Why I Cut the Logos Off All My Clothes

  • Today I'm getting into the reasons why I choose to remove the logos from all my clothing and generally keep an "unbranded" wardrobe. I then show the main technique I use to remove logos from clothing I buy. Let me know what you think in the comments!

    Tip for the seam ripper, that little ball on the end protects the garment underneath, so you can use the longer sharp end to cut the threads enough to make room for the ball side. Then you stick the ball end underneath the patch and run the tool along the seam ripping the threads that way, protecting the garment underneath and quickly ripping the threads.

    I've actually been doing this since I was a kid. For different reasons, I thought logos and signatures were tacky.
    When I did art I wouldnt even sign my name. Won a couple competitions and they'd always ask why I didnt sign it. Now as an adult and with the rise of AI, I understand the need for some citations.

    In India we have "Khadi" industry. Which is basically a cottage-level industry (smaller than the standards of a small industry), producing organic food item, simplistic cotton handloom clothing. All of their clothing are pretty comfortable and minimalistic-looking. Also, these clothes are mostly made by handloom artists who live in remote villages, don't get much money or recognition for their work. I prefer these kinda clothing, let it be casual day-to-day life, or any special ocassion.

    I do this around my house. I remove packaging, cover up labels on my appliances, tech, etc, and decanter everything i can because i hate being advertised to every day in my own home. I go as far as to flip any branded reusable shopping bags inside out especially with current controversy and accc investigation against australias grocery conglomerates. It might sound crazy but it absolutely makes you want more. When you see a brand in store, that youve been looking at every day for months or years, you start to associate that brand with the comfort of your home and it builds a false trust and that you ought to have that item. Nope. Not for me.

    Hi Spencer! Great video!!! There are three important things that I would like to add to your video:
    - any garment is treated with a chemical with a rodent/insect repellant to preserve it during storage/shipping;
    - thus before putting it on for an extended period of time, it would be a good practice to wash it. turning it inside out and cold cycle will clean the garment and will also help dark colours to further strengthen the bound to the fibre. It will also help you with understanding if the garment is good to keep or to return;
    - as last manovre, you can start removing tags or any other patch, but some holes will appear. No worries, it’s is a natural structural response from stress, washing it again will render the threads soft and to regain the pattern. If you are not into washing it again, you can always iron the stressed spot with a little bit of steam.
    Source: worked in the “industry” for five years, had a skin rush, started to research, entered the rabbit hole, found my own escamotages while saving up a little bit of money for good stuff, quit the job and the industry.

    I found this very interesting and thought-provoking. Our society is based heavily on materialism, and everyone's miserable in return. This seems like steps to break the cycle - focusing on people more than things - even something as seemingly small as clothing. Keep up the great vids!

    if it's carhartt or something then i get it but if it's a small business where you know it was handmade and a lot of care/creativity went into making it, then that's the kind of thing i want to promote. i'm not gonna cover the signature when i hang up a painting. and as someone with a very unique style who considers fashion as more of a hobby, i like seeing others show brands that suit my taste. few stores have what i like, and i feel best in very specific clothes that aren't so easy to come by. it helps when i see those brands

    I mostly subscribe to this train of thought and wear almost strictly plain, single color items of clothing. My only hang up with doing this is that I find some logos add nice color to break up some really simple basics. I don't want all my outfits to look like I'm a lego guy. So for me the little red dickies label on my pants doesn't bother me and makes the clothing just a bit more interesting. Keep up the good videos!

    Nice. I made a conscious effort to avoid branded clothing years ago. It makes items more suitable in a wide range of situations and plan t-shirts don’t go out of date. I tend to wear them until they’re no longer respectable and then bulk buy 4 of the same colour to replace them. The online store I use, Rapanui, even give you credit for sending the old ones back so they can be recycled into more clothing. Although these days I try to buy from Community Clothing in the UK as it’s all locally made. Sorry, that was along comment but the video really resonated with me!

    After you pull out a stitch or two, enough to be able to grab the end of the thread, you can tug on that thread to loosen the thread underneath that's holding it down. It makes it easier to pull out the next stitch. Cut the first stitch, tug on the end and pull the thread out of the next loop, then tug again and continue.

    This is an interesting idea. I work blue collar so I definitely need jeans that last. I have tried the Denver Hayes but those tear after a couple months so I started buying Levi's. I also moved back to Levi's. The thing that bugged me most about other brands is that when I found a nice pair, wore it and came back after two years, they didn't carry that model anymore. With Levi's, once you figure out what model and size you like, you can just keep ordering them.

    Hi Spencer, discovered your channel a few months and i have been watching your new uploads religously since then. I admire the principles set here about not advertising the companies and wanting to be brand free. I was wondering if you would consider doing a video on radio broadcasts and picking up a potential cheap radio to pick up AM FM and DAB stations, i live in Scotland, UK. and the UK government over here have proposals to cut FM and AM frequencies after a certain threshold of users using the DAB radios (digital) - your thoughts on this would be great. Its quite topical in America at the moment with some talk of AM broadcasts being cut in the future. I enjoy radio, i hardly ever watch TV and its a good free way (after the inital purchase) of consuming talk and music content. Your 2 Cents would be appreciated on this matter. Maybe you could segway into the field of internet radio as well. And a cover of a piece of music from yourself would be most welcome, anyways...Many Thanks - Antonio.

