version with this one.

I saw Emma and Persuasion last night on Netflix.
The first one was amazing with good actors, very true to the book and this era.
The second one was an absolute nightmare : this is not the Anne from the book, it looked like she came from 2020. And why is she talking to the viewers ? This was annoying as hell. Wentworth has no charisma. It looked like Bridgerton and not Jane Austen at all, with Black and Asian people everywhere. I'm sorry but this is not the Regency.
Anyway, I loved Emma but hated Persuasion.

Jane Austen is undoubtedly applauding at this irreverent, offbeat, insouciant portrayal of one of her romantic tales around the rules of British aristocracy - it's just as she was intentionally doing at the time but in the perfect tone for OUR times. adore. can't wait to see.
