  • This Pale Morning Comparadun dry fly demonstrates a little different technique for the regular comparadun wing. This technique results in a slimmer abdomen and greater buoyancy. It's also an extremely effective pattern for a Heptagenia sulpherea dun.

Gosh, that trick with the tag of tying thread to split the tails is gold.

Picture perfect comparadun Barry! Comparaduns and Haystacks were the first dries I tied before I figured out the hackle "game". I'll be tying them like you did here... or at least try too ;o) Thanks!

Nice variant. As always, excellent timing. I'm heading west into PMD and Sally hatches if I can find water.

Yesterday there was a pmd emergence on my home water. Trout rising to eat mayflies everywhere. It was a nightmare because I was only getting stupid fish to hit my flies. I used duns, cripples, soft hackles fished in the film and I even got desperate and tried spinner patterns. The trout were definitely taking the mayflies once they were on the surface or right under it at least. For whatever reason, the mayflies were slow to take off from the water, with their squiggly tails. A lot of them were having trouble breaking the surface tension if the water and getting their bodies “unstuck”. What would you have tried in that scenario?

Thanks Barry! I find comparands difficult to tie. Maybe it's the quality of hair I'm using.
