Why wipe the body with a rag at the factory, if dealers who sell these cars can do it all? Some kind of senseless procedure that increases the cost of the product, for which the buyer is eventually forced to pay..
They're wiping off any contaminants on the surface so that they can spot any imperfections in the paint or bodywork the straight white lights overhead help highlight these faults which at this time needs the human eye and touch to detect, A machine may lack the sophistication yet required to complete this task autonomously.

His car was more than likely a pre built car or a BMW press car. Check the number plate, if it starts with Y it’s more than likely a BMW press car
