    Keeping it simple has been so key for me. We live/camp in Colorado, so being able to reliably cook over a campfire is not a thing. For so long I had recipes for 1 pot, foil packets, Dutch oven, grilling, etc. and all those options were just overwhelming when it came time to plan food. Now I ONLY plan foods that can be cooked in my cast iron pan OR my camp pots. As someone who doesn't enjoy the cooking part of camping, removing all those options has made it more enjoyable.

    Hello. I love your channel. You have great tips and suggestions. I'm not new to camping. I'm 64 and have been camping since I was a baby with my family. But your never too old or never too experience to listen to good advice. I watched your video that talked about storing your food and picking the right campsite and being aware of your surroundings. But all the years that I've been camping I'm still occasionally picked the wrong site. A few years ago I picked a site with a nice tree for shade during the summer. Only to realize later that evening after retiring that it was a black walnut tree. And for anybody out there who doesn't know what a black walnut tree is or how big the walnuts actually are should definitely check before pitching a tent under them. Walnuts don't fall off a tree those little tiny brown round things like you find in a bowl of nuts on a table. Black walnuts are actually inside a great big green shell bigger than an avocado. And if they fall on you or your tent is not fun. So I had to move my tent in the dark. Also about keeping your food stored so that animals won't get into it, you should let everybody out there know the raccoons are very smart. And they can get into rubber tubs even the kind with the the snaps closures on the handles or the little latches on them, raccoons can get into those and they will and like you said even while you're sitting right next to it. So keep your food inside the rubber or plastic tubs and keep the tubs where the raccoons can't get to them like in the car.

    I practice my cast iron cooking at home on my stone patio using two metal oil-change pans - one pan for my coals and cast iron Dutch oven and the other pan for extra coals heating up in chimney.

    Two camping trip planned this month! Can't wait to get my outside on! 🌲⛺ Love cooking outside. For me one of the fun parts is the meal planning. Nothing like going out for a good hike and coming back to camp and making a nice meal. 🥘🔪⛰

    Amanda, your tips are always so welcome! Love your content! Thank you! I just want to add a cheap tablecloth and disinfecting cleaner are amazing additions if there will be tables at the campsite or if you bring your own folding table to camp. Just remember to keep them far enough away from your cooktop or bbq. These make it so easy to clean after prepping/cooking meals cuz you never know what the last campers or critters may have left behind. It’s also a good reminder to not leave any leftover food/snacks out because they could bring in a colony of squirrels or other critters during the night. I know this from experience! All of our snacks were gone after night 1. 😔

    • @amanda.outside
      @amanda.outside  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those critters are seriously quick sometimes! Love the idea of a tablecloth. Sometimes those camp tables can be pretty dirty!

    • @FionaAnne1
      @FionaAnne1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I second the table cloth suggestion! Nice to have something to put over dirty campsite picnic tables, and a waterproof one can be draped over your stuff in an unexpected downpour. I also like a small hand broom + dustpan for brushing stuff like pine needles off of tables and out of tents.

    • @amanda.outside
      @amanda.outside  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are a lot of really dark sky areas here in Utah! We have binoculars, and one day really want to get a nice telescope. We used to go to 'star parties' where people would gather and bring their telescopes and set them up for others to look through. It was a lot of fun. I saw Saturn's rings clearly at one of those star parties. It's such a special thing to see a dark sky full of stars. I just love it!
