I just want to take a minute to say Good Job! Your narration style and voice really draws you in, I've been on a binge of your content recently and i've noticed with each video your confidence and narration style improve. It's detailed, straight to the point and entertaining! Honestly, I don't know why you don't have more subscribers.
Legit same, been binging these for a few days. It’s this guy who’s now making me consider an apprenticeship at Cunard, so thanks bro, helping my future 👊🏻
My personal list: 1. RMS Titanic 2. SS Normandie 4. RMS Queen Mary 4. RMS Lusitania 5. RMS Aquitania 6. RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 7. RMS Empress of Ireland 8. SS Andrea Doria 9. SS Vaterland/Leviathan 10. RMS Oceanic (1899)
In my opinion, the Olympic Class sisters and Normandie were the most beautiful, elegant, and luxurious ocean liners - it’s a shame that most of them met such tragic ends. The United States was technically the most impressive in terms of engineering and outright speed and it is still with us to this day, albeit in a very deteriorated condition. (I still have hope that it will be restored to its former glory someday!) I would also have to include the smaller, but heroic, Carpathia as my favorite one funnel ship.
I've unfortunately never had the chance to be on a real Ocean Liner, but I did get to watch the Queen Mary 2 when it passed by my city during its anniversary run. absolutely beautiful, haunting to see such a vessel running among the more "modern" looking craft. she did pass by again in April this year but we had just started lockdown and police were looking for any excuse to be brutal during that time, so couldn't risk it. it's shame because she apparently docked here unlike prior where she only passed. I wonder if we will ever get ocean liners running normal in the future, I understand the cost etc but it would be a wonderful thing to have again.
I haven't been on an ocean liner either, unfortunately. I did get to see the United States in Philadelphia last summer, but I hope to see the handful of other preserved liners and to travel on QM2 at some point.
My only experience on an ocean liner was a visit to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA back in the 80s. I'd love to cross the Atlantic in a ship like that.
The Great Big Move united stated is bound not to sail again eventually it will sink into the harbour when a pipe bursts or the draft closes in on itself well collapses
My list is: 1: Olympic (1911) 2: Normandie 3: Mauretania 4: Majestic 5: Imperator EDIT to include 6-10 6: Homeric, she's underrated 7: Carpathia, the little liner that could 8: Queen Mary, helped get the industry through dark times 9: Aquitania, the Ship Beautiful indeed 10: Britannic (Olympic-class), her potential as a liner was incredible
the Olympic must be my favorite, not the Titanic. The Titanic had a very short lived carreer where the Olympic had a long and succesfull carreer, surviving a collision, surving WW1 and sinking a U-boat that planned on attacking her
I could never put my finger on it but I think you nailed what I like so much about the old ocean liners. The knife edge bow as you eloquently put it. I love how the sharp bows literally slice through the water. Great video.
1.SS Normandie 2.Olympic class ocean liners 3.SS United States 4.SS France/Norway 5.RMS Queen Mary/ Queen Elizabeth 6.QE2 7.SS Bremen/Europa 8.Rms Lusitania/Mauritania 9. Ss Rex/Corte di Savoia 10.SS Raffaello/Michaelangelo
Well, mine would be: 1. SS Normandie - she is just too breathtakingly beautiful. For me, a machine of divine properties. 2. RMS Queen Elizabeth - The QE looked strong and yet, had a kind of welcoming aura. When comparing RMS Queen Mary to her and Normandie, feels like QM was born outdated.... 3. RMS Mauretania - A great combination of sleek early liners design and 4 funnels (with those slighty allocated to the front half) that really catches my eye. 4. RMS Queen Mary 2 - I just love the "modern ocean liner" rendition that Queen Mary 2 is and, being born long after the end of the great liners, it is the last string holding this legacy alive to our generation, so it kinda holds a natural beautiful aura. 5. RMS Titanic - I belive that the Olympic Class had the best design of the early superliners, and in regard to that, Titanic peaked among the other two. The gentle curve of the bridge is so strong and asthetic that I have a hard time trying to find Aquitania and Imperator's Class beautiful with their "flat faces"...
My top 10 ships: 1: SS Normandie 2: RMS Queen Mary 3: RMS Titanic 4: SS Bismarck/SS Majestic 5: RMS Mauretania 6: SS France/SS Norway 7: SS Europa/SS Liberte 8: SS Kaiser Wilhelm II 9: SS L'Atlantique 10: SS United States
Quarteon why? Why are they your favourites? Have you travelled on any of them? Visited them? Know stories of their history! Genuine question, as my favourites are the ships I personally know.
julie Wallis They are my favourite liners because I do happen to know what they look like, their down to their interiors and layout, and also their history. Now of course I haven't been to any of them because none of them longer exist (except for the RMS Queen Mary) but there are many videos, photographs, deck plans, even full websites dedicated to preserving the stories these liners.
gydg nghy Well, not really. I chose Normandie as the first because I really like how they designed her 1st class interior spaces, and especially her avant-garde decor. She was even more innovative than the QM almost in every way.
Olympic is my favorite by far. Her story is fascinating (and absolutely wild) plus she and her sisters were, in my opinion, quite possibly the most beautiful ships ever built.
My top favourites - 1. RMS TITANIC 2. SS NORMANDIE 3. MV BRITANNIC 4. RMS QE/QM 5. RMS AQUITANIA 6. RMS MAURETANIA 7. SS FRANCE III 8. SS UNITED STATES 9. SS BISMARCK 10. SS BREMEN
I respect that you weren't afraid to list the popular choice as #1 -- she's definitely my top choice too. For me personally, Titanic's story is part of the reason she's number 1. If it weren't Titanic, I never would've wanted to learn of other ocean liners. I'm sure she alone generated a ton of renewed interest in other ships.
My fav: 1. SS Normandie. 2. RMS Titanic. 3. SS Ile de France. 4. SS France/Norway 5. RMS Lusitania. 6. SS Imperator. 7. RMS Queen Elizabeth II 8. SS Atlantic. 9. SS Rex. 10. SS Bremen.
Good Video! Enjoyed the VLOG series, hope you do more. Would also be down for a live chat some time. By top 5: #1 - Titanic - Same reasons as video. What got me interested in ships, best overall Olympic Class. #2 - Normandie - So ahead of her time, so beautiful. Wish she got to live a longer, fulfilling life #3 - Oceanic - Just a huge step forward at the time, like koolaid man busting through to the 20th century #4 - Mauretania - Another huge step forward with her sister, there's just more info so I know more about the Maury #5 - United States - Sleek, modern, Art Deco, hauls ass
@@mattbots1 I keep my A/C cranking in my office where I record. Had to turn it off to record this video, though, and I admittedly was pretty toasty by the end.
I think I can only come up with a top 5. 1) SS United States 2) Normandie 3) SS France 4) Queen Elizabeth 5) Queen Mary I guess I like 'em big and fast :)
