I had an identical 99 that I bought new and kept for a few years. I was a new rider at the time and even took my road test on it. the folks at the DMV thought I was nuts to try and do figure 8's with that thing.
Mileage on mine greatly improved with installation of a K & N Air Filter, changing to iridium spark plugs, and using only premium fuel. Although the owner's manual recommended regular gas, in 1999 regular gasoline had 89 octane. The best way to match that is to use today's premium at 89 octane, since the current octane on today's regular is only 86 octane. My mileage is between 44 and 48 mpg, using cruise control at 70 mph, depending on terrain.

I guess it could use a sixth gear if you live in a place that allows you to drive at 80 mph plus on the highway. Its a very very smooth engine. The front shocks are a bit rough on bigger bumps. I would love someone to come out with an aftermarket stereo with a cd to replace the cassette.
