I understand that this was originally played on electric and won't have the same feel if I play it on acoustic. But I only have acoustic and am having a lot of trouble (strain and whatnot) with maintaining the intro chord shapes. Is there any way I can improve on this?
Red Espiritu keep practicing till it gets old and repetitive. thats when you know you have it when your brain is ready to move on to something new it going to feel repetitive. repetition work brotha keep telling yourself that . practice makes perfect.

Hopefully you got it worked out now! For others, it is something that gets easier with practice. You could try basic finger exercises to warm up. If the steel strings are digging into you, you could try nylon strings while you are still practicing the chord shapes.

If you're gonna do video lesson start with a play through always!😡 advanced learners can pick it up swiftly then and everyone benefits from a refresher to (re) familiarize themselves. You also get to see the teachers skill set and whether or not it's worth your time learning their interpretation of the song.
Everyone has a right to their own system , i understand your point but also keep in mind these are free lessons and they do take time and resource to make them, so i would at this point shout "first world problems" and suggest u just skip ahead to portions where he plays through the whole segment unfettered. Just sayin
