Hope you enjoy the video! We didn't actually plan to film this one- we had another one prepared (which you'll see next week) but some of the places we planned to shoot were blocked by protests during vote-counting in Parliament. So Jaspar suggested this as an alternative, and I thought it was a great idea- and a really cool experience to actually get to explore campus and eat with the students. This is a long way of saying that it might be a bit more "lighthearted" than a lot of our usual stuff but I very much hope you enjoy the video.
Locations are pretty much all either on campus or just outside the north gate. If you need specific directions to anything, just leave a comment!
Thanks as always for watching and a ton of gratitude to those who are supporting OTR on Patreon- it's what makes this all possible.

100% it's something I'd like to revisit with a bit more prep time (as noted in the pinned comment, this was very much spur-of-the-moment). I really, really like the food street at Chulalongkorn and would love to dive into that in some depth, as well as visit a few more places as well. There's some really interesting ones I've heard about that I'll try to sort out access for filming sometime down the road

In comparing US cafeterias to those in Thailand, a significant contrast lies in their operational structures. In the US, most cafeterias are outsourced to major corporations like Aramark, RA, etc. Meanwhile, in Thailand, each cafeteria typically hosts numerous independent contractors. This distinction leads to a remarkable variation in flavors found in Thai cafeterias, as diverse vendors craft unique dishes using different ingredients. On the other hand, in my Aramark-managed cafeteria in the US, the same people using the same ingredients creating different dishes resulted in flavors that closely resembled one another.

Ramkhamhaeng University (RU) is the second mass market university in Thailand after Thammasat University which admits unlimited students without entrance exam. It was established in 1971 on the farm land which used to host international expo on Bangkok’s perimeter in those days. I attended this expo when I was a high school student and it took more than one hour by bus to get there. On the way, there were rice fields on both sides of a 2-lane road. The expo site was a lonely building amid the rice field!
Thammasat university was the second oldest university after Chulalongkorn university. It was established by Prime Minister Pridi Bhanomyong shortly before WWII who wanted to open tertiary education to the public without entrance exam. However after WWII, the junta coup leader decided to change mass market Thammasat to closed university in 1952 with entrance exam admission like Chulalongkorn. Even though more public universities in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen and Songkhla were opened, they were/are closed universities, requiring entrance exam admission.
However with rising number of high school graduates, more than half could not get admitted to public universities and could not afford tuition at private universities, the government then decided in 1971 to establish a mass market university on the former land and buildings which hosted international expo. The university was named Ramkhamhaeng to honor King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai dynasty who was believed to invent Thai alphabets. The concept of mass market university is unlimited access with no entrance exam and students are not required to attend the lecture (lectures are held as usual but seats are limited to hall capacity). Basic texts and tuition fees are very cheap, the cheapest in Thailand even cheaper than Sukhothai Open University which was established later which does not hold daily lectures; students learn from books and online.

    • @ThePeteBkk
      @ThePeteBkk ปีที่แล้ว +3

My father was one of the organizers of the said expo. He and his boss would paddle in a canoe, as the land was a flooded rice field, to mark out the area needed for the expo. When the expo was finished and area repurposed as Ramkhamhaeng U., the Ministry of Commerce, who ran the expo, retained a small strip of land for its offices. Later these offices were turned over to the university around the early 70’s.

No, Mahidol is as it has 2 famous medical schools Siriraj (the oldest medical training school in Thailand) and Rama. There are 3 famous Bangkok medical schools namely Chula, Siriraj and Rama. Imagine a university with 2 famous medical schools! Mahidol is also famous for its science/mathematics programs apart from medical schools. Thammasat is famous for its social science programs. Even though over the years, the university also diversifies offering engineering and medical training, it is still regarded as second best in both fields.