I'm with you. I might change the order a little, but those 5 are at the very peak of liner evolution. Though each is unique, they share in common great beauty, immense size and dizzying speed. It would be an honor and a privilege to make a Crossing on any of them. United States, the big-block muscle car of ocean liners, is decidedly the fastest, but France is the second fastest, having achieved over 35 knots on her trials.
@@Waiting_to_Exhale_era But she was a small twin screw ship, and slow. The SS United States was design by the same man and learning from SS America's flaws, created an engineering masterpiece .
I’m not a major fan of ships, but this channel is starting to make me fascinated with ships. I’m more of a trains and railroading guy, but this channel is slowly making me into ships.
The Great Big Move Amazing! To start, I’d recommend checking out Canadian and US Railroads first. The most powerful and best locomotives came from the USA and Canada.
My Top 10 1) SS United States 2) RMS Queen Mary 2 3) HMHS Britannic 4) RMS Queen Mary 5) SS Normandie 6) SS Bremen 7) RMS Majestic aka Bismarck 8) RMS Queen Elizabeth 9) SS Great Britain 10) SS Ile de France
My top 10: 1. RMS Olympic, Brittanic, and Titanic 2. MV Georgic 3. RMS Mauritania 4. RMS Adriatic 5. RMS Aquitania 6. SS America 7. SS Normandie 8. RMS Queen Mary 9. RMS Oceanic 10. RMS Queen Mary 2
Here is my top ten, I hope you enjoy :) 10. Oceanic II - I really love her design and she was a bridge between the late 1800s ship designs and the early 1900s ship designs. I really like the fact that she didn't have a sister ship because it makes her unique 9. Mauretania II - I have a soft spot for intermediate liners, not as big as a superliner but still elegant. I like her funnels and she has more of a cozy vibe to her 8. Queen Elizabeth - She has such a powerful presence and had a really clean look to her, she imo was the ultimate superliner 7. Britannic (1874) - The first Britannic took the proven design of the Oceanic Class and improved it, her and her sister were wonderful ships astheticly and I love her funnels 6. Britannic (1929) - The third and final Britannic was a really good looking ship, she looked very tough and utilitarian but still had a charm 5. Oceanic III - Although she was never finished, from looking at her concept pictures I believe she would be the best ship of that time and its a real shame she was never built 4. Titanic - BALANCE, that's what I see in Titanic. She was sleeker and more modern looking than the Olympic but not as modern as the Britannic, and was the perfect balance between the two designs 3. Baltic (1903) - I had a tough time choosing between her and the Adriatic but Baltic's story wins out. I love Baltic's design but also her personality, always there to give a helping hand 2. United States - United States was (and still is) a symbol for the USA, she was built in one of the USA's most impressive times inovation wise. She had a very sleek design and it would be a treat to travel on her 1. Caronia (1947) - The Caronia is my favorite liner of all time her color and design are perfect in my eyes and her sleek look was beautiful. I feel like she could go anywhere and do anything
I almost put the Baltic over the Oceanic, the Big Four were so instrumental in WSL's bottom line and so very successful for the time. The Adriatic was the largest and most luxurious but by it's launch it was just too overshadowed by the Lusitania. In the end though, I had to step it back to the Oceanic, I know not a Big Four, but was just such a huge step forward for the time and seems to have a lot in common with the Big Four.
The Great Big Move My problem with Olympic is the A deck promenade being open and the B deck one being enclosed, like if you are gonna do one, do the other
Hypergon Vids the Titanic didn’t have any enclosed first class promenade besides what was on A deck whereas the Olympic had like 2/3s of B deck enclosed for first class promenade space so it didn’t really need it. Though it does look much better with that enclosure on A deck.
Growing up in the 70's and 80's , I got ridiculed for loving ocean liners as opposed to sports. I still love them. It's so nice to see younger people still having an interest in them. I love the fact that we have an attractive young man carrying on their history. Great job!
@@the4tierbridge not a war hero like mary, and not even as famous as the mary and not even that famous outside us, even though ss united states was faster many travelers preffered to ride on the mary and mary carried even more passengers compared to her
I agree with the choice of Titanic. I know all those liners and the Olympic class just so happens to be the most beautiful, regardless of Titanic's story.
It's a little coincidental, but you're right that the Olympic class just happens to be exceptional. They were, in a way, the pinnacle of their own style of ocean liner.
Absolutely! The enclosed A-deck promenade so massively improved her looks over the Olympic, plus all the other improvements the Titanic got. The gantry davits ruin the look of the Britannic for me and the curved railings and loss of space for the organ ruin the forward grand staircase.
@@TheGreatBigMove I don’t have a Top 10, but my favorite is Britannic as an ocean liner. However, there is still something I don’t like about the Britannic as an ocean liner, the added railings above the bridge makes her look like she has a “big forehead”.
I like this video very much. Normandie ranks first on my list. SS France makes it as a close second. I also have a soft spot for the Queens and most German liners. But boy must Normandie have been a gorgeous sight to behold inside and out. Her propulsion was cutting edge, and her hull was mind boggling. Could you do a video on the French Lines ? Love your work.
@@I_am_a_cat_My term for Firefighters because of it being the most overrated glorified job in the world. What the public are lead to believe they do and what they actually do are worlds apart. As a former Firefighter I can say first hand it's not a brain job hence the sinking of the Normandie by being sank by Fire Hoses!
@@daveboydell2896 I mean obviously pointing a hose and spraying water isn't rocket science... but they still help people in need. A lot of them are volunteers... my brother was a volunteer firefighter because he wanted to HELP people. Just because some people accidentally sunk a ship long ago, that doesn't mean they're all "fakers" lmao. You sound like you have a grudge and bias. As someone who has had firefighters stop a house fire that would have been catastrophic to my life, I hope if your house ever catches on fire, you don't call the "firefakers" and just watch all the things you worked for burn away.
I wonder why the gantry styled davits of the "BRITANIC" (Olympic Class) was not continued on other ships. They reportedly functioned superbly during her evacuation, provided greater flexibility during severe lists for launching boats, permitted boats to be stacked and even boarded while still on deck then swung outward, were equipped with flood lights, and etc. Such a design, though unappealing to the ship's lines, seemed very efficient.
1. SS Normandie 2. RMS Queen Elizabeth 3. RMS Queen Mary 4. RMS Queen Mary 2 5. SS United States 6. RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 7. RMS Aquitania 8. SS Bremen 9. RMS Titanic 10. SS Imperator

