Coronary artery disease (CAD), also known as coronary heart disease, occurs when the coronary arteries become too narrow or when cholesterol buildup forms in the walls. The coronary arteries are the blood vessels that supply the heart with oxygen and blood. If these arteries narrow, the heart may not receive enough oxygen-rich blood, especially when exercising. A clot can occasionally obstruct blood flow, causing serious health issues.
CAD can sometimes lead to a heart attack.
You may experience a variety of symptoms if your heart does not receive enough arterial blood. The most common symptom of CAD is angina (chest discomfort). Some people describe their discomfort as follows:
Chest pain
Heaviness
Tightness
Burning
Squeezing
These symptoms can also be mistaken for heartburn or indigestion. Other symptoms of CAD include: pain in the arms or shoulders, shortness of breath, sweating and dizziness
There is no treatment for CAD. There are, however, ways for a person to manage the condition.
Treatment for Coronary Artery Disease typically entails making positive lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, adopting a healthy diet, and engaging in regular exercise. Medications may also be prescribed by doctors to slow the progression of CAD. However, some people may need to undergo medical procedures.
If a person's symptoms are not responding to medications, surgical procedures can be used to open or replace blocked arteries.
