    I live in Arizona too. I freeze water in a water bottle and place it on the carotid artery in my neck and/or the femoral artery in side my thighs (a Big Gulp works good here especially in the car). By cooling these main arteries, the cooled blood gets circulated, and thus the whole body gets cool. (I slip a clean sock over the bottle to absorb condensation and to protect the skin on my neck from frost bite.) This also works for those neck wraps. I freeze them, but when I tie it around my neck I make sure that it's tight enough to be touching the carotid arteries. As an engineer, I'm surprised you didn't think of this one. (Actually, I discovered this method by analyzing the Big Gulp between the legs method, because my Dad's truck didn't have A/C nor a cup holder.) Stay Cool. xoxo

    Don't use ice cubes. Use frozen water bottles. Turn the fan on low. Keep the water bottles (1 to 3) close to you (about 2 ft.) and the fan further away (8 or 10 ft.). Keep spares in the freezer. Change as needed. Your not cooling the room. Your cooling you. You'll still be hot but you won't be dead.
    Edit: make sure the bottles are in a pan to catch condensation.

    Tried most of that in the past.. the ultimate best is the window fan... blow in when temp is below 75-78 and blow out when it's above 80.. works real good but when it's impact runs its course, you've got no other choice than to crank up the AC or put on frozen clothes.. My problem with the ice is it makes the room more humid

    Try sleeping on a hammock... it is much cooler than on a bed. Just make sure the hanging supports in your bedroom are strong enough to hold your weight. Also, for high humidity places, try using a dehumidifier. Even if the temperature doesn’t drop, sucking that moisture out of the air makes a world of difference. Btw, I hate when it’s hot and humid and I’m a spring, fall and winter lover ☺️

    Wish I had a better way as well. The mild-ish winters here in South Georgia save me money as I enjoy the cold. My electric bill usually hovers around the 50-60 dollar range, but the summers are brutal - made worse by horrible humidity that can make 76 feel like 86. To keep from hemmoraging money I raise the temperature when I’m not at home to around 78 degrees. Then I drop it a couple degrees when I get home and then drop it some more when the sun goes down so the unit doesn’t have to work as hard to keep cool. Doing this, I usually keep my bill under 100 dollars except on the hottest of months when it goes a little over. Ceiling fans are a must and are in every room of my house except the bathroom. The only other bit of advice is to just try and get your body to acclimate to a higher temperature. Right now I’m struggling because our weather is a bit bipolar and fluctuates madly as we head into spring. Cotton clothing and meal prepping or using a crockpot to reduce generating heat also helps some. Oh, and I’m not an engineer or mechanic but I’ve heard that keeping your AC unit in some shade helps as it allows it to draw in cooler air (not 100% sure as this could just be guessing) as well as having heat reflective paint on your roof. I don’t know why on earth black is still the preferred colored roofing tile down here. Just cooks the homes. My aunt swears by her attic fan as well.

    • @Sunny-jz3dy
      @Sunny-jz3dy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you need a dehumidifier! lol. You want to have fans higher for blowing the hot air out and other fans lower to bring the cooler air in! Having some type of tree or bush by your a/c unit helps! Blackout curtains or something like that to keep a lot of the heat Out during the day! You want to keep everything closed up ..windows..doors... etc. Try to cook outside instead of inside if you can! BBQ or use a smoker....you can get a small cooktop for outside that has 2 or 3 burners and propane tank. There are a lot of ways to make the heat more bearable! I dont have central air and until recently..I didn't even have a window unit! I had to get creative to stay cool enough so I could sleep! lol. Good Luck!

    night time.Use a mist sprayer to dampen a sheet on your bed, tun a fan on get under the sheet and the fan will evaporate the water taking your heat with it. I think this technique originates from Texas. you can have the fan plugged into timer socket and have the fan go on an off periodically through the night to economize

      Even more effective if you take advantage of the cooling chemical properties of peppermint. I mix a _sparing_ amount of peppermint oil (because a little goes a long way) with drinking/distilled water in a spray bottle. Not only does it elevate my mood because of the great scent, I feel a nice, tingly coolness.

    Fun video, and useful. I'm considering getting a few of those silver reflective windshield screens and putting some velcro strips on them so I can easily put them up on the windows that get the most blazing sun in the morning, and remove and fold them up when they're in shade. Seems like it'd help block more sun than the shades I've got and retain more of the coolness from the night. I do use the trick with the box fan, and have a portable AC. Just ordered a second one. Have I mentioned I hate the heat?

    First... leave home as soon as it seems a bit warm... turn on the AC in the car. Only visit or shop in air conditioned environments the ENTIRE day until you see that the temperature is dropping... then .. get home right before it cools off enough for the neighbors to turn off their AC .. you want to capture their last blasts of cool air leaking into the hallway. The hallway will be cool because the ac air was moving into the hallway... leave your apartment door open to allow the cool air to rush into your home. Then close the door. Repeat...

