  • Cost of living in Portugal - In this video, we will break down our cost of living in the Algarve Portugal for May and June in 2022. This is typically a time of year when you see the pricing start to jump up for the summer season. Did we still find that this area was an affordable place to live? We will share with you all our monthly expenses from Rent, Groceries, and Entertainment, as well as some medical and dental expenses. We spent two months in the Algarve, exploring from the east to the west coast, one month in Lagos, and another in Cabanas de Tavira. Each city offered something a bit different and we will break down the cost differences for each location.

    Thanks for a great video, something I was wondering as it seems like you are targeting around 30K a year in cost, if you were to double that, what would you change in how you are spending time in the countries you visit (like your rent a car comment in this video - maybe a future video idea)? Keep enjoying your awesome life and thanks for the videos.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question Greg! We would do three things differently.
      First, rent a car. Just an example of what we do quite often.
      Tomorrow we will be going on a day trip here in Brasov, Romania to Peles Castle. The castle is about an hour away by train and we will walk the mile to the train station from our Airbnb.
      Second, we would not stay a month at a time in each location. Our Airbnb costs drop dramatically for a month-long stay but by week three we are ready to go. We will be moving around a bit more in the next two months.
      Third, we would eat out more and do more paid excursions. Food is a part of travel that we should be taking advantage of. We will be now in Romania where it is more affordable. We are looking forward to SouthEast Asia in January for this reason alone!!
      Thank you for the video idea!! It's a good one so stay tuned!😀

    Super helpful video. For your visit to the dentist did you use your Cigna Global insurance or just walk in off the street? Also, do you have other insurance for when you are in the US or is Cigna your only insurance.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Karen. Our Cigna Global does not cover our dental so we just walked in off the street so those prices were full price out of pocket. Cigna Globel covers us for 21 days at a time and 60 days maximum a year in the US. Cigna does have a plan that will allow you to stay longer. We will be adding that to our coverage this next calendar year starting in September. Thank you for watching!

    Nice video. Could you give more info on the inputs you use for your health insurance quotes? I'm getting a quote about double what you guys are getting. Sorry if you already talk about this in another video.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Your age, location, plan tier, and add-ons will very much affect your quote. We are both 51 & 52 and choose the silver plan. We originally had a $1500.00 deductible with $0 cost share but this year we decided to add on US coverage. this increased our premium, so to help balance the costs we adjusted our deductible a bit to $3000 but kept the $0 cost share. Hope that helps! Cheers 🍻

    Everything in Portugal is affordable (eating out, grocery, lots of free entertainment - beautiful beaches, free entrance for museum on Sunday for Lisbon residence, gym or sports, health care), except the accommodation.
    Also you have to consider for locals, it's not that affordable as the average salary in Portugal is very low.

    Hi Brain and Carrie,
    Nice to see you both on video again. Thank you for touching on the question of prescription supplies. On the subject of public transportation, do you prefer bus over train since the bus is more reliable? Do you use a prepaid card or cash? Do you need to prepare the right amount of cash? In terms of phone plan for international use, I found T-mobile US plan covers quite a lot daily needs with no extra charge, including discount for age 55+, free Data & texting abroad, and Netflix. Hope this helps.

    Don't rent a car, just take Ubers, they are everywhere. They are only $5 for a trip across any of the towns, and much cheaper than taxis. Even between adjacent towns they are only $20. I was there at the same time and could find no car rentals under $80 a day. Trains and busses are all easy to use also. I don't know how they got those cheap accommodations, especially that time of year. The typical price for an "entire apartment" Airbnb is $80 in Lagos in June/July.

    • @BrianandCarrie

      Renting a car would be much easier to travel longer distances and explore other areas besides the coastal towns. We just couldn't afford it at this point of our travels. Our rental for June tripled in price for the months of July and August. We mentioned that in the video. Thank you for watching.
