This is honestly one of the worst metal songs ever arranged. I like Death too, but good lord, 4 unrelated riffs in a row, all started by a lone guitar, in varying tempos with no thematic continuity, each potentially with the ability to introduce the verse riff but instead he puts in ALL of them- they are cool melodies and all the parts COULD deliver a sense of utility but instead by riff salading them it compromises the whole arrangement. Why three separate intro riffs starting with a drop in percussion? Any time you do that you are smashing two potential songs together. This happens when you have no internal logic to the song you are trying to write, but think your riffs are cool, and since you have no editing skills or discernment you just throw it all in. As the song progresses it only gets worse. If you step aside from the fact that you like the riffs, you’ll see the glaring flaws.

The Sound of Perseverance, and this song in particular, was my introduction to Death Metal. My older brothers would loop this record all the time when I was a young teenager and I always stuck around to listen along, glad this song is getting the recognition it deserves as a masterpiece

@@sasquatl Yeah, that's part of why I vastly prefer Sound of Perseverance over the rest of their discography. Really love his almost black metal style vocals on the album versus the more typical classic death metal vocals. Just a shame this is pretty much the only album that features this style of Chuck's vocals.
That's why I absolutely love Death's music. It goes from being all nice and melodic to sounding evil and ugly because the message behind the songs need it. R.I.P CHUCK Anyway this video is an awesome interpretation.
I still remember the first night I heard Flesh, back in 1999. It changed my life. I remember thinking he was saying “we hold the flesh” rather than “behold” and just that difference of one word changed the entire feel of the song for me. It went from straight death metal to introspection. I still hear new things every time I play it. In highschool, we used to park in the hills at night, get stoned and shut our eyes with Flesh playing. The solo section always put this picture in my head: waking up on a desert island, not knowing how you got there or where you’re going, trying to rise to your feet with the sun beating down on your face. Then the bass part is the end, the darkest point, total rock bottom. When it goes back into riff 1, it’s like a retelling of the story. Anyways 😅 Thank you for doing it due justice! As always, RIP Chuck 🤘 And yes, pls do another video on his song structure. As a musician, Chuck’s songs have always stood out to me, and their structure was always unique I feel, but so well put together. You can compare a lot of bands, but Death really stands apart.
Cheers man! That is very interesting, "we hold the flesh" does seem to change the entire meaning. I already made the video man, its up on my channel 👍👍
Flesh and the Power it Holds is probably my favorite song from Death because there is just something about it that clicks that doesn't happen with any other song. It really just has a feel and vibe and its like diving into a whole entire story. Yes the riffs, tempo changes, and the way the song is structured does fluctuate a lot and some people do find it just slapping together a riff salad but they sound cool and still connect together in a way. Masterpiece.
This video is fucking amazing, never stop talking about Death and other bands like this! You’ve explained a death metal song more thoroughly and deeply than my teachers have explained philosophical concepts 😂
I hadn’t heard much Death in a couple years, but in watching this, screaming along and air guitaring was like muscle memory. Always loved this song. You did a great job here, your channel’s got potential for greatness!!
saw this video recommended, listened to the song before watching, love at first listen. i need to listen to all death albums, i just had like 15 songs in my playlist at random that i also loved.
Thank you for taking the time for this deep analysis. This song is complex, and may take quite some time to digest, but once you understand, it's magical.
Seriously thanks for making that amazing analysis, this song have always been my favorite out of all of music and always held a special place for me. I've lost the past year of my life to a porn addiction and i'd always listen to that music at the end of the day, as it gave me hope to carry on despite failing every time. Watching this video i've shed more tears than i can count, you've perfectly described the song and gave me insight on things that despite feeling i never knew about it. Very good job! Looking forward for more material from you
this song was the first death metal song i ever liked. that fucking riff, and the way all other instruments join in, its so insane and immediately grabbed my attention. ive grown to like other songs on this album more, but this one is what started it for me
We used to play this song in a Death cover band... I did guitar&vocals so i know this song pretty well... It was one of my favourites to play&sing...the solo is one of the craziest ever, i relate to it deeply.... Brings only good memories.... I knew the jist of it, but it was nice to see the flow you took to describe it with all the little details...nice to see the love.... It is a masterpiece, underrated heavily... Thank you!
Great Video! Thanks for refreshing people's memories of what a massive talent the world lost. Chuck succumb to a brain tumor in 2001 at only 34 year's old..We are very lucky to have so much amazing material from him..
This was the first Death and death metal song I listened to. I came across a live in Eindhoven video of the song. I didn't like any scream vocals or harsh vocals in general back then. I was listening to Iron Maiden and Metallica. Then this video started with abrupt riff changes and I saw this guy having no beard, looking neat and nice. Nothing to worry about... Then it goes "AAAAAYYYY TOLD YOU ONCE!" I jumped off my seat and was like what the hell is this?????? How the hell can this nice guy sing with the most demonic scream and I happened to like it???? That was the moment my life changed. 15 years later, I saw Death To All live in Boston, with those legendary line up Gene Hoglan and others... I felt Chuck's soul in the venue with us. Best feeling ever.
This entire album was written for Control Denied, but label told Chuck they want another Death record, before they will sign his new band. At least thats what i heard.
Well if u look at his battles of cancer and his life as he matured, I think his lyrics were becoming u know his actual beliefs were becoming more I would say Christian. It has to be this cause of his intelligence, not only in his lyrics but his music, his technique. Just look at the art work of the band name of Death. Younger and more goofy but then it transitioned into a more mature design of the name. It dropped the evil or spooky little art work which I did appreciate. Rest in peace my friend.
My band use to cover Flesh and the power it holds. Yall like old thrash check out Angel Flesh. Chuck is one of my favorite musicians you can probably tell with my vocals
Very nice analysis! Another interpretation to the abrupt ending may be the same that applies to the final movement in Bartók's piano suite Out of Doors, named "The Chase" (e.g., th-cam.com/video/deDOEqha8hg/w-d-xo.html). The left hand plays a constant, tense, perpetual motif, and the only way to escape it is "breaking the cycle" violently.
Fantastic video. Really done well. Just for future reference he used the harmonic minor scale. Phrygian is not a scale. No such thing. Phrygian is a Mode. It's a mode of the Harmonic Minor Scale. 0.00001% of people care to know this. Just telling you because i'm assuming you are part of that small percentage of people who would want to know that. Keep of the good work brotha
I always thought of this song as a post-coital depression in particular and as of whole relationship theme. At first you both may be aroused of each other... But in the end it often goes as usual in ugly and unpleasant way. Moreover, if we are ignited by this very basic instinct to each other, what could we get besides disappointment and depression if we could not see beyond this animalisitc passion?