Great choices and you provide wonderful rationale for your picks! I'm glad you have some intermediates and older liners - I personally am a huge fan of the non-express steamers. The post-war Saxonia class are a favorite, along with the Britannic and Georgic, "The Pretty Sisters," and Cunard's "A" class. I am a Titanic buff too, she is what started my whole ocean liner interest in 1983! And the Normandie - what a liner. Thanks for sharing your choices!
my personal list: number 10: Campania number 9: titanic number 8: Andrea doria number 7: Majestic number 6: Empress of Britain number 5: Rex number 4: Britannic number 3: Kaiser Wilhelm degrows number 2: Mauritania number 1 aka my fav: Carpathia l
Great video. I took your advice and made my own top 5 ocean liners. Also, like you, some are because I really like the looks and lay out and some are partly because of their story. These are in no particular order, I'd be fine with any being my number 1. 1- SS United States, 2- RMS Titanic, 3- RMS Queen Mary, 4- RMS Windsor Castle (1959), 5- RMS Lusitania. On the good days I would have liked to have been on any of those. Thank you for your amazing videos and keep them coming!!
1. Externally I'd go for Britannic but Titanic wins because of the same point you gave 2. Majestic 3. France (The first one) 4. Rex 5. Normandie 6. Georgic (Underrated ship) 7. Queen Mary (She was the 2nd ship I knew about outside of the Olympic class ships and started my interest in ocean liners) 8. America 9. Lusitania 10. Asama Maru (I kinda like her industrial look)
I watched this four months ago on the roku TH-cam which can’t comment on. Great video as always but technically there were 3 liners built in between QE2 and QM2. The Vistafjord was built for the transatlantic trade but never really did. Both Astor’s were built for the South Africa run. Also people forget that Cunard had two liners on the transatlantic trade in the 80s and early 90s. The Sagafjord filled in for the QE2 on occasion. Which would have been a treat since the NAL sisters brought luxury and style back to Cunard!
Maybe I'm influenced by her story, but I was happy you got the balls to take a predictable choice like Titanic. Her looks were absolutely beautiful and they would've been even if she hadn't sunk. I personally think her looks won over her sisters because of, ironically, her lack of lifeboats. Not saying that in any disrespect for the victims though
@@TheGreatBigMove could you tell me the reasons? I somewhat do like some places on the Mauritania becuase there are so many places on the Lusitania where it's pretty white (especially on first class). But I really do love Lusitania's dining saloon than Mauritania's.
Great Job for this presentation ! One of my cousins worked as a Long Shore man in the 1940's , 1950's and 1960's in New York City . He said that of all the the Ocean liners he had been on, that Normandie was Number 1 and France (1962 version) Number 2. Queen Mary 1, and Queen Elizabeth 1. were next. Everything about these ships had Style and Class, down to the Bell Hops. Thank You for this Presentation. I have been looking for a list like this for along time !
I like these videos. I think my list would be 1. United States. 2. Andrea Doria. 3. Empress of Ireland. 4. Lusitania. 5. Britannic. 6. Ile de France. 7. Carpathia. 8. Bremen 9. Queen Elizabeth 10. Canberra
Wow, I just got back in my childhood interest of the titanic/maritime ships in general, and this was the perfect channel I was looking for! Definitely gonna veer over to the starboard side and smash that red subscribe button!
My top ten are Queen Elizabeth 2 9 Atlantic 8 Aquitania 7 majestic 6 SS Normdie 5 Carpathia 4 oceanic2 3 Kaiser Willhelm der grocer 2 Mauritania 1 Titanic
1: SS NORMANDIE 2 : SS FRANCE 3 : SS ANDREA DORIA 4 : RMS LUCITANIA 5 : RMS OCEANIC 6 : SS UNITED STATES 7 : RMS CARPATHIA 8 : RMS MAURITANIA 9 : RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH (1930’s) 10 : SS AMERICA
The Andrea Doria was so innovative and striking when it came out in 1953. While docked in New York all the top interior designers and furniture buyers for the best stores came to visit. The murals in 4 of the public rooms (first and cabin class ballrooms and lounges) were gorgeous but so were other aspects of the decor: the rose pink chairs in the main dining room, the ceramic desk supports in the cabin class library, the crown shaped wall lights in the tourist dining room, the luxury suite that had a dressing room with quilted satin walls and a confetti-like carpet. So cool and so top of the line mid century. (The best mid century design was from Italy and Denmark)
I’m trying to figure out how I ended up watching your videos. But I’m loving them. I’ve learned more about ocean liners and cruise ships watching your videos than I ever did in school. I don’t know why, I find myself obsessed with White Star Line and Cunards liners. The style of the ships in the early 1900s into the 40s are my absolute favorite. I think modern day cruise ships are complete eye sores. These old liners, are just so beautiful. What ships should look like to me at least. I very much appreciate your videos. Not to mention for the first time in my life, I’ve looked up prices for tickets on Queen Mary 2 from New York to London. Surprisingly enough, I may actually do it some day. 😂
Normandie is that most sleek, majestic and enchanting ocean liner I have ever seen. Her fine, sleek lines and bow shape just casts a spell on u. Even thought her time came under unfortunate circumstance, she is the most beautiful ocean liner of all time.🚢👑😊😍
If somebody were trying to design the most iconic of ocean liners both inside and out they could do worse than come up with a ship like Normandie. She was an incredible piece of engineering and decorating, and it is heartbreaking to realize that she never even lived a full decade nor ever turned a profit for her owners.
My favorite ocean liners are 1: qe2 2:Lusitania 3:queen Mary 4: imperator 5: carpathia 6:queen Elizabeth 7: Andrea Doria 8:queen Victoria 9: oceanic 10: aquatania