    I lived in a garage-type of building for a while, in Stockholm.
    The building was poorly insulated and had a black, flat, roofing.
    On really hot summer days i sprayed a layer of water, using the garden hose, on the roof. The rapid vaporization of the water on the roof cost energy and therefore reduces the temperature. Actually worked quite nicely.

      That's a really great idea! Come to think of it, my friend and I tried the same thing on the roof of my black car when we were driving through the desert without AC. Not sure it worked too well though as most of the water just blew off.

      I have done the later for years, with success. Here in Chicago it goes into the 90s and might not cool til 70 by 11 pm. Also we keep the shades and curtains closed almost all summer on the south side. When using a/c, we close upstairs vents days to maximize cooling 1st floor. At dinner, we open upstairs vents and close off half downstairs to focus cooling upstairs for nights.

    I have 3 years towards my BS in ME and can't stand the sight of blood. I couldn't even dissect the squid. But if you stop and think of the body as a huge hydraulic system, wouldn't the most prudent place to put a cooling system be on the two mainlines before they split off into the extremities or subsystems? I need to do some research but it makes a difference on which side of the body you put the frozen water bottle. I'm remembering that if you put the bottle on the left side of your neck, your head cools down first. And once my head is cool, my brain tells my body that it is comfortable. If you put the bottle on the right, your body cools and it takes the brain a lot longer to relax and feel comfortable. Try it and let me know what you think. xoxo

    As an Engineer in the past (now am a psychologist) I have seen lot of houses that do not have the old exausting system (like little slit openings or exhaust fans) at the end of the roof, where only heated up air is being stagnant in acute summer days! So,
    If a small 15 inch by 2 inch rectangular opening in each room can be made, all the heat will escape easily now and then by itself! (Yes! Small issues would be there from insects, that can be meshed up) That awareness is missing everywhere! Plus, you can do all these things said in the video and friends said in the comments too!

    So I try to use air as I can. Like for example opening 2 windows at a adjacent room. Or I try to close all currents in all rooms. Or sleep without any cushioning, but on floor aka futon bed. Another ways are to get active at night and sleep through out the day, summer hibernation to simplify it. For an idiots, rubbing a toothpaste on any skin surface (including a croch, armpits, behind the neck, and lower back) would help.

Maybe you can wrap it up a little with, say, using a fan in front of ice (I think you said that was a bad idea). So stay hydrated, got that. Is there is there any kind of invention like a matress coollant? I take my sleep seriously, so please do a review for me and others. I love summer, but if I don't get good sleep, I am a grouch. Use one of those ice bags with the lid that unscrews that you can get from a pharmacy that is used for bumps and bruises. Just dab it up and down your body and hold it to your forehead and your cheeks until you are cooled off. And when your not using it put it in the freezer or an ice chest. They keep ice for a long time. You can also eat ice cubes. I also love to take really cold showers in the summer time.

    Take advantage of a much larger and semi free heat pump called the earth. Maybe at scale this will cause some problems but being the middle of a desert, you can cool you space by running a heat pump in a subterranean loop. (basically cooling to ground water temp 365 days a year)

    You need a larger fan.I use fan that are at least two feet wide.Also you need to go to the lowest ground in your houses apartments room and open all the windows. This is not safe to do in America especially in big cities where they don't have gun control. If you have a nice clean basement you should go there because heat rises.I rented on a nice clean basement once and it was always so cool there that we didn't even need a fan.

    What about filling balloons with water and freeze them? This is how I would replace the ice cubes to get rid of the water.

    • @chargeeverywhere
      @chargeeverywhere  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could do that. However, you'll still run into the issue of using more energy to freeze the ice than you get (in cooling energy) by melting the ice. If you didn't have AC though it might be a good idea. You could just hang them all over the house and re-freeze them as they melted.

    The best way to cool efficiently is to use a air cooler, Iam not sure what its called in the USA. The concept is the you trickle water over a porous surface like hay or cardboard fines and put a fan infront of it. Here the water evaporates and doing so reduces the temperature of the air which is blown by the fan into the room. There is water pump which keeps the water flowing over the hay/cardboard fins. Total power used might be around 100Wats for a nice big cooler for a room. The catch is this only works in places where its hot but humidity is low, if the humidity is high then the water doesnt evaporate and the cooling effect is greatly reduced. Also you can add ice to reduce the water temperature to improve cooling. Eg th-cam.com/video/m3PxzQwVOyo/w-d-xo.html

      Swamp cooler?

    • @sherrellzittingfavorites5309
      @sherrellzittingfavorites5309 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but not in a casing. It's to pre-cool the air (thus the name he used: "air cooler". If I read it right, it's not a box, just water and a porous material.
      .

    • @sherrellzittingfavorites5309
      @sherrellzittingfavorites5309 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What, put a bail of hay by the door, use a tap hose to infuse it with water, and a fan to blow that shit in your face? The hay bail is the cooling unit, the "box", without a box like swamp coolers have.
      .
