Im running some Japanese Diatones Pronounced Diratones I am told. Don’t understand why but anyways. They are DS-W181 with the metal grills and oak. I found to my surprise the Genelac monitor woofer is the perfect replacement driver and it totally kicks the bass like it shouldve from factory.

You should try the omega Super Alnico High Output XRS. All the great soundstage of a single driver with reinforced base. It's a brilliant design and doesn't suffer from that loss of warmth you described. In fact, I would say midrange is their strength, sub-bass and detail are good but it's the midrange magic that shine on these.

Love full range speakers , especially for their choerence, no discontinuation in frequencies , all from one voice ,
    But.......and it is a big but :) ( sorry , could not resist) ..................
it has to be naturally well build and the driver has to be excelent ,
for me Voxativ all the way ,..until now continue to be the best full range drivers/speakers that i have ever heard .
    The 9.87 is stunning !
never heard their field coil drivers , unfortunately !!

Apart from the fact that i am building a dipole speaker with a pair of Lee Song F15 drivers , front from african tulipa wood 3,6cm board , driver works from behind the front , with a horn of sorts in the front due to the cutted edge , edges from the front board are rounded ,
feet are made from a very heavy kind of wood and lackered in black mat , are basically a rectangualr shape , with a sledge in the front of the feet where the front board falls between two pieces of rubber ,
cable is from Duelund , no crossover at all,
but for convienence i am going to build a " box " behind with via blue s-120 Terminals , so that i can simply plug in and out the speaker cables! front is going to be treated with a felt material .
waiting for the feet to be lackered to start the building/mounting of these ones.
they are going to be 119 when elevated by the feet , plus 60 large , and with 3,6cm deep (front board) .
Curious , how its going to sound !?

I'm also a big fan of Voxative drivers.
There are only a couple of negatives with them.
They take absolutely ages to break in. Once they have broken in they are sublime so this is only a negative for the first couple of hundred hours.
The other negative is the quality of the binding posts. These are, as Danny Richie would say, cheeeeesy. I replaced them with KLE binding posts and the difference was night and day.

Jay, adding an air core inductor in series will tame the high frequency brightness (did this with a 0.22mH choke added to a bright full range driver to very good effect).

Very strange to make such a resonate cabinet. I just don’t understand why they don’t invest in some damping and structural pieces to avoid the problems. Very strange!

I have the Lii Song Audio "Liionidas" open Baffle and love them, it has a lot of bass, even I sold my pair 10' B&W subs. I've owned other tower speakers but Lii Song have a sweet spot were music make you feel something, emotions, more than any other brand. They are not perfect but I really started to enjoy, feel, and get emotional with music, something I had lost searching speakers.

Decware uses this brand of speaker for some of their line of speakers. I purchased a pair of open baffles that incorporates Liisong 15 inch drivers. I picked them up for a very good price that included shipping. Extremely open and revealing speakers. But they need a lot of breaking in and a good subwoofer helps too. I plan to use them with a Decware amp I've been waiting for over two years to receive. Maybe this summer?

  • @Justwantahover

How to give them more bass and make them dipole:
Take the driver out, beef up the box inside and install a woofer in place of the FR driver, with a large inductor. And attach the FR driver open, on top of the box, sloped back by like 20 degrees, so the peak in the treble doesn't hit you (like you explained) and gives more layering in the soundstage and imaging is improved. For CRANKING, put a 100 mf cap on the FR driver. It's point source and dipole, for the BEST image you will hear in a speaker! So good that you can't tell if it's sound from outside or from the speakers. Sometimes I hear a "real" voice in my room (and I get a shock) then I realise it's the speakers. Yep, I build speakers like that with open FR drivers and open coaxials and a boxed woofer. I will NEVER go back! 😂

    A little (expensive) story.
Up till recently I drove Wharfedale Elysian 4s with an Allnic Audio 300b SET delivering 12 watts per side. It sounded great, but I used a Kinki amp for big, dynamic, music.
Icon Audio a UK tube specialist were selling ex dem single driver full range floorstanders for 30% of retail and I couldnt resist. Less than one tenth of the price of the Wharfedales. A stone cold bargain.
With the Allnic SET and with acoustic music and jazz the sound was revelatory. Much better than the Wharfedales. Astonishing. Neither the SET or the Elysians were reaching their potential together.
Now I have a 100w KT170 Allnic tube amp with the Elysians and the SET and Icons have their own room.
So the obvious bargain has cost me a fortune but taught me a lesson about Synergy. Low wattage tubes are born to live with sensitive single driver speakers. Its incredible.
Edit: The Icon FR2 speakers are fantastic. If you are in the UK, even at full price they are well worth it.

