What I am trying to find out is how does one make the "inside" of certain text transparent - such as the letter R. Lets say I type the letter "D", then go to Type > Create Outlines. So now what do I need to do to make the "inside" (the hole) in the letter D transparent?

If you type any text, all the “inside spaces” are transparent by default. You can check it by pressing down the Ctrl + Shift + D keys on your keyboard to show the transparency grid.

Yes it is! To fill in the hole use the "Shape Builder Tool"