I didn’t put titanic cause to me that ship is a bit overwhelming when your keep seeing on ever ship video I mean like how can you like titanic is the wilhelm gusttlof (idk how to speel it) had 9,000 deaths plus on the princess sophia nobody survived which me me think that titanic is a bit stupidly overpopuler. (I still can spell
I'd have to say that my favorites are Lusitania and Titanic, but the video was really good, I have recently learned of the Atlantic and the story behind her.
The list was terrific including many of the smaller liners I lacked knowledge about. Normandy is the one I would love to have traveled on. The elaborate grand couture of a marvel of engineering and art. But I wish we could have seen the grand plan of the three gorgeous Olympic class ships come to fruition.
Olympic - its story is pretty amazing. I liked this format and makes me think I should do one for my channel. I am approaching 500 videos and this might be a nice way to look back. Thanks for the idea.
I have the same feelings with your choice of Titanic. Most people would think that choice is unoriginal but for me it really think it is the coolest ocean liner because of the classy and timeless interior it has (along with the Olympic class ships in general). I loved how each room in first class had a theme to it like it didn’t just reflect the British but other countries as well (Turkish baths, palace of Versailles theme in first class lounge etc). I think the only thing I would have changed on the titanic was the pool. If they had done a Roman pool house aesthetic similar to the Normandie that would have been awesome. Awesome video. I enjoying watching your content.
Great video and list. I learned something new: Atlantic! Oceanic! Your list also brought to mind some of my (more modern) favorites: Conte di Sovoia, Leonardo da Vinci, France, and the ultimate for me: Normandie.
my list is 1. RMS Brittanic as she would have been. 2. SS Leviathan 3. RMS Titanic 4. SS America 5. RMS Lusitania 6. RMS Queen Mary. 7. SS Britannic (1874) 8. RMS Mauretania 2. 9. RMS Mauretania. 10.RMS Queen Elizabeth.
If we’re basing our choices on design purely my #1 choice would be the Oceanic II of 1899. Basing it off of design, story and everything else is Titanic. It’s such an iconic story that will probably never be forgotten to history. I also have a soft spot for Normandie, I love the Art Deco interiors, I don’t find them over the top or ugly. I also like Queen Mary and Great Eastern as well as Teutonic of 1889.
If we’re talking purely about exterior aesthetics, then my favorite is probably the Olympic. Particularly in her 1911 layout. I just find that her fully open A deck, and her longer B deck promenade, give her a more symmetrical and more open feel if that makes sense. And I also just find her career so fascinating. She was the true bad ass of World War I.
I too prefer the old ocean liners, beautiful ships, each with its own personality. Today's ships (apart from the queen mary 2) are simple square boxes, to hold as many people as possible. However, the Italian "michelangelo" and "Raffaello" were also beautiful ships.
Great list! I am relieved you didn't chose Queen Mary as your favorite, sigh of relief that you didn't because she's still here, as is SSUS. 1. CGT Normandie 2. RMS Titanic 3. SS United States 4. RMS Teutonic 5. Homeric 6. Leviathan 7. RMS Empress Britain 8. Queen Elizabeth 9. SS Cristoforo Colombo 10 Queen Mary 2
Great video with interesting and uncommon information. I enjoyed hearing about some of the less publicized liners featured in your top 10 and the reasons for choosing as you did. While it was disappointing not to find the original Queen Mary in first place, I can well understand your choosing Normandie and Titanic. While the Normandie was visually stunning, the feeling aboard the Queen Mary is one of unrivalled contentment.
My list: 1: United States 2: Aquitania 3: Queen Mary 4: Adriatic 5: Lusitania 6:Oceanic (1899) I really like the Normandie as everyone does but the only thing I do not like her is because of the funnel in the back because it wasnt used for the same purpose of the others (there is not always steam coming out) so thats why i did not add her to my list. Btw great vid! I enjoyed it. Could you maybe do a video about the Big Four? I honestly love almost all ocean liners.
Check out the s.s Monterey. One of the most forgotten ocean liner of all time. As I could rarely find info on it. I know it existed because my grandfather was on it. Sadly he didn't get a souvenir from it.(money problems) Also helping was wikipedia being the only website that has info of it. (Sadly very few pictures of it could be found) So explore it when possible.
@@coolman6139 ya, its the RMS Connaught 1 (you can find her and her sisters mentioned under the Dublin city packet steamer company wiki). I found some old and obscure websites tho but still so little is known. Her sisters are Ulster, Munster, and Leinster all built in 1860, and apparently Connaught was the first ship to reach 18 knots and held it for some decades, all between 315-350 ft long, all were 4 funnel paddle steamers and got reduced to 2 in the 1880s and scrapped in the mid to late 1890s. So I guess there's some info but I'm not sure how much of it is true because these websites are like, from the 90s. I saw some mention of them in the Dublin library but I live in California
Pauline? Trivago. The one i found( the one that didn’t sink) The only info i could see was that it sailed in 1860,scrapped in 1890 and one held blue ribbon. Everything else is a mystery. Btw the post of it was from 2009 Link:www.papermodelers.com/forum/design-threads/2829-here-comes-irish-mail-rms-connaught-1860-a.html
I stayed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach when Disney was running it. You kind of got the feeling you were boarding the day before a trip. Walk around checking everything out, enjoy dinner. It was sweet. The cabin was classic. The cabin door still had a threshold to step over upon entry/exit. Love the old ocean liners 😎. Great video.
