I saw this as "Great White" when it first came out before it was pulled from theaters . Before it became an infamous "so-bad-it's good" staple . One of the funniest movie theater experiences I ever had! The more tragic and serious the scenes were meant to be, the more the audience chuckled. When the mayor slaps his son, the place broke out in laughter.
I sometimes forget that these films were actually screened in cinemas and intended for regular audiences. It's easy to assume they were made to be riffed.
That’s why I had a hard time getting into movies like Sharknado. It was too self aware and trying to make the audience laugh, but they didn’t have the skill to do effective comedy. But when a movie takes itself very seriously, it’s easier to laugh at how absurd it is and then riff it/make your own comedy. That’s what makes a true cheesy, so-bad-that-it’s-good movie. They’re earnest, but fail (like Ed Wood’s films).
This movie's failure at the box office due to being pulled from theaters helped to bankrupt Film Ventures International, the same company that gave us the classic MST3K movies Cave Dwellers, Pod People, Space Travelers, and Master Ninja I & II. Just before the company folded, Film Ventures head Edward L. Montoro embezzled a million dollars from its accounts and disappeared. He was never seen again. Nobody knows if he's even still alive.
I think Mike, Kevin, and Bill are to be commended. The restraint necessary to refrain from any mention of Vic Morrow's fate, while watching a movie in which people die in a helicopter that was flying too low . . . Well done, men. Well done!

I've never met a rubber shark movie I didn't like and this one is just *chef's kiss* bellissima! Sharks taking down helicopters is the most ridiculous rubber shark movie trope that I never get sick of seeing.
It occurs to me that, from the shark's point of view, he's hit the jackpot. He snacks on a teenager, then the response is TONS of teenagers taking to the water to offer themselves as a buffet! Next, people start coming out to him with offerings of raw meat, and usually they throw themselves in (from his perspective) as dessert! 😂 This shark is like, "I must be their god!" Up until the moment of his death, this shark was living his best life, as a well-worshipped god. 🤣
Watching the comically bad "special effects" shots of the shark attacking things in this brings me back to one of my favorite riffs from Danger Death Ray: "Do go out there, you'll turn into a toy!"
I LOVE this riff!!! Play the Last Shark drinking game. Drink every time you see a mustachioed individual. But, don't really. You'd be dead of alcohol poisoning by the 30 minute mark.
Iron liver edition, sip every time there is an uncomfortably long crotch shot of denim shorts for the length of the shot. You will survive but hopefully prevent the retention of the memories of massive amount of uncomfortably long crotch shot of denim shorts.
this movie wasn't so cheap tbf..It also made a decent amount of money . All the effects and stunts are practical btw. I don't love it but i appreciate a movie like this 1000x more than a cheap cgi monstrosity like " ghost shark"

I started watching this earlier, got about 2/3 through then stepped away for a couple of hours to work on a project. Sitting here finishing it, the pacing and stepping away has me thinking, "DAMN this is a long f**king movie!" lol

I thought the silent underwater shots were a nice change of pace. But then again, I just finished watching Rollergator, with its wall-to-wall guitar noodling throughout the entire movie.
That was absolutely unreal. I was like: "okay, this scene had crummy jam music playing _the whole time,_ the one afterwards did too, and the NEXT did... my god..."

This movie has some rather intense car parking scenes. I've counted three so far, with the excitement just building. Young film makers should take note, this is how it's done.

I have seen this movie so many times and I still have no clue what the plan with the helicopter was. Were they somehow planning to airlift the shark out of the water? with that tiny little hand crank? Neither of the guys brought a gun, so they apparently weren't planning to shoot it. Regardless, RIP Bernie and that cute little helicopter model.

Funnily enough, in some countries like Japan, this movie was straight up released as Jaws 3 or Jaws Returns, same Jaws logo and everything. Footage from this movie would later be reused in the unofficial Jaws 5, Cruel Jaws, also made in Italy.

I have seen this movie so many times and I still have no clue what the plan with the helicopter was. Were they somehow planning to airlift the shark out of the water? with that tiny little hand crank? Neither of the guys brought a gun, so they apparently weren't planning to shoot it. Regardless, RIP Bernie and that cute little helicopter model.
The actor playing the TV director was in Escape 2000 on MST3K.
It's too bad this film doesn't have Henry Silva too.

I noticed that too and was sad there were no riffs about it.
I thought this might be a thriller like JAWS, but it was instead upsetting and horrifying, like JabberJaw.

Funnily enough, in some countries like Japan, this movie was straight up released as Jaws 3 or Jaws Returns, same Jaws logo and everything. Footage from this movie would later be reused in the unofficial Jaws 5, Cruel Jaws, also made in Italy.
