This video feels like THE ultimate guidebook for anyone looking to understand Château La Mission Haut-Brion in less than 13 minutes. You’ve expertly woven together its rich history, winemaking philosophy and approach, and all the essentials we need to know about its wines including collecting strategies. It’s such an invaluable resource for both seasoned collectors and curious enthusiasts. Your breakdown of vintages and thoughtful buying tips are particularly insightful - very useful and helpful for all wine lovers, not just for Bordeaux fans like me. You definitely poured both expertise and passion into this video, and it’s truly a compelling deep dive into what might just be - and should be - the 6th First Growth! Well done! Cheers and happy weekend, John!
Thanks very much! Appreciate the support and glowing review! So glad you enjoyed it! Definitely wanted to do a comprehensive video for this outstanding producer, which can be a bit overlooked! Cheers!
@@AttorneySomm You’re welcome. Truly outstanding video!
@ Thank you! Very much appreciated!
I have been hoping you would make a video on La Mission!! It it my favorite estate in the entire Bordeaux along with Haut-Brion❤ thanx!
@ Thank you! Very glad to hear that! Hope you enjoyed it. Cheers! 👍🍷
Another great video, thank you!
Thank you! Very glad you enjoyed it.
Had a bottle of ‘82 La Mission in August, and it was amazing. New vintages selling for less than half of what a first growth goes for is insane value.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for weighing in. Agreed! This is definitely a compelling relative value.
Another great Video very informative
@@davidmarshall1873 Thank you! Appreciate the kind feedback! Cheers!
Great video as usual, thank you. In my humble opinion, the strongest contenders for 1st growths are Montrose, followed by La Mission Haut Brion, Las Cases and Palmer. Pontet Canet and Carmes Haut Brion should be (super) seconds on the brink to becoming first growths. The success story of Carmes Haut Brion began not too long ago, but the last 4 vintages have been mindblowing.
@@Den_Jeff Thanks very much! Appreciate you weighing in. 👍🍷
Brilliant. Thank you.
@@evashelton3162 Truly appreciate it! Thank you! 🍷🍷
Love your videos.
Just came back from Selva di Val Gardena and bought 3 bottles of Produttori del Barbaresco. I remember you saying you “pack up the truck” on it. Cheers!
@@pedro-ut4bz Thank you! I do for sure, particularly in strong vintages! Hope you enjoy it too! 👍🍷
I love this discussion of what should be the next First Growth. La Mission absolutely belongs in that conversation, as does Château Pichon Baron.
@@rnjbond Thank you for weighing in! Definitely a fun topic for discussion! 👍🍷
Great wine, great vid. It's a hard call so many others on the same level. But definitely a contender. I can't say that it should be part of the first growths, but I can say that none of the first growths should be removed.
@@Thesilverthunder777 Thank you! Appreciate the kind feedback! Cheers!
A no brainer first growth. Would easily be elevated. My wine group often discusses who else should be and not sure anyone else should. LLC is the best of seconds in terms of consistency. That could make sense. Montrose and Pichon Lalande next . But can we get Lynch Bages and Pontet Canet to second growth!!
@@matthewzimmer8960 Thanks for weighing in! Always fun to think about! Completely agree re Lynch Bages and Pontet Canet! Palmer should be no worse than second also.
Your video was much appreciated for the information. I really like Chateau Haut Brion and their second wine. I also had one bottle of the second wine of La Mission Haut Brion a couple of months ago that I thought was quite good.
Two years ago I bought a few bottles of the 2012 La Mission Haut Brion and finally opened one about six weeks ago. I decanted it and tried it right away and while the flavor was good, is a a bit too acidic for me. I thought that if I let it sit for over an hour that it would improve, but it didn’t. Even after two hours it didn’t really change. The flavor was good, but the finish was just too acidic for me which kind of made me unhappy.
Did I do something wrong? Should I have let it age for more years? I was very surprised that I didn’t enjoy it. Maybe I just picked a bad year? I have a couple more bottles of it and I’m wondering if I should just let it sit for longer.
Glad you enjoyed the video! That is strange re: the 2012 LMHB. While 2012 was not a strong vintage in Bordeaux, the LMHB is generally considered to be among the best wines that vintage.
But the taste profile for vintages like 2012 is a bit different from what you will find in warm vintages like 2009, 2018, etc. I tried the 2012 HB last week, so I think I know what you mean. If you are able to do so, I would give it another 4-5 years and then give it 3 hours in the decanter.
@ I will let it sit for a few more years. Thanks for the advice.
La Mission and Palmer are the only logical 1st Growth upgrades.
Thanks for weighing in! Appreciate your input.
Hello John hope you are doing well. I have a request for a future topic. There is some noise (again!) that tariffs will be imposed to wines that come from the EU. Although not clear enough, I am hearing that as it was 2016 again. As many collectors, I have quite a lot of 2023 wines futures on order and I would like to know what happens if those tariffs come to be true. I have maybe 150-170 wines ordered and if sudddenly I have to pay tariffs on them it would be very painful. Any thoughts ?
@@wren460 Great question! It is still not clear. It seems like tariffs may apply to at least some items from the EU but we don’t know how wine will be impacted yet, if at all. The tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada went into effect today. Those three are a bigger target at the moment.
@@AttorneySomm Using tariffs is always a sign of failure. Hopefully the tariffs with Canada, Mexico and China will be so destructive that the tariffs will be removed.
@ Agreed. But I wish the EU wouldn’t use them on wine from the US either.
@@AttorneySomm--EXACTLY. It's impossible to search for stories about French tariffs.
@@marknelson8724--Whose "failure"? Every (liberal)Google search starts with Trump tariffs. But he didn't start the Tariff War in 2019. The EU added a new tax(tariff) on large American technology companies, and gave illegal subsidies to Airbus jets, cutting Boeing out of Int'l markets. It's the same reason Trump added tariffs to Chinese subsidized steel(to protect US steel companies), and why Canada doesn't buy USA dairy products, and pays a premium for their own(USA subsidies on dairy).
U rock somm

@@carlhornberger1839 Thank you! Always a treat!
I'm jealous
@ Highly recommend a visit! They seem willing to accommodate more visitors than many producers of that caliber.
John, would you still recommend this wine if I want to open it in 10-12 years after vintage or am I investing a lot of money in a careless way ? Found te 2020 for $290 but I don't want to wait till 2040 +
@@thebulge6295 Absolutely! That is a steal for the 2020, which is potentially one of their best vintages ever. Can’t go wrong at that price and 10-12 years puts you in the early part of the window.
Absolutely and a few others
Thanks very much! Cheers!
Would Leoville Las Cases be a kandidate?
Yes, I definitely think it would get serious consideration.
Pichon Lalande is my candidate to be elevated. Maybe Palmer and LMHB, some say Las cases.
Thank you! I think you definitely identified some of the front-runners. I'm a huge fan of all of them. Cheers!
I'm curious about your charity..what do you love about it?
@@carlhornberger1839 What do you mean by charity?
My bad
Sorry if I misunderstood. Just was not sure what you were asking. Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

It is actually a Balmain shirt. Plus it is adorned with my lapel mic.