It's true that the Titanic is seen as "too popular" because of her story, but she also deserves credit for having been a gorgeous ship. That's why she's also my favorite along with Britannic.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that it is just a coincidence that Titanic is among the most beautiful ocean liners ever built and also happens to be the most famous for a totally different reason.
Harland and Wolf long considered the Olympic class liners as among their finest work. She and her sisters were indeed beautiful ships. As John Maxtone Graham said (when referring to Olympic), "she was in one breathtaking ship the last of the lean yacht like racers and the first of the floating palaces." They neatly avoided the grotesque Brunhilda like ponderousness of the Imperator and her sisters and managed to avoid some of the cluttered upper deck issues of Mauretania and Aquitania.
great video. It seems you really like White Star and Cunard, as do I. Don't know if you've ever looked further afield into other lines such as P&O. Orient, Union Castle or Canadian Pacific as they all had interesting liners. Orients Oriana stands out as does P&O's Canberra, the 4 Straths and the Jubilee series from the 1890's. Honestly I don't know if I could pare my list down to just 10. I think a top 20 at a minimum for me. I think most of the ones you mentioned would probably make my list and I'd probably put Titanic as my no 1 too. Not because of the sinking but mainly because she was beautiful, elegant and incredibly nostalgic to a bygone era and finally because without her fascinating story I never would have sparked an interest in Ocean liners at all. So thanks for the nostalgia trip and keep up the great video content
I did look at ships from other companies but, for the most part, I find Cunard and White Star to have had the best looking ships during the era of ships I like best (1890-1920). That said, this is just a subjective list of my favorite ocean liners and it would probably be different if I redid it even today.
Here are some things you mentioned I want to address and a following list of the ocean liners I consider the greatest. 3:36 QE2’s interior was made for the late 60s and 1970s modernistic style. Even though it broke from tradition in many ways, the design worked at first. Over the years they tried to update it with new more classical-looking furniture and fittings. But the thing is, the futuristic 60s design was infused into the very design/layout of the ships interior, and it did not blend well at all with the updated furniture and fittings they put in it. 4:22 Aquitanias exterior _was_ beautiful. I don’t understand why people think otherwise. Is it the boxy forward superstructure? If so, why? That was the trend at the time. It had been the trend for a number of years and it can be seen in the beloved Olympic class, the Imperator class and more. The only ships at the time that really broke from this trend were the Lusitania/Mauretania. 5:00 I mean no offense, but why is it always an offense in need of apology for one to say they think a certain ocean liners interior and exterior to be better than the Olympic class? The Olympic class was no where near the be-all-end-all of shipbuilding and was not an all too extraordinary milestone in ocean liner history, besides the Titanic disaster. It is as if people are so hung up on the romanticism surrounding the Titanic (and in turn its sister ships) that they fail to see the beauty and technological achievements of other ocean liners in an objective light. I agree that Lusitania _and_ it’s sister Mauretania to be the first true superliners. They were the most impressive liners of the Edwardian era, a huge leap in liner history and an achievement for Britain and Cunard. 5:57 I don’t understand how Lusitania’s interiors were more unique than the Mauretania’s? They were unique amongst themselves. Both offered distinct styles that made them benefit one another. I personally prefer Mauretania because I feel that many of her rooms had more detail and richness than did her sister. I also prefer her exterior over Lusitania. I think that her forward superstructure had a more appealing shape, I like her white skylights and vents over the brown ones of Lusitania, the overhang of her A deck promenade and boat deck, and more. Now here is my list of what I believe to be the greatest ocean liners of all time, in order: 1. *SS United States* 2. *Normandie* 3. *SS Great Britain* 4. *SS Great Eastern* 5. *Lusitania/Mauretania* 6. *Oceanic class 1870* 7. *Queen Mary* 8. *Queen Elizabeth* 9. *Kaiser class* 10. *Bremen/Europa* My personal favorite liners, not necessarily the best: - SS United States - Lusitania/Mauretania - Aquitania - SS Great Eastern - Queen Elizabeth - Queen Mary - And not necessarily the ship, but the _story_ of Titanic.
Thanks for the detailed, thoughtful response. I'll respond to a couple of these: - I do like Aquitania's exterior, but I wouldn't describe it as beautiful. It may have been the trend at the time (although I would argue that forward superstructure was never intended to look the way it ended up), but that doesn't really make it any more or less beautiful. - The reason I 'apologized' for liking Aquitania's interior is because Aquitania was the primary contemporary and rival of Olympic, so it makes sense to compare the two. - When I said Lusitania's interiors were more unique, I meant that I think they were more unique among Cunard ships at the time. But this stance isn't a hill I'm going to die on.
The Great Big Move I thought you apologized about the Aquitania/Olympic comment because you’d think you would have a mob of 12 year old Titanic fanatics roasting you in the comments lol. But I bet you would have if you hadn’t apologized lol.
On pure aesthetics, I'm going to put in a word for the original CP Empress class with the yacht like lines. As a second pick that someone will argue about, being a cargo liner, I actually have a soft spot for the double superstructure on RMS Magdalena.

