No love for Matteo Jorgenson? Jonas' best domestique, top 10 on GC, and almost a stage win... Too bad Visma didn't have Kuss. (Not saying Jonas would have won -- nothing would have stopped Tadej -- but could have been a lot more interesting.)

I think Visma and Astana should probably be switched. They obviously were focused on getting MC his record stage win but after that they didn’t have any success in sprints or even really got any riders in the breakaway. Low A or upper B tier.
Visma, like expected, had Jonas in the top 2, had Mateo Jorgensen in the top 10 and just to add onto it, Wout Van Aert was in the top 3 on a couple sprints.

@@TheGotoGeek Well with that logic that means all the teams with no expectations should be in A or B tier because they did what everyone expected right? Of course not. Visma didn’t just accomplish any goal, they got top 2 in the tour in terms of individual AND team general classification without one of their top riders. I think that deserves an A tier no matter how high their expectations were

Looking at Astana's Tour more critically, they got the 35th win for Cavendish, which was their aim, but they didn't position him particularly well for pretty much any of the other sprints apart from Stage 5 where he got that win, and the one time they did put him in a decent position, on Stage 12, Cav ended up getting relegated from 5th place for deviating (which was a little contentious I think). But well, as a Cavendish fan, the one win was enough, though I'd have loved him to get more. While it was good that the win came early on it did mean that I was quite nervous for the rest of the race when it came to the mountain stages, hoping he'd beat the time limit and make it to Nice! Astana did execute their sheparding job in the mountains really well though, even though they cut it fine with the time limit on a few occasions and lost half of their riders, and Tejada was involved in several of the breakaways as well. I think I'd probably give them a B. If Cav had been more competitive in the sprints/set up for them better then I'd perhaps up it to an A. But at the same time, the one time he was put in prime position for a sprint finish he delivered, and he had to work for it too, having to find the space amongst the other sprinters!

I would have ranked Visma an A for Jonas, but B for the team. I agree, they should have played a different strategy with the sprint stages. I think missing Sepp Kuss due to illness really hurt them in the mountains. Having Wout, Sepp, and Matteo pulling would have helped Jonas a bit more.

idk i dont feel like visma in b is justified. sure a van aert stage win would have been nice, but in no way could they be expected to win the tdf considering the difference in Vingegaards and pogacars preparation and also no kuss, van baarle and kruiswijk, Vingegaard/van aert crash etc. Jonas stage win and the second place in gc are pretty impressive considering all that happened before. i really think this is too harsh. Otherwise i mostly agree, good tierlist. Keep it up Benji ✌

    • @andreasabels589
      @andreasabels589 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree B tier is somewhat harsh. At least Jonas got that stage win (ontop of P2 GC, but a podium was kind of expected otherwise he wouldn't have started). But the rest of the team did very little. Jorgensen was decent in week 3, but not amazing compared to the other premium helpers like Almeida or Landa. Wout was not too far of in the sprints, but it felt like he didn't try to force a victory like EF did. The rest of the team did pretty much nothing. I expected more from Laporte and others.
Like, when a GC team controlled the race, it was UAE doing it. Didn't feel like they did much all tour.

  • @yvesgysel9834
    @yvesgysel9834 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, Benji, I can live with your list. UAE was on a class of
It's own. I am glad you mentioned Almeida. Working for Tadje while securing a very good spot in the general classification. He's definitely capable of winning a GC. That's when he does not have to work and gets support. Now Landa is a bit the same story. Working for Remco and being excellent as a climber. He's riding The Vuelta to win it. Jonas was riding very well, especially if you consider his injuries. He did not have the preparation he needed. His team was good, but certainly not as good as in the past éditions of the TDF. So I believe if Jonas stays healthy and gets a better preparation and Sepp is there, he could challenge Pogi again in the next TDF. Remco proofed he can be consistent in GC's. He said (he was also coming back from injuries), he needs more specific trainings in mountain stages, losing weight to close the gap on Jonas and Pogi. He's pretty sure he's capable of it.

Thanks Benji, great review. Your teams ranking is something that I always look forward to! My take: 1) Arkea with an A, it seems wrong to rate them that high, however, as you noted, given their grand tour performances over the past few events the fact that they were not "S" is notable, 2) you were generous in not giving Decathlon an "S" ranking, 3) on Visma I believe that they deserved an "A". With the state of the team coming into the TdF, the fact that Jonas as a solid 2nd (given his challenges) and the fact that Mateo was a notable star and confirmed his amazing season, they deserved an "A". By the way, the fact that you did not even mention Mateo for Visma means that us Americans are justified in throwing some shade your way, 4) it pains me to say that Ineos probably deserved an "S" given the team they brought, their potential and their team budget, 5) Astana deserves the "A" because they had one goal and they met the goal under extreme pressure.

Benji loving your takes and Watt Police who are noting alongside Nero show how your getting under JB’s skin. Hard to disagree with your take. The shocker is given how promisingly their season started Decathlon on their Van Rysel bikes had a shocker.
Hot suggestion😂: You and Patrick go help Remco (at Redbull 😮 - once the budget of £56million is realised) take on the mighty Tadej in future years… Remco does need to find 0.3w/kg but given his prep this year - that is possible. It’d help if ASO plan a route with 70km of flat TT. That’d be an excellent proposition for Broe to mastermind a Remco strategy. Also may need to hope someone at UAE doesn’t notice they can improve Tadej ‘s TT position (if his head lowers by 6-7cm he’s beating Remco on TT 1 this year) then we’ll see the first Belgian tour winner in several generations. He does have the ability!!!