    The irony is that the truly best quality clothes, say a fine wool handmade suit, or handcrafted leather shoes, which may be expensive upfront , but which will last you a lifetime, don’t have logos. The King of England wears a pair of John Lobb shoes that he got in 1968. He is always wearing suits he got 30 years ago- and looks great in them- whatever you may think of him personally- …….the best things are typically handcrafted, last a lifetime, and Don’t have an exterior logo anywhere to be found

    I'm a bit split on this. I think while brands do serve a purpose, absolutely you are a walking billboard and it's usually a sort of status symbol. Even beyond clothing, like Apple or Gucci or recently, the idiotic Stanley cup craze(seriously spend five minutes in a gym and you'll see countless of them). You could even extend this conversation into the car community, as debadging the logo of your car is a semi popular mod, but some people carry the sentiment of "you should be proud of the car you own" and hate debadging. The car enthusiast in me likes logos to stay a part of any car build, but the anti-capitalist in me would disagree as you are still advertising whichever given brand.

    Ironically, I have to shill for Duluth pants here. They are the longest lasting pants I've ever owned. Tough fabric and a gusset in the crotch are the key features regardless of brand. The gusset will make you able to squat and move around in them without tearing. Unfortunately, the rise is still a bit short on them. I don't get why no one has made pants with a long rise that actually fully accommodates tall guys and their balls. Do they assume everyone is balless or wants to wear them low? I am fine with logos to a point, but I don't go out of my way to buy them. I won't cover or trim the MEC logo, but I also won't advertise for a company by wearing something with their logo splashed all over it (Think a Michael Kors bag, a Hugo Boss t-shirt that has "Hugo Boss" in 3" letters. There are brands I like but my Barbour jacket speaks for itself, my Irish sweater says so on the inside, my Burberry coat only says "Burberry" on the inside. FYI: James Bond wore a Carhartt hat with the square logo taken off.

    • @spencers-adventures
      @spencers-adventures  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree and have changed my stance on this to a degree. I won’t typically wear a random company’s logo, but certain brands that I feel align with my values I’m okay with wearing, like perhaps Patagonia. With another commenter mentioned this but I like that a logo patch creates some visual interest and breaks up the plain colour on a tshirt that is otherwise plain. Like the Carhartt pocket shirt in this. I have been buying used T-shirt’s with maybe some print or older brand on it, and enjoying that. For me it’s been focusing on the quantity now and trying to live my values beyond just showing them with my clothing. If they plain clothes are all brand new T-shirts it’s not any more ethical from an environmental standpoint than any other printed or logo shirt, so there’s that too. Lots to consider but ultimately I’m just trying to own less in general.
      Sounds like you have some high quality pieces that’ll last a long time and are rather timeless also. Love the Barbour jackets. Very interesting fact about Bond too, wasn’t aware of that!

    So... Riddle me this... Why wear ANYTHING with a logo when there are unbranded products available?! You're CHOOSING to wear a brand (regardless of their logo, which is a moot point entirely... If someone says "hey, nice shirt - What is it?" are you going to lie and say "unbranded" or are you going to say "Adidas, but I removed the logo"...? This is SO pretentious... STOP BUYING BRANDED PRODUCTS IF YOU DON'T LIKE WEARING BRANDS... My God.

    • @spencers-adventures
      @spencers-adventures  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I don’t think you’ve thought this through. What’s unbranded to you? Fruit of the loom? Hanes? You can’t escape companies when buying products unless you’re making them yourself, and that’s not super feasible. The problem with the budget brands that you are mistaking to be “unbranded” is that they are often lower budget textiles and stitched. And just because I want a shirt that can hold up to the rigours of life doesn’t mean I wish to broadcast their logo for them. Unless I feel strongly that I align with a brand I choose to not broadcast their logo.

    People do this with their Jeeps. No clue why, it's not like we can't tell...

    I get such bad cult leader vibes from this guy. Branding is more than just about advertisement. It can be seen as smoke and mirrors, or as an evil. I don't defend huge companies, Nike and Carhartt are doing just fine. But I think the rejection and almost pious condescension about consumerism is going to cause a pendulum effect. What would probably be wiser is to work with ethical branding as a way to ensure quality and attention, rather than the pure rejection of it.

      Though not always the case I find blanks are usually a bit cheaper quality as well. However, you’re onto something there!

    If something is made with quality, why not let other people know who made it?

      For me it’s just because I feel like I’m a walking advertisement. Unless I’m obsessed with the company and really want to promote them, then maybe I’d change my tune, but for me there is no company I’d want to rep their logo. Sometimes people wear so many logos they look like city bus or a NASCAR lol. I think too that given that pretty much any fashion is made in not okay situations and it’s almost impossible to avoid it, I’d rather not give companies this free advertisement if I don’t fully align with their practices

      For me, personally, I think certain tags look tacky. If it’s embroidered on, it tends to look better. But if someone is curious about what you’re wearing or where you got an item, they typically ask (:

    Do not worship brands! Unless they pay you.