Leaving Khao Lak I skipped breakfast taxied down to HKT and flew to BKK, took the airport rail link to Phayathai BTS, exited down to Florida Hotel and ate at the Tampa Cafe. It was very good. It felt like I had left Thailand and was back in the States.
I was the only farang there and was shocked how many Thais were there enjoying bbq ribs and rolls for lunch. Like I had said in previous post I have walked past this hotel for 30 years and never knew the Tampa was there. It will now be a regular lunch stop when in BKK. Thanks

Despite having 100,000s student, not all of them are on Ram U. campus at the same time as they could be taking distance learning as well.
Another interesting fact, most of the top-scoring bar exam takers come from Ram’s Law School, not the more prestigious Chula or Thammasart. It is said that with Ram, it’s easy to get in but very hard to get out (graduate).

RU provides the international program for foreigners and it is the one independent university which students can handle own schedules and have much more flexibility to enroll along with their comfortable times each of persons including being able to work and study at the same time.
You can try on eating at the humanities faculty ‘s cafeteria which there is only the one Thai noodle shop. I love dropping off here after class because there are less students. Another reason is that I am quite lazy to walk a distance to get some foods at Noppamas cafeteria and there are overcrowded there in lunchtime so I dislike to get there.

So What I usually did back then, if I didn't go back home on the weekends ( we were allowed to go home on the weekends), was to visit friends at Ramkhamhang university. They lived near the campus. They would take me to the restaurants nearby, most of them were southern food which I love. Btw, I am from northern part of Thailand. Oh, it's a good and fun time. This brings back so many college memories, I guess old guys like us might never truly understand Black Pink haha. Great videos, such a unique in-depth analysis always, and should be joining the protesters to see what they are raging about?

Funny that I've been eating food from Ramkamheang university cafeteria for the last few months. My husband and I retired early after a windfall. Then he decided to enroll at Ramkamheang to study some humanities subjects that he has always been interested in. He found the food from the cafeteria to be really cheap and very good, so he always bought some food home for us.
According to him, there are many outsiders coming to eat at the cafeteria everyday. Apart from the Muslim students from the south, there are now a sizable number of muslim students from Africa as well.

I've been to this area multiple times, mainly to play table tennis near the stadium and to get food at the excellent night market. The night market has a lot of halal food, since the area has a lot of muslim residents. I wasn't aware the university was that big (I've always been there in the late evenings) nor have I been on campus (I wonder if you can just walk in and go to the cafeteria). I'll bet there are a number of halal stalls at the cafeteria, too - perhaps I should check it out next time I go to Bangkok. Can't wait for the MRT Orange Line to open (maybe in 2025), it'll be a lot easier to get there. In the past it's either been the boat taxi on the canal or a city bus.

Everyone can go in. The boat from Pratu Nam is cheap and takes like 15 minutes to Mahadthai. It has been easy and cheap to go there ever since. Only in the evening when the boat stops running, it's a long bus ride. Airport link also has a Ramkhamhaeng station. From the the bus ride is way shorter.

Maybe after watching the Coldplay concert next year, I can try the taste of the campus food. And I just found out that the university is the biggest, maybe not the biggest but the widest area. Correct me if I'm wrong! 🙏

It is the biggest in term of student population, but far from biggest in term of land areas. Most regional universities have bigger land area as land is much cheaper there in those days.

Great vid Jaspar on the incredible variety and choice available in this Thai student cafeteria ; every day is a school day; I am glad that I'm not the only old guy on the block and and the challenge is for us all is to stay relevant and current; not easy when youngsters don't want to join you for a meal; we have much to teach the up coming 21st C millennials but who wants to listen to gain something from an oldie with a wealth of painfully won experience?

Foreign TH-camrs have a reputation for misinforming through "Thai Secret" or "Like a Local" types of clickbait videos that I like to watch and laugh at their ignorance. You surprised me with the accuracy, the authenticity of information and sources, and most importantly, your apparent love for Thai food culture.

Do you believe me, I spent 6 years studying at this university (studying, working). I can count the times I used to eat at the cafeteria., Because most of them will come to university when I have an exam. Having an open university that doesn't care about attending, While still spending most of the time working to earn money to pay for tuition. It's very good.
