TSP is my only regret. I didn't start til I went AGR with 12-13 years left. Now I'm putting my 5% in every month and BAH paying fully home/investment and eventually 52% pension at 42.
Just glad after leaving Marines for the guard that it wasn't easy to get equal pay and benefits and kept taking orders til I got AGR. Now I'm doing well and supporting my wife and I well. No regrets.

I became a millionaire and the Army 100% helped me do that through MY decision to use the GI Bill and the VA loan. Additionally, my 8 years of service helped shorten the time it will take me to retire from the federal gov.

Coming back to the military was the best lifetime decision ever….Started out with 4 years active plus two in the reserves, then went home. Fifteen years later, I returned to the reserves at almost 41 years of age. Stayed until age 60, had five deployments during those years. Now I’m happily retired, collecting a pension plus a little extra from disability. Thanks for this video.

Low cost of living, low taxes, more freedoms, healthier environments, and high passive income stream from tourists and expats. With 16 years AD Navy I was able to transfer my education benefits to my family. One thing never talked about with transferring your benefits is that you must have 4 years remaining on your contract. Luckily a fellow brother told me 2 months before my deadline as I'm already locked in for 20years with my current contract. This was huge. When I say transfer education benefits, what I mean is you are making them eligible to be able to use it. If they chooses to not use it, you can still use it yourself. Bottom line is if you're going to transfer benefits you have to have 4 years remaining on contract at the time of doing so.

I honestly never understood the whole argument of “we don’t make any money”. I am an E5 who has been in for 4 years making about $75k a year with BAH and pay little in taxes because on paper I make about $30k. People don’t realize how much of a benefit it is for them to just be taxing your base pay. When I was an E3 I didn’t make jack but they need to understand that the pay gets better with time, and not that much time.

I used my 100% service connected disability to discharge $135,000 in student loan debt back in 2013. I earned my MS in Health Psychology and most of my PH.D studies at that time including residencies were paid by that Department of Education funding even though I didn’t finish my PH.D since the money ran out 8 months before graduation. A
I had to do was get a VA letter stating I was 100% disabled and apply to the Department of Education for a discharge and it was granted to me within 6 weeks. Is it wise, or do you recommend, joining as an adult? I’m 33 years old, single, no kids, no debt, great credit, and a bit of savings. My reason for joining is all I’ve worked in has been dead-end jobs and I want to hard-pivot into a career debt free so I can set myself up for my future family and golden years. Admittedly, I’ve made poor choices in my early years as well as with my career. I’m close to the cut off age for joining in the Army, but I’ve a few years left for other branches.

@@estebanhenriquez3491 If all you’ve had are dead end jobs then I highly recommend going active duty. I don’t know your medical history but a lot of times those issues could be waived. If you don’t want to fully commit to full time active duty then I highly recommend going to the reserves as there are a lot of benefits you can still get albeit not as many as active duty.

Ultimately it’s up to you but I think it would be really challenging to start a military career when you are older. I joined at 18 and it was an easier transition because I had minimal life experience to compare it to. But the poor pay and benefits combined with the micro managing and volatile work conditions is not something I would tolerate now that I’m older.

I joined the Army at 27. It is not bad joining in later 20’s and early 30’s if you are in good athletic shape. I had been working out my whole life, and there was a man in my platoon in Basic who was 47, but he was a beast. You have to have the Run down pat. That is the big thing.
Then, select an M.O.S. that is going to have real world translation into something meaningful and up to date. Cyber and Information Systems is the way to go for this new digital age, Trades from the Engineer/Construction side, and Medical will be good also to look at.
Being older you will have more life experience which will help you better navigate interactions. However, if you already have a degree I strongly encourage you to go the O.C.S. route or if you choose the enlisted path first. Then, rank up to Sergeant to put in the Warrant Officer packet.
It will be better as an older person because it will help save your sanity. I hope this helps. Be well.

I want to go to the USAFA and I was looking at the pay as an O-1 straight out of the academy and it 100k per year "total regular military compensation". Even after that in ~2 years you can become an O-2 and that gets another 20k increase. Plus the military has been very good at matching inflation at least compared to other jobs so I'll be living the dream if I get in to USAFA.

The TSP is awesome. I have used it for 27 years in federal service and wish I would have had this option when I was in the AF. 90% C 10% S works for me. Retirement 80% C 20% G it’s good to have the cash bucket to hold you in a crappy market.