Is it correct to say that dual cone drivers are really 2-ways with a mechanical crossover? I think it's important to remember that if you reduce bass, all other things being equal, you will hear more detail on the top end simply because of psychoacoustics. Thanks for more thoughtful stuff and a great New Year!

    • @Justwantahover
      @Justwantahover 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

When the treble is drowned out by the bass, it's not psychol, it's just that it's harder to hear the top end cos FR's feable top end can easily be drowned out. But with bright tweeters it's a different story, you can have thumping bass and the top end still penetrates. That's why I like coaxials.

The internet tells me that I can not use my speakers with a tube amp. But I love the sound from my home made 6Watt E34L single ended ultra linear tube amp paired with my Polk R700. It does start distorting once in the mid 80 Spl, but great bass at normal volume. Better than with my 200 watt Rotel amp. So don’t believe everything people say on the internet.

I have built a dream diy (open baffle) speaker (atleast in my head😂) with their 21" subwoofer + audio elegance 15" le woofer + radian mid 10" ribbon planar + mundorf amt dipole. I can't imagine the sheer audio symphony that would create 🤔
Considering how great my diy car audio project sounds after going with a arylic amt7 i will never go back to anything fullrange or just dome tweeters. My car sounds better than my living room which is crazy but then again i did alot of sound deadening & insulation inside the doors so there's that.

Sounds like a very similar speaker to my Zu Union 6. 99db, 8 ohm, basically a single driver with a “super tweeter” I believe for over 14khz. Uniquely and intentionally designed cabinet to tune resonances. I am driving with a NAD analog preamp, 38 watt PrimaLuna EL34 based amp, also with a Martin Logan smaller 10 inch sub that is musically focused if you will. Lots of strong points and engaging. But….will be fatigued with poor recordings or too much toe in. I am actually looking to sweeten them a bit/ mellow them and considering something like a 300b amp. Or? Thoughts?

This video shows I was right to subscribe. You are nothing if not diplomatic, but the viewer is given enough information to decide whether these are to his liking. Personally, I will stay far away from this kind of speaker. Others have suggested that notch filters can tame the anomalies in the high end, but I doubt the wisdom of this approach. Yes, you can notch filter your way to a flatter looking frequency response curve, but that doesn't mean you've resolved the original problem which is the ringing.

I prefer speakers that aren't musical instruments in their own right. They will impose their own character on everything played through them. Nice or not.
(No speaker is perfect of course)
I'm using 2.2 LRS/RELs "open baffles" tube pre & SS amps for front row perspective.
KEF LS50/RELs SS for mid hall feel.😢
Rega Naos TLs for an el34 tube amp.
I'd love to hear Harley Lovegrove's Pearl Acoustics Sebelius full range/TL....
And Mofi's 888 seem worth an audition 😊

There is not.....

  • @mfr58

There is a whole live cabinet philosophy, discussed extensively on Real World Audio by Janos on YT. Whether they've implemented it properly here I don't know, the response certainly looks ragged and those resonances on the impedance curve look rather "peaky".

  • @jkim4712
    @jkim4712 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I think transparency should come from low distortion and neutral balance. Not from left up balance or certain aggressive frequency response. It may sounds like transparent or detailed at the beginning because you may hear something different and refreshing. But with long term listening, lift up balance and aggressive response will bring listening fatigue and less enjoyment of listening to music.

  • @georgechirayus4865
    @georgechirayus4865 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

Nice review. Suspect the design philosophy is the antithesis of what you enjoy or used to.
I think the cabinet is intended to behave like a musical instrument with the resonances (how successful it is on execution is another matter). Room treatment - especially bass traps are likely to negate what the speaker is trying to do to attain bass. It’s like that scene in ‘Saving Private Ryan’ where the glider pilot said that he crashed because someone wanted to protect the general by welding steel to the fuselage = FUBAR 😅
BTW, did you experiment with positioning the speaker into the corners / walls?

Definitely not my cup of tea and it’s too big for smaller rooms and it’s not neutral and transparent as say a Kef spkr. Anyway this reviewer won‘t understand neither of the systems concept. but that‘s ok, it‘s not his mainstream taste. A niche direction to music appreciation.

$3,300 for chinese speakers?! no. Probably cost them 8 bucks to make. Is that an old Christmas light in the center?

Jay, you may want to be a bit more direct in giving less than favorable reviews. You were going round in circles trying to be nice 😊

Loose the grafs, they add nothing without a ton of qualifiers. GR research’s grafs are bad enough stop just stop.

sad to see such a nice driver being used in such a resonant cabinet. shameful in fact.
Also, diffraction by bad cabinet design is obviously a problem.

Real trash speaker. Lacking in the bass, lack of linearity in the treble (after 10 minutes the head hurts). Difference between treble and bass of more than 30dB (information provided by the manufacturer itself) and high distortion when I obtained measurements of this crap. Call this product high fidelity? better high infidelity.
