  • Transgender athletes may take part in the Olympic Games for the first time. But allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sport is provoking a heated debate about inclusion and fairness.

    In sport, women and men categories weren't created because they felt different. It's because they are physically different. It's as if a boxing superweight said he should compete in the lightweight category because he feels lighter

    No one in their right mind thinks a biological male should be permitted to compete as a women. This isn't 'controversial', it's patently absurd.

      You do realize that MTF trans people take estrogen? The amount of it they take makes them much closer to women than men when it comes to athletic ability.

    • @asn9337
      @asn9337 4 ปีที่แล้ว +505

      @@danielmay7266 taking oestrogen means nothing! no amount of oral or injected oestrogen will undo the organizational effects of androgens during puberty. on average, individuals who have gone through puberty as males will have height, strength, speed on their side.
      I support people embracing their own unique sexuality but this insistence on competing in female events after a mtf transition has nothing to do with an individual being allowed their own private life.

      The problem here is that the people who keep saying that MtF women who have undergone a year of testosterone suppression still retain a significant competitive advantage don't actually have any evidence to support their claim outside of "lol I'm just right". This lack of evidence is exactly why the IOC hasn't changed their rules in the past couple years despite how much it's been talked about.

      And to put into context they make up the smallest proportion of athletes. I think one crucial element with the Olympics is that an athlete who gets gold recieves up to several 100 k from his respective country. Every country has a different scheme, most are lower, but it still is a significant sum for an amateur. Now I'm not saying this is the main reason or in fact any reason for the people involved. I dont think anyone would undergo gendertreatment for the money. But it is an incentive for them to get recognized in normal Olympics since separate transgender Olympics would be like Paralympics. Little to no financial gain.

      @@laurenkelley1171 the cyclist in the video says that Dutch women are taller and that is an advantage. Why isn't there a Dutch women category in competition? Nonsense, we say, it's not important enough to make that a category. And therefore, we are assigning a value judgement. Extending this logic, if we don't make a category exception for physically stronger dutch women, then it's inconsistent to make exceptions for women in general on the basis of physical differences. Perhaps you could say its consistent because only weaker groups get their own categories (e.g. no controversy with transmen competing with men), but even here it's not ALL weaker groups. Save for boxing, weaker men don't get their own categories. Trans women then say their exclusion is based on gender, not physical differences.

      Tyler Knight If I’m understanding you correctly, you say that a Dutch-woman-only category would be necessary to give weaker woman an equal opportunity. The only problem is that height is not always necessarily an advantage. Just because a Dutch woman is taller it doesn’t mean they are faster or stronger than another woman.
      But when it comes to any competitive sport in the olympics, things like bone density, amount of muscle and lung size certainly do matter.
      Men are biologically stronger not just because of their height, but greatly because of these factors. Which is why there is a separate category for both men and women.

These athletes take estrogen and progesterone which significantly drop muscle mass and make it harder to gain muscle. Basically they are on the same level as cis women. Of course that only applies to trans people on HRT. There should be regulation and testing for testosterone levels but all in all its unfair to exclude athletes from sport when science tells us that they don't have a biological advantage

      Scientific fact is that
      1) A trans woman on HRT is significantly weaker than a cis man, forcing them to compete with cis men would put them at a disadvantage because hormones make them a lot weaker than the average male. Its not fair for trans women on hormones for over a year to be forced to compete with men.
      2) if you compare and study a woman who happens to be trans after she has has been on HRT for a year and a woman who happens be cis there's sometimes negligible to no difference between the competitive stats. Why would the Olympics approve trans women under these hormone conditions if it wasn't scientific for over a decade even?

      Your first point is correct but you miss out the part where its not fair to women for trans women to compete with women. However
      It’s a scientific fact that
      1) men have much bigger hearts, lungs, bone density, muscle mass NONE of which are going to change with a bit of oestrogen pumped into their body.
      2) There are no trans males suddenly smashing world record yet trans males are suddenly obliterating women’s records and their sport. Why is this? Its almost like their is a biological difference between male and female 🤪
      Having trans women compete with women will be the death of womens sports and all of their world records will be beaten. However, to me, having a trans only record/competition seems like exclusion. I don’t know what the right answer is, but for gods sake stop ignoring facts for the sake of being woke.

    • @danielmay7266
      @danielmay7266 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hawkins, it’s because transphobia. People undergoing gender transitions from male to female almost always take estrogen. Over time that decreases the amount of testosterone which puts them on a level playing field. Your position is mostly just a big misunderstanding. Also, I’m not very biased on this. I’m a non-binary track runner who was born male and runs with other males for simplicity, the challenge, and the fact I know everybody else who I’m running with.

    • @kuyaleinad4195
      @kuyaleinad4195 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Androgenic hormones like testosterone are very strong chemicals with great biological effects. Any spiked concentration would inevitably change your epigenetic makeup that would give you a strength or growth advantage. That’s why it’s been shown that males who’s taken anabolic steroids in the past even once are going to have more of a strength advantage than males who have not taken any steroids. Same logic would apply to transgender females as their past elevated testosterone gives a similar effect (testosterone is an anabolic steroid).
      So for this, I think they shouldn’t compete in female sports despite them going under testosterone suppression as their epigenetics has already given them an edge with strength. Likewise it wouldn’t be unfair to let them compete in male sports as they have been testosterone deficient for a long time.
      But I’m not sure how to handle this. I’m just acknowledging that it is a situation we can’t just keep the status quo on :/

    • @danielmay7266
      @danielmay7266 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Carl Quant , hormones kind of are the only things separating them. The chromosomes just indicate which hormone to introduce before birth (X goes first so for a little while all fetuses are female). Once puberty occurs, the differing hormone levels start truly distinguishing males from females. That show how hormones levels are what distinguish the two birth sexes?

    • @Naskinlahtaaja
      @Naskinlahtaaja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The reason why female and male athletes compete separately is that there is a plethora of evidence to suggest that males in general have a significant competitive advantage over females in most sports, and the reason why doping isn't allowed is that there is a plethora of evidence to suggest that it gives athletes a significant advantage. The difference with trans athletes is that MtF athletes have to undergo a year of testosterone suppression before they're allowed to compete with cis women, and there simply is no evidence to suggest that they retain a significant competitive advantage after that year of testosterone suppression.
