  • Becoming Happier: A Conversation with Tara Brach and Arthur Brooks [2023-11-15]
The Dalai Lama regularly says that everyone wants to be happy, nobody wants to suffer. Arthur Brooks, in his new book on getting happier (co-authored with Oprah Winfrey) digs into the practical and science-based approaches that increase deep wellbeing.
In this conversation Tara and Arthur discuss the ingredients of happiness, the role of unhappiness in our lives, how to work with core ego-fears, the power of metacognition, the necessity of transcendence of small self and the love that is the grounds of true happiness.

Listening to this conversation is how I started my day today. It was very helpful thank you. I heard your guest interviewed about the course he teaches at Harvard before and was impressed. I don’t think I would have been interested in reading the book he’s written with Oprah unless I ha listened to your interview with him. I think this is because I have come to trust you and your teachings and perhaps have been sceptical of Oprah endorsed books. So my mind and heart are more open to what this book may offer. Thank you for all your content it has helped me over the last decade. While I was following a Rick Hanson online course he interviewed you in one session; that’s how I started following your channel . Thank you it’s been very grounding for me over challenging and unsettling times.🙏

This is my first time commenting though I've been listening to and watching Tara's videos for years. Thank you from my heart for this gift. I fully agree with what someone else commented: "I don’t think I would have been interested in reading the book he’s written with Oprah unless I had listened to your interview with him. I think this is because I have come to trust you and your teachings and perhaps have been skeptical of Oprah endorsed books." This is a book I will read though and these are the kinds of discussions that move mountains.

"Unhappiness" is not an attribute. It is not something you have or carry around with you. It is not a feature of your personality. Unhappiness is not a condition. It is not a quality that exists. It is not inevitable. As Rupert Spira (and others) have pointed out, "unhappiness" is a veiling of innate happiness. Happiness is your nature (or rather, happiness is the experience you have of your self when nothing is concealing your true nature). "Unhappiness" is ignorance of, or blindness to, your own essential nature.

I have a question about 1:18:46. Speaking of the transactional nature of love, when he brings up the subject of "homeless" people asking for money (who may be drug addicts-how can he know this?) and talks about Jesus, and then proudly states that he requests that beggars pray for him to keep the "circulatory system of love" open. Does he mean that rather than give money to those asking, he asks them to pray for him? I hope I have misunderstood him.

When Tara described her RAIN technique for calming a limbic response, he gave a meandering response which ended with "journaling is better". Tara was very zen about it but I found his response to be egotistical and self-promoting. Why not say "journaling is another good technique but people should stick with what works best for them"? I actually like both journalling and RAIN but I won't be reading his book because he didn't demonatrate the qualities of a good teacher in this video.

Same here. Maybe the content was ok, but he sounded more like the new wave of trendy neuroscientists and others who by default speak fast, teach at ivy league schools and don’t give you much time to just enjoy their words and their presence. Wouldn’t it be a nice refreshing change for the Harvard kids, to have a teacher who transpires peacefulness? Sadly, this gentleman doesn’t.

Tara's Radical Acceptance has really opened my eyes how to love myself fully,. I do wish Tara had questioned Arthur more for his Zionist ideas and conservatism. He should encourage Oprah to support taxing the rich to pay their fair share. Oprah's support of this issue would be so helpful in closing the gap between the rich and poor and help income inequality in this country. Unfortunately I do not think Arthur nor Oprah really care about inequality in the USA. They need to keep their millions and billions of dollars so they can do their PET projects and get huge tax breaks.

@@liana2136 when anyone starts with “what a load of BS”…it shows a certain combination of arrogance and ignorance, and is far from curiosity, humility, and other character traits which create connection to ourselves and others.
While I can see that someone would find this man a bit pompous, and irritating, I also see how facing that in others gives us a chance to examine our own level of consciousness. It seems this deeper concept is far out of your grasp and instead, you go with your impulsive, primitive, limbic system reaction and develop a retort from that space. Consider developing introspection and metacognition, mindfulness, “practice the pause” as Tara so wisely says, and then move forward with grace, compassion, awareness.
I’ve worked with thousands of patients, am a grandparent. I have loads of experience with seeing when parts of the brain are being hijacked. Control yours before it sabotages you, your relationships, your goals…beyond where it likely already has.

Mixed feelings. Too much performing on his side for my taste. Theres such profound contrast between Tara and Arthur. He seems to believe that if you explain science to people, they will apply it and simply be happier. I dont buy into that. If that was the case, telling an addict "Hey, alcohol is bad for you, here's the science to back it up" would be enough. We are far more complexed than that. And I'm sorry to say that, but if my kid was a sniper, I wouldn't teach people what to do with their lives. Clearly, you kind of failed as a parent. Big time.