Great video & analysis. I’ve been a fan of ocean liners since I was child & it still continues to this day. My top 5 are: 1. Olympic/Titanic 2. Queen Mary 3. Queen Elizabeth 2 4. Aquitania 5. Queen Mary 2 Keep up the good work. 👍🏻
For me: 10. Carpathia 9. Oceanic 8. Majestic 7. Mauretania (1938) 6. Queen Elizabeth 5. France (1961) 4. Normandie 3. Aquitania 2. Queen Mary 1. Olympic Keep on the good work! Love your vídeos.
I personally like Titanic as my favorite ocean liner in general because of her exterior looks the enclose promenade deck make her look cleaner than Olympics' open space and as well as he said: more private promenade's and newer suits. Britannic was beautiful as well but there are some features of why i don't like Britannic's design which would be the giant lifeboat davits on each side of the boat deck and i kind of personally don't like her enclose stern deck area. In terms of Britannic's interiors she already win first place than Titanic but since she was never converted into her ocean liner role Titanic wins first place for me Before i close out my comment some interior features i like on Britannic would be the addition of a children's play room and her upgraded version of the swimming pool wit the green marbles makes her look more cleaner in the inside, The grand stair case is really beautiful with the "Welte Philharmonic Organ" installed on the aft of the staircase which is a huge upgrade to her design but i agree on the fact that the balcony is closed which i don't like either. Olympic was the first and the basic of the class which is understandable her interiors were nice another thing i didn't like on the Olympic was her her 1913 refit when the whole boat deck is covered with lifeboats i do understand it was to improve safety after Titanic's loss but the rails that separated the boats just gave her a clean look too honestly in general the Olympic class liners are one of the most beautiful built ocean liners in history
My favourite is really between Titanic and Olympic. But given their very different careers, I gave them their own titles which reflects how I feel about them. I also like the Queen Mary and the majority of what they planned for Britannic if she had entered service as an ocean liner. The Aquitania and Mauretania are on there because they were great ships too. So my list is as follows: 1. RMS Titanic (my special ship) 2. RMS Olympic (my favourite ship) 3. RMS Queen Mary/RMS Britannic 4. RMS Aquitania 5. RMS Mauretania I couldn't decide which out of the Queen Mary and Britannic should occupy third place, so I decided to put them as joint third. And as you can see, given the Titanic is so well known for his tragic maiden voyage, it has the slightly superior position of special ship, over the Olympic. But the Olympic is still very much my favourite.