I heavy disagree on Visma should be in A they had a stage win and 2nd in GC.
Trek should be in B, they fought hard all the way thru the tour and was very visible.
Intermache should be and A cause they didn’t do anything else then winning 3 stages. And was very invincible on the flat stages until the end on the stage.
Bora should be in DNF cause they were never there.
Could argue for Jayce Alula to be an A tier they did amazing this tour.
Total energies should only be a B cause they were barely fighting for wins only on stage 18 where they got 2nd and Craz doing well after that crash.

A few things I would change:
Move Decathlon into D tier - Just doesn't feel right to have them in the same tier as Groupama, bc at least they were active in GC and their breakaways went farther than groupama's
Trek into C tier - I think it's clear to everyone that Pedersen would have performed if he didn't crash out; they were on great form in first week with him. Also, Bernard being active and going for win is a plus. Ciccone did much better in GC than I imagined, too.
Bahrain down to D - After three stage wins in last year's tour, and relatively little camera time for Buitrago, this performance is completely disappointing. Totally sad about sickness, but that is part of how a team manages the TdF also.
Arkea down to B - Phenomenal stage win, good work from Christian Rodriguez, but basically invisible after that. Tough to be that invisible after only Day 2, in my opinion.
Alpecin - Good number of stage wins, no complaints there. But it was the delay of those wins and the lack of control from the team that feels like a let down compared to normal levels. Everybody was asking a lot of questions about Philipsen and the squad when they didnt get a stage win until Week 2. Also coming off of incredible control throughout the classics season, the team's performance noticeably lacked that cutting edge

Visma getting 2 place in GC and a stage win should give them the same level as SoudalQS based on their 3rd place and stage win. As to Red Bull Bora, perhaps Benji should address the rumor that Remco will lead them next year?
As to the sweet hagiography of UAE and in particular the comment that Pog was climbing better than even pure climbers, maybe Benji has forgotten that when the 2024 parcour was unveiled in Sept 2023 their was a universal sentiment among cycling journo’s that it was designed to favor Pog and Remco over Jonas and Primoz in that it was hard but had no sustained big mountain climbs - talking here about climbs >12-15 km and an average gradient of >10%. It’s this sort of climb that Jonas can make Tadej go into the red and even bonk.
Compare with the last climb of this year’s Queen stage which was 12km at a consistent 8% - perfectly suits Tadej over Jonas esp as at 8% Tadej still has the ability for his trademark explosive attacks. On paper this climb should also have suited Remco but he could not make it work on the day.

That's not correct. Majority of cycling journalists said it fitted Vingegaard better because it had long-effort mountains.
"talking here about climbs >12-15 km and an average gradient of >10%"
Jonas won the Tour de France last year and there were 0 climbs like that.
Jonas won the Tour de France in 2022 and there were 0 climbs oike that.

    · 5 teams deserve to be S-tier: UAE and Intermarche but also Quickstep, Visma and Alpecin --- All of the new ones completed their main objective very well (Alpecin got a few wins, Quickstep got a podium and Visma was the main GC threat)
    · EF and Total did their thing nicely enough, A-tier
    · Uno-X deserves A-tier = They grew smaller and smaller over the days but that was their gameplan, it reminded me of how small F1 teams would often send guys on a suicide mission (the car would always fail) just to be on TV but that's not a horrible plan.
    · Arkea and Astana should be B-tier = They both appeared for 2 days and a half. Astana had horrible planning and almost lost Cavenidsh like thrice while Arkea bet everything on Vauquelin to the point they wasted Cristian Rodríguez, who could've gotten them a lot of UCI points by being top15 or better in the GC.
    · Movistar deserves B-tier = Lazkano, Romo and Aranburu showed up on TV a ton. Everyone knew Mas was gonna be shit so they decided to be on TV and have fun and they did. They'll probably make a lot of money by selling those 3 talents.
    · DSM, Jayco and Israel did their thing in a mediocre way so B-tier
    · Lotto should be dropped to C-tier = de Lie and van Gils were both shit while Campenaerts worked in 2 out of 21 days
    · Bahrain's only reason for C-tier is Buitrago = Bilbao sucked, Bauhaus sucked, Haig sucked, Mohoric sucked, Poels sucked...
    · Lidl-Trek's only reason for C-tier is Ciccone (and only because he was in the Giro)
    · Cofidis was borderline F-tier = If you eliminate Martin, they were F-tier without a doubt (awful selection, no performance)
    · Ineos was borderline F-tier = If you eliminate Carlitos, they were F-tier without a doubt (really bad selection, no performance)
    · I DON'T BELIEVE IN D-TIER

Too many easy As. And only one C. Even if you allow a little grade inflation, most grades should be a B or C. Half of the teams get an A. And, maybe too many D and DNS.
Total Energies got a stage win, an excellent stage win. But, that does not earn them an A. Maybe a high B. DSM getting the same grade, when they put Bardet in yellow - for a day. Lotto also got a nice win, but not as nice as DSM or Total Energies. Still, these are B+ to C teams, as is Astana. Astana's one win got huge attention, but otherwise bupkiss.
Generally, I agree with a lot of order, just not where they are bunched up. Those As are really not near the results that were obtained by your two top teams. And, I question the rating for Intermarche. They won green, three stages, got lots of press, all they could've hoped for, so, A+
UAE won GC, put 3 riders in the top ten, six stages, everything they could have wished for but polka dots, and the polka dots UAE gave away because the smart tactics were not to follow Carapaz.
Tough to rate teams with bad luck as poorly as teams that just did not perform. Bad luck teams include Ineos and Red Bull - Bora, but keeping out of crashes and staying healthy is part of racing the Tour. So, both get lower marks because of they lost riders due to health issues. I would rate Movistar higher than either, because Mas was still trying until the end of Stage 20. But, Movistar is still a C-minus to D team.