  • @Rocky-or4rz
    @Rocky-or4rz 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

I paid into my TSP for about 5 years, then I separated from the military and kind of forgot about it. I checked it at about 10 years later, and again at about 17 years later, the TSP lost money in that time. I have since pulled that money out and put it in my current retirement where it is growing much better. I left the military in 2006 with about $16k in my TSP. When I absorbed it into my current retirement there was $15k in it after almost 20 years of 'growth'. I could have stuck that in a checking account and made more money off of it than TSP. I can personally verify everything else you talked about has been incredible for me. Especially GI Bill and VA home loan. Those are both great programs. I was able to squeeze out two bachelors degrees out of my GI Bill so it is totally possible. And there is no top limit to how many credits you take per semester. If you want to load up 20 credits a semester you can. You just will not have much sanity afterwards lol.

My 100% service connected disability also allowed me to discharge my $135,000 student loans after filing a veterans disability student loan discharge application to the U.S. Department of Education and now they’ll discharge it if you are so disabled that you draw Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) from the Veterans Administration. Folks I just got a veteran with 100% disability to discharge his $87,000 student loan debt on December 31 2024! Happy New Year! Just apply to the Department of Education! 💵💰👍🇺🇸

13:58 Great video! Just a quick clarification:
You mention the Service Member Civil Relief Act (SCRA) and how it reduces interest rates to 6% for debts incurred prior to military service, which is absolutely correct. However, you suggest that some companies reduce interest rates and fees for debts incurred while already on active duty purely out of goodwill-but that’s not entirely accurate.
This is actually covered under the Military Lending Act (MLA), which is similar to the SCRA but applies to all debts incurred by active-duty service members, regardless of when they were taken out. The MLA caps interest rates at 36% and prohibits certain fees, like prepayment penalties.
That said, you are correct about annual fee waivers for certain credit cards, like the Amex Platinum. These waivers aren’t mandated by the SCRA or the MLA; they’re additional perks offered voluntarily by some major banks to support active-duty service members.

HEY! ACTIVE DUTY here* just wanted to say most of what he said is true BUT TO MY FIRST TERM GUYS ---> if you are thinking about doing college while in the military using TA, you guys are not lucky. I'm in the same boat, but you are allowed to benefit/apply for TA after being 3 YEARS in, and you have to be more than 6 MONTHS OUT from your contract ending. If you are only going in for the GI bill, that is valid. But do not think you will get TA in your first contract unless it's more than 3 years and 6 months. I know it sucks but it's a new rule. Also, when you're military, you could get a lower tuition rate for classes depending on what school you apply to. I can make a video on this if you guys want. One more thing about the commissary and NEX/PX. Yes about the sales tax, but also no about stuff being cheaper, but that depends on where you live. If where you live is cheap to live, you might find out that a grocery trip is 50 dollars less at Walmart than if you went to the commissary, or that TV is Hella cheap at best buy, but in the NEX/PX it's 500. Very situational, but look for yourself before you go off of someone's opinion.

Is there a nicotine tolerance? I've watched movies and know that soldiers smoke, but I'm not sure how it is for real, like in person. I also have a question about the PYSCH part. If someone has a suicide attempt but it has been years (3 years or so and has been off all medication since then) and that person has been cleared through therapy and can get their therapist to sign or talk to the recruiter, would that person be automatically disqualified from joining the Infantry Branch? If you catch my drift. I'm looking forward to achieve goals in the military, and am much excited about it, hopefully I get through everything though.

After retirement I dumped TSP by transferring to a rollover IRA then converted all to Roth. The TSP inheritance rules are just too horrible for estate planning. My granddaughters will get 10 years of tax free withdrawals to deplete the Roth verse a lump sum taxable payout with TSP.
On #8, since all the allowances are not taxed they also do not count towards retired pay. And the other drawback is they do not count towards Social Security benefits. The difference in retirement can be thousands a year once you start SS. Knowing now how it works I would have gladly paid the taxes over my 28years while in the lower tax bracket to collect more for the rest of my life.

Sophisticated investor here, I also bet on Trump winning, it’s only silly if you didn’t know it was a for sure deal 😉

@ just making a joke about the betting on presidential outcome comment. I love your content, I’m an 82nd vet who was only aware of the GI bill, VA loan, and disability income (which I only recently applied for after being out for 8 years, after a fellow vet and I had a conversation about how it’s not just for being ‘disabled’, but also for the daily pain I live with). Following your content has been very helpful to understanding what benefits are available and how to access them. Thank you!

Saying the govt is paying is a way to hide the truth, govt equals taxpayers. Everyone seems to like socialism when it benefits them.