Seldom do we see posts about one of the most elegant, unusual and beautiful liners, the ss Michelangelo.

3: Mauretania
4: Majestic
5: Imperator

6: Homeric, she's underrated
7: Carpathia, the little liner that could
8: Queen Mary, helped get the industry through dark times
9: Aquitania, the Ship Beautiful indeed
10: Britannic (Olympic-class), her potential as a liner was incredible
Britannic 3?
Damn that's many of your favorite ships
I never liked the extra deck on the stern of the Britannic and the huge lifeboat davits. Olympic and Titanic were much better looking.
Very fitting regarding the Carpathia.
the Olympic must be my favorite, not the Titanic.

Well, mine would be:
Definitely agree about the flat bridge of Aquitania.
Aquitania had a curved bridge screen, but it was hard to see that curvature, unless she was seen from a broadside view.
@@cunard61 , and it's recently been discovered Titanic's navigation bridge also had a very slight curvature at the outermost windows.

Now of course I haven't been to any of them because none of them longer exist (except for the RMS Queen Mary) but there are many videos, photographs, deck plans, even full websites dedicated to preserving the stories these liners.
Titanic
gydg nghy Well, not really. I chose Normandie as the first because I really like how they designed her 1st class interior spaces, and especially her avant-garde decor. She was even more innovative than the QM almost in every way.

My favorite is the SS America 🇺🇸
@@Waiting_to_Exhale_era But she was a small twin screw ship, and slow. The SS United States was design by the same man and learning from SS America's flaws, created an engineering masterpiece .

8. RMS Queen Mary
9. RMS Oceanic
10. RMS Queen Mary 2
Here is my top ten, I hope you enjoy :)
10. Oceanic II - I really love her design and she was a bridge between the late 1800s ship designs and the early 1900s ship designs. I really like the fact that she didn't have a sister ship because it makes her unique
9. Mauretania II - I have a soft spot for intermediate liners, not as big as a superliner but still elegant. I like her funnels and she has more of a cozy vibe to her
8. Queen Elizabeth - She has such a powerful presence and had a really clean look to her, she imo was the ultimate superliner
7. Britannic (1874) - The first Britannic took the proven design of the Oceanic Class and improved it, her and her sister were wonderful ships astheticly and I love her funnels
6. Britannic (1929) - The third and final Britannic was a really good looking ship, she looked very tough and utilitarian but still had a charm
5. Oceanic III - Although she was never finished, from looking at her concept pictures I believe she would be the best ship of that time and its a real shame she was never built
4. Titanic - BALANCE, that's what I see in Titanic. She was sleeker and more modern looking than the Olympic but not as modern as the Britannic, and was the perfect balance between the two designs
3. Baltic (1903) - I had a tough time choosing between her and the Adriatic but Baltic's story wins out. I love Baltic's design but also her personality, always there to give a helping hand
2. United States - United States was (and still is) a symbol for the USA, she was built in one of the USA's most impressive times inovation wise. She had a very sleek design and it would be a treat to travel on her
1. Caronia (1947) - The Caronia is my favorite liner of all time her color and design are perfect in my eyes and her sleek look was beautiful. I feel like she could go anywhere and do anything
Completely agree with your rationale for your #4 and I wanted to get Caronia onto my list but I couldn't make it work personally. Thanks for sharing!
The trouble with Titanic being balanced is that she ended up as a bloody seesaw.

I wonder why the gantry styled davits of the "BRITANIC" (Olympic Class) was not continued on other ships.
1. SS United States 2. SS Normandie 3. RMS Olympic 4. RMS Oceanic 5. Queen Mary 2
I like these videos. I think my list would be 1. United States. 2. Andrea Doria. 3. Empress of Ireland. 4. Lusitania. 5. Britannic. 6. Ile de France. 7. Carpathia. 8. Bremen 9. Queen Elizabeth 10. Canberra

The first is from 1870 and the second is from 1899
@@Kapitan_Creeper most likely 1899.
My top 10 favorite ocean liners are:

2. SS United States [1952]
3. SS Normandie [1935]
4. RMS Carpathia [1904]
5. RMS Lusitania [1907]

My favorite ocean liners are
1: qe2
2:Lusitania
3:queen Mary
4: imperator
5: carpathia
6:queen Elizabeth
7: Andrea Doria
8:queen Victoria
9: oceanic

I didn’t put titanic cause to me that ship is a bit overwhelming when your keep seeing on ever ship video I mean like how can you like titanic is the wilhelm gusttlof (idk how to speel it) had 9,000 deaths plus on the princess sophia nobody survived which me me think that titanic is a bit stupidly overpopuler. You know the Videos Gonna Be Good When it’s Titled “Top 10 Ocean Liners” !
Thanks for the idea.
i agree Olympic as well the story is so good considering what happened to its sisters
My fav ocean liner is United States I think she is so beautiful I really want her to be saved
Her stainless steel lifeboats really added to her appearance. A lot a ships can not make that claim .
Great video and list. I learned something new: Atlantic! Oceanic! Your list also brought to mind some of my (more modern) favorites: Conte di Sovoia, Leonardo da Vinci, France, and the ultimate for me: Normandie.
my list is
1. RMS Brittanic as she would have been.
2. SS Leviathan
3. RMS Titanic
4. SS America

