This video reminds me of my post on IG the other day with my Versa failing after 4 years of 24/7 constant use. Some people would scream like crazy! I thought that was a pretty good run.

Thought the same! But a decent number of people would truly scream about that! Blows my mind. If you get a good few years out of a piece of equipment that is run intensively, that’s quite a solid run, imo.

Depends on is something fails to the point it crashes your tank, that's why a tank controller is so crucial. It just depends on what it is, LEDs are supposed to have a long run time but if mine burnt out in a year I'd be pretty pissed. Screaming isn't a good way of getting your point out, I'll just write a bad review on your product 😂!

Oh yeah, there are definite moments when criticism is warranted. I’m more talking about people who explode when a product like a doser has an issue after multiple years of running. I can’t understand those folks. Ha ha!

I bought a reef factory smart roller and out of the box the 2 main support bars were unglued and acrylic panels falling out. Premium Aquatics hasn't responded back from an email and 2 voice mails in over 2 days. But I am staying calm🤨

I’d be on the verge, with that one. Lol.

People don’t understand what it takes to design stuff 😂 failure is inevitable… as an ME working for navy watercraft no one expects even aircraft carriers to last forever we can engineer a calculated life expectancy… it’s a balance between cost an numerous factors… great video!

Thank you! I’m a rambler, but this is exactly what I was trying to get at! I used to work at a company that designed custom furnishings. Really complex stuff, as far as furnishings go. Working with engineers to make that stuff come to life, and learning about all the things they take into consideration regarding stress failures and use cases and projected functional life of certain moving parts, really made me think differently about products. Also, I was standing out in front directly dealing with clients, who often broke their own custom products due to misuse or lack of understanding, so I saw firsthand just how easily people “fumble the ball” on their own. Maybe 5% of the time, failures were on us. The other 95% was user-caused stuff. That’ll vary, of course, but users generally do a lot of damage on their own 🤣

I don’t support people being belligerent, that’s just not cool and salt water is a harsh environment. So you can’t expect some equipment to last forever. But certainly some realistic negative feedback is fine in my book. Particularly since the advertising and influencer game is so strong in the hobby. Some real world negative feedback is how we are going to get more durable and better products from these companies. I feel for new people who spend hundreds on a piece of equipment only to have it die early. As someone who’s had 2 controllers die, one dosing pump and two wavemakers die in the last 2 1/2 years, each one about 1 year or so old, I can relate to their frustration. All “high end” equipment. I’m not sure I buy the whole argument of “they are not apple.” Surely they aren’t, and I get what you’re saying, but some of these companies are pretty big. Check out some of the TH-cam tours of these companies and tell me they don’t have the resources to do a little better if they wanted to. Some certainly are not mom & pop small business. If you’re shelling out hundreds of dollars per piece of equipment from the big name brands in the hobby you should have a reasonable expectation of life expectancy for said equipment or at least good customer service when hiccups do occur. For me, I vote with my dollars. There’s two large companies in the hobby that I’m done with and they won’t be getting any more of my money or recommendations because I’ve seen their product quality and I’m not impressed.

I hear you, but this is different than what I’m talking about here. This takes more into consideration than: “My thing broke after several years, my thing was expensive, I will destroy _______ company now!” The Trident is a prime example. You know me, Trevor. I am as critical of Aperture and Neptune as anyone. But I have to give them due credit on my particular Trident. It seems quite well-built. 4 years is a solid run, doing multiple tests per day, every day. But there are people with a Trident that throws them an error after years of reliable service, who absolutely lose their marbles over needing to send it in for service. Now an expensive doser or something that dies in under 6 months, that warrants a serious conversation with customer support for sure.

@@TrevorHiller the longest lol. It’s not worth shaving months off your life chasing the anger, over every little thing. Gotta pick and choose the battles. Like when my brand new Radions made creaking noises when they heated up. I picked that battle 🤣 But Trident dying after 4 years? Take my $150, not worth a fight.

@@kalamazoo_reeferAlso want to add the folks who buy something used and then expect it to last forever - you don’t know how the last owner treated it.

@@ReefingwithO That is very true. I always enter into anything used with low expectations. You just can’t know. Heck, the person who sold it probably doesn’t know how much life is left in it, either. Sometimes it’s a gem of a deal and works out for years. Sometimes, it dies a week later. 😂
