Leslie, so sorry to hear about your Montana 5th wheel, that's rough. If we were to buy a used RV, we would definitely hire an RV inspector. We might even hire one if we bought a new RV again. We believe an RV inspector is worth the investment.
@@LetsTurnItUpWorld how do you find the RV Inspector? I’ve never heard of it. “We would buy from a local dealer that has an excellent reputation for service” Based on reviews, I haven’t found one dealership that has even a halfway decent reputation for service…let alone excellent…both locally or nationally! If anyone out there can point me to one in the Pacific Northwest, please do. Failing that, I am willing to travel across the country. Thank you!
All quality advice, when I bought my minivan for fulltime living. I did my research on what was the best minivan to buy, test drove it, took it to a mechanic for an inspections. I also had a emergency fund, which a couple years later came in handy. Now I'm trying to replenish my emergency fund. You all give such fantastic advice.
Weeeeeelllllllll I hope we made the right choice. We just purchased a brand new 2022 Dutchman Kodiak Cub travel trailer. It took a loooooong time to finally make a decision lol. It's actually overwhelming not knowing what works best for us. The 2 of you have been very instrumental in helping us with this decision. Thanks for the info👍🏾
Shoot! I’ve been camping out of my small sedan and a tent for years. Been researching small teardrop trailers recently. A-frames are a no-go, I can’t set them up solo (went to a dealer and tried and failed spectacularly in raising the roof). My criteria is that it MUST be easy to setup, and garage storable (won’t pay for offsite storage, and I have no place to store it at home other than the garage with my HOA). My biggest hang-up right now is the astronomical interest rates for 20 years unless I pay for the whole thing up front cash, not to mention car/truck/SUV prices & interest rates these days (I need a vehicle that can tow a trailer, and my sedan won’t do it).
DEFINITELY do not buy cheap. We did and found out the corner bed was way too short for Richard to even think about sleeping on. Back in 2006 we bought a 2007 for about 12,000. A lot of issues like smaller tanks, conveniences, amenities not there. And the weight was about the same as our new larger one. Can't assume more $ is better either. Just have to figure out what you HAVE to have, and the safe weight limits that keep driving more pleasant and not scary and not fingers crossed going up or down a hill. But check out sturdiness and really some things may be more important to one than another. A Gold miner might want more outer storage or heavier duty areas, or even a toy hauler for equipment not ATV's and bikes- and people who LOVE to cook camping might like more counter and a harder core AC to keep cool. Bathroom size- are you going to be squished trying to use the toilet, does it even matter to you, is a smaller shower adequate or is a long shower a must with a hookup?
Thank you for a great and informative video. A few weeks ago I took ownership of my RV after waiting 2.9 years. Worth the wait. I agree with all your points! Thanks again.

Hi , I think what you said about it being your home not just a vehicle. Made a lot of sense to me . I will probably never own a camper van or an RV in my lifetime, but it sure has been fun watching your videos and adventures in “Desert Snow “ 💕

Thank you I wrote down all the suggestions and bonus ones. I'm looking to buy an RV in one year when I relocate, a friend suggested to purchase where I settle, and you confirm that there is two good reasons why. Love your videos thank you so much
Great video and many of the things you brought up are the reason why I'll be buying a brand new Toyota Hiace tradies van.. those things are designed to go forever and at 51 there's a good chance it will still be in good shape in 20/30 years lol. Also I have zero mechanical skill so don't want to " save money " by buying cheaper 2nd hand one.. Also planning on getting all the extended warranties and services offered... May I be complaining in years to come how much of a waste of money all that was because I never needed them 😊.. Plan is to buy brand new van with no initial fit out ( empty shell) live in it and gradually add what I need as I learn by doing.. Mind you I've lived in caves so am quite comfy long term in what many would call primitive conditions lol..
There might be one thing you missed on what to consider when purchasing an RV, Is there space available at your destination? From now until October, if you're not boondocking, all reserved campsites and RV resorts are booked.. National parks are over flowing, most of the time you're going to wait hours just to get into the park, So what I'm saying is, once you purchase your RV don't plan to use it until next year,
Regarding where you purchase...is anywhere really "local" if you live in an RV full time and travel? Just wondering, if you have a break down while on a trip, can you get service anywhere or do you need to be towed back to where you purchased it?
Thanks for watching Gracie! Good point about local, but many of us have home bases in a sense, areas where we camp regularly. If you do break down on the road, you can get service at many places. For us, Winnebago has a network of service providers across the country that we first look up.
@@LetsTurnItUpWorld - unfortunately, most service centers are swamped and booked months in advance. I’ve heard far too many horror stories about owners being flat turned away from service centers unless they purchased the vehicle at that location. That plus half the items not being fixed when they pick up their rig.
Camper vans are nice for short trips and trips to areas where are other RVs can't go to. Unless you buy a van which can tow a trailer or willing to understand the limits, don't buy one.
My personal experience is that you dont need all the frills. Vans get greasy if you fry, or even cook often. It's impossible to stop it. Grease travels in steam, and coats everything. Fabrics absorb the oils, and smell. It's a nasty experience to lay on the cushions in cold weather, and they feel greasy, and cold. Dust is ever present, and is very good at getting into cracks between objects. Showers, and toilets, while a really nice luxury, are only used every so often. Personally I think they waste valuable space, better used for storage. I used a five gallon paint bucket that I had cleaned, and I would set in the sun for a couple hours. It got toasty warm. Dump some water on myself, soap up, and dump more for rinsing. Takes about half of the 5 gallons total, and five minutes to feel fresh again. A portable camp toilet works even better than a cramped built-in toilet, and can be folded up to store away. You find that a pretty, new, expensive factory set-up will deteriorate much more quickly than you expect. Little accidents are inevitable in the van life. Plastic breaks easily after heat cycles start taking a toll. Fake wood peels, scratches easily, and shows age quicker than you realize. Put your money into power generation. Solar, or gas powered portable generators. I installed a home window AC unit powered by a small Ryobi generator that could provide a clean sine-wave for delicate electronic components. I had no problem living in that van and doing construction work for a living, while me and my wolfdog were living large. One of the best times of my life. Cheyenne loved it too. She always made loads of friends, at the jobsites, and at the Flying J where we often stayed on work nights. Even the local Police loved her, as they often drove through doing rounds. I miss those carefree days. Just my personal experience. If you're sprnding too much time cleaning, and moving items to get to other items, it gets old quick.
Some great advice but my suggestion is DON’T BUY ONE! They are built fast and cheap. We have had a few campers over the years. Every one of them had problems. Our 2020 Winnebago travel trailer has major water issues. When they installed the pass through hatches they didn’t seal them! Are you kidding me! I removed the hatches and reinstalled them using ProFlex around the flanges. I will never buy another RV. My next one will be a cargo trailer that I will convert myself.
As far as buying from a reputable dealer, I’m not sure they exist. The reviews are abysmal on every dealer selling new Class Bs I’ve researched. Every….single….one! If anyone knows of a reputable dealer, please pass along their name.
