It could also have something to do with Mitch getting part ownership and being run like a separate location trying to profit off of the name. I've seen major national brands close down locations due to unprofitability, so I doubt a small local chain would be any different.
The one Grasshopper on Route-23, in West Milford, NJ. Mitch is there. Idk if he owns it now, but you can see him there throughout the week, he seems friendly. Food is okay. Beer is usually decent.
I actually know someone with a pronounced developmental disability who “runs” a food truck that is really a family business, but Mike has wanted to own his own restaurant his whole life, so his folks made it happen, along with some complicated funding benefits from SSA. But Mike works his tushie off, is great with customers, & uses his talents 110%! Mom and dad may do the books, inventory, & supervise/help cook, but Mike is a very successful Front of House kinda guy and while he is not a traditional entrepreneur, he makes it work.

I know restaurants come and go such is the nature of the industry, but anyone else find it comical the next few establishments that succeeded The Grasshopper were increasingly terrible until the location's most recent incarnation as Segovia Meson?
Here's the thing about restaurants...THEY'RE HARD TO KEEP PROFITABLE. So many elements working against restaurant owner/operators. Poor kitchen staff skills, poor wait staff skills, poor accounting skills, poor menu, poor cleaning staff, customers stealing, staff stealing, management stealing, etc, etc, etc...One thing I've learned, watching episodes of Kitchen Nightmares, the ones who don't change with the times, fail. About 80% of the show's featured businesses have shuttered their doors. In this case, The Grasshopper was huge and unwieldly for the inexperienced staff. That head chef shouldn't have been hired in the first place. Alowing garbage to be served to their customers. Mitch needed some business skills. A refresher course at a local college would have given him some inspiration. The father daughter team too. I mean, $3 million dollars, in 2009 goes a loooong way. They dove into a business too large too soon.
I hate how everyone single out mitch as either the main good guy or the main problem. Everyone is terrible at their job just as Mitch is terrible at his. That restaurant is ran by fuckups.
I felt bad for Mitch in this episode. I just don't think running a restaurant or a kitchen was truly his thing. If Chief was supposed to be there as a mentor, he wasn't really teaching him. In fairness to the Shepard’s pie a lot of homemade Shepards pie is made with beef in Ireland,because mince lamb isn’t as affordable or readily available as beef lol So I’d say they were fairly authentic with it haha

A) maybe they are shepherds who love their sheep so they eat beef ;) B) it’s legit here, if authentic UK-Gaelic food is on offer, but for the most part, Americans no longer enjoy lamb & it is crazy expensive; I live in sheep ranch country and even we eat cottage pie (we have even more cows) and call it shepherds. Maybe in Idaho they care, but they’re basque shepherds, they eat really really good food. Seriously stop harassing American restaurants over this, if it clearly says beef on the menu, it’s fine - shepherd’s pie is clearly the common term in the US, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard another British person mention cottage pie. Yeah, Sports bars are mostly dogshit if we're being honest. Not saying there aren't ones that buck the trend, but more often than not, if you're looking for quality food at a Sports bar, you're missing the point. They're really just there to sell drinks and show the games. Food is usually an afterthought. That said though, again, it's not always the case, but as was shown after the grasshopper left the location... Yeah, go to a real restaurant if you want proper food.
I felt sorry for Mitch here. Yes he was useless but you could tell it was all just too much for him. I don't think the show wanted to set him up as the fall guy, but he just couldn't redeem himself at the end.

Famous authors like Jane Grigson, Martha Steward and Mark Hix have used Shepherd's pie to mean beef. The The Practice of Cookery and Pastry from 1849 says it is sliced meat of any kind topped with potatoes and baked.

Shepherd's pie is made with lamb. When you use beef it is properly called a Cottage Pie.

3 million investment that's an insane investment amount for a restaurant. Surely you could get significant and less risky returns elsewhere?