Great vlog! I truly enjoyed this. New subscriber
Loved the new style!
My choices are:
1). Queen Mary
2). Queen Mary
3). Queen Mary
4). Queen Mary
5). Queen Mary
and so on ad infinitum.
I too prefer the old ocean liners, beautiful ships, each with its own personality. Today's ships (apart from the queen mary 2) are simple square boxes, to hold as many people as possible. However, the Italian "michelangelo" and "Raffaello" were also beautiful ships.
I love these vlog type videos! Keep up the good work!
If other people like them too then I'll start making them more often
Great list! I am relieved you didn't chose Queen Mary as your favorite, sigh of relief that you didn't because she's still here, as is SSUS.
1. CGT Normandie
2. RMS Titanic
3. SS United States
4. RMS Teutonic
5. Homeric
6. Leviathan
7. RMS Empress Britain
8. Queen Elizabeth
9. SS Cristoforo Colombo
10 Queen Mary 2
I'll put ss united states as no 8, never really famous outside america

Great video with interesting and uncommon information. I enjoyed hearing about some of the less publicized liners featured in your top 10 and the reasons for choosing as you did. While it was disappointing not to find the original Queen Mary in first place, I can well understand your choosing Normandie and Titanic. While the Normandie was visually stunning, the feeling aboard the Queen Mary is one of unrivalled contentment.
Now this is my kind of top-tens video.
My list:
1: United States
2: Aquitania
3: Queen Mary
4: Adriatic
5: Lusitania
6:Oceanic (1899)
I really like the Normandie as everyone does but the only thing I do not like her is because of the funnel in the back because it wasnt used for the same purpose of the others (there is not always steam coming out) so thats why i did not add her to my list.
Btw great vid! I enjoyed it. Could you maybe do a video about the Big Four? I honestly love almost all ocean liners.
Thanks for sharing! I will most likely a do a video on WSL's Big Four.

One of the most forgotten ocean liner of all time.
As I could rarely find info on it.
I know it existed because my grandfather was on it. Sadly he didn't get a souvenir from it.(money problems)
Also helping was wikipedia being the only website that has info of it. (Sadly very few pictures of it could be found)
So explore it when possible.
One of my favorite ships doesn't even have a Wikipedia on it and her sister ships so I feel your pain on little info
Pauline? Trivago. Damn
Do you at least remember the name
@@coolman6139 it also doesn't help when there was another paddle steamer built in 1860 named Connaught that sunk
Pauline? Trivago. The one i found( the one that didn’t sink)
The only info i could see was that it sailed in 1860,scrapped in 1890 and one held blue ribbon.
Everything else is a mystery.
Btw the post of it was from 2009

Now here is my list of what I believe to be the greatest ocean liners of all time, in order:
1. *SS United States*
2. *Normandie*
3. *SS Great Britain*
4. *SS Great Eastern*
5. *Lusitania/Mauretania*
6. *Oceanic class 1870*
7. *Queen Mary*
8. *Queen Elizabeth*
9. *Kaiser class*
10. *Bremen/Europa*
My personal favorite liners, not necessarily the best:
- SS United States
- Lusitania/Mauretania
- Aquitania
- SS Great Eastern
- Queen Elizabeth
- Queen Mary
- And not necessarily the ship, but the _story_ of Titanic.
Thanks for the detailed, thoughtful response. I'll respond to a couple of these:
- I do like Aquitania's exterior, but I wouldn't describe it as beautiful.
The Great Big Move
I thought you apologized about the Aquitania/Olympic comment because you’d think you would have a mob of 12 year old Titanic fanatics roasting you in the comments lol.
I really like seeing liners that put conventional aesthetics aside and do something unique (Magdalena included).
Oh no not another one of those Watch Mojo Vids. Oh, wait a minute this is by the Great Big Move, his vids are always better than those money machine channels. Amazing work Charlie. :)

In terms of Britannic's interiors she already win first place than Titanic but since she was never converted into her ocean liner role Titanic wins first place for me
Before i close out my comment some interior features i like on Britannic would be the addition of a children's play room and her upgraded version of the swimming pool wit the green marbles makes her look more cleaner in the inside, The grand stair case is really beautiful with the "Welte Philharmonic Organ" installed on the aft of the staircase which is a huge upgrade to her design but i agree on the fact that the balcony is closed which i don't like either.
Olympic was the first and the basic of the class which is understandable her interiors were nice another thing i didn't like on the Olympic was her her 1913 refit when the whole boat deck is covered with lifeboats i do understand it was to improve safety after Titanic's loss but the rails that separated the boats just gave her a clean look too honestly
in general the Olympic class liners are one of the most beautiful built ocean liners in history
Got to be SS Normandie- Nantais till I die
My most favorite is the Queen Mary 2.
Just another modern cruise ship.
So my list is as follows:
1. RMS Titanic (my special ship)
2. RMS Olympic (my favourite ship)
3. RMS Queen Mary/RMS Britannic
4. RMS Aquitania
5. RMS Mauretania
I couldn't decide which out of the Queen Mary and Britannic should occupy third place, so I decided to put them as joint third. And as you can see, given the Titanic is so well known for his tragic maiden voyage, it has the slightly superior position of special ship, over the Olympic. But the Olympic is still very much my favourite.
My favorite has to be Britannic on because I love her hospital ship livery and her looks
