The brass thing is the front part of cycle lamp from around 1910, and the used Carbide crystals and water to generate a flamable gas.
The gas was past to a small burner just behind the lens and ignighted. (If I remember correctly I believe it was Acetalene gas).
The small red and green lenses were so other road users could see what side they were approaching you from, I have got a good example of one.
    Happy new year! Eric

The slide on bit is a bit of a giveaway. I remember when just about all bikes came with a "male" piece on the front to accommodate a lamp.

I have been a subscriber to a U.S. metal detectorist and was amazed at the objects found dating from our Civil War era, mostly. But the finds you share from the long, long history of England has me so in awe, especially how you easily find them in the Thames! I have learned so much about the Thames and Mudlarking though my own research and thank you for your channel! I am so excited I found your channel and now subscribe!

Linda Frasca - I agree! The history of these finds is astounding. If you watch the BBC’s Antiques Road Show (original British version), people bring in things from 1600’s and 1700’s and older. The fascinating part is how nonchalant everyone is about the sheer age of their items!!! I couldn’t even find arrow heads in upstate New York anywhere near that old.

Not an expert. But it looks similar to an 1800s carriage lantern. The hole is where the holder was. The open part is the lens area. The latch lets you open the top to light a small lamp. The holes in the screw off cap has holes to allow heat and smoke to escape.

Nicole, hi. I once read that women + paticularly little girls spent hours making the straight pins. They put the tops on them + sharpened them in the grooves in a bone or log of wood. They would work through the night, then at day break, they would fasten the pins in bundles of a 100 + go out to self them for penny a bundle. Asa young woman it was a it of history thar almost broke my heart. The stories of the prison hulks do the Sam.
Thank you for being a careful historian, Nicola

    Dear Nicola,
I had a random 'youtube evening' last night and stumbled across your channel.
Ended up watching 4 episodes back to back and really enjoyed every minute!
You prompted me to look through my 'man drawer' for what I had always thought might be an old Roman coin that id found some years ago sitting on top of the soil in a freshly ploughed field in Leicestershire.
15mins later, after a little cleaning and 'googling' it turns out I have a solid bronze Egyptian coin dating back to 180 BC!!!!
    It made my night! :)
Love your channel and your presenting style.
Look forward to watching more :)

Moving away from London has stolen from me the joy of mudlarking along the Thames! I used to go with a group of friends and someone from the Museum of London who was always so fascinating to ask questions of... on my very first visit someone with me found a little face which turned out to be Byzntine and ended up being dated to around the first or second century AD... it was exciting! Pieces of Roman glass, pieces of Medieval pottery, and plenty of clay pipes! I have done some artistic things with my findings, but I love that you are doing this and sharing your adventures! Thank you so much!! x x

    Interesting as always.
As for the "I am..." It's a motor scooter name-badge from a "Lambretta 150 ld" It had a 150 cc motor, and followed the lc model.
They were manufactured between 1951-1958....so that's fairly antiquated for a scooter.

@linda cohen Yes you're right about hanging red and green lights on boats etc. But red and green mean left and right. When the lamp is lit other people will know by the colours which way it's moving. If you can see a lit lamp with a little red light then you're looking at the left side of the boat or vehicle, if it''s green then you're looking at the right side.

I see the mystery object has been identified - I recognized it as a Lucas brass, bicycle light. We had a number of them in Tadley, Hants during WWII. They used carbide & water to generate acetylene gas - we also used the carbide to blow up screw cap beer bottles (glass hand-grenades!!!)

My first impression of the mystery item, was of a ship marker lamp. Green, red and white. Red indicates port. Green starboard. White can be seen for long distances at night. The missing crystal, most likely, white. It's in the center.

I just like to think of the people that lost these items were like. What they did, how they lived, what their lives were like, what they did with their lives. It kinda reminds us how short and fleeting our own life times are, how precious time is. Cs in the end one can argue that none of it even matters anyway.

The coloured lenses are on the wrong sides to be the lamp identified. Small hole would have been where the light source came in. If it was a bike/carriage light would have had a large red lense in the hinged part. If a boat stern lamp would have had a clear large lense. Definately not a front light from anything.

May I suggest wearing some surgical gloves or equivalent. People are not beyond disposing of sludge, human, and personal medical waste in these rivers. With the recent news of flesh eating bacteria and other inflammations from natural sources, I think it prudent. A small cut or puncture wound of the skin from a discarded piece of glass could cause some issues. Just saying.

@@Aarontlondon This year alone, 1.2 million tonnes of raw sewage has been dumped into the river Thames because the Victorian sewers can't cope. Very good find! The lead ball is definitely a musket ball the sprue marks from the mold are the give away. The mystery item is a ships lamp. They would light them at night to warn other ships of the position of the boat. The one you found would be at the stern it's missing the clear glass to show the position of the boat. Red right green left clear rear. A bow lamp would have just red and green. Old nautical memorabilia is a hobby of mine. Wonder find! Thanks for sharing this with us!

I believe the brass piece you have with the green and red gems on the side are early 1850s marine brass oil lanterns used on the bow for alerting other boats of its presence, they were not used as guide lights. In 1846 the United Kingdom legislation required steam vessels to display red and green sidelights as well as a white masthead light whilst underway and a sole white light when at anchor. I can not find that exact lamp but I know that Davey & Co and Perkins both made oil lanterns for ships and boats in these early times. Being the size of your lamp I suspect it was for a yacht or sailboat. It would have had a brass lid that attached on the top with oil in a bottom basin, possibly there was the wick burner between.
I talked to an elderly gentle man who was in Merchant Marines as a young man, I was going to say he had to be in his late 80s but I have no clue how old he is and he said only way he would tell me is if I would kiss him and sorry, not today hahaha. He went on to work on a few smaller vessels all over from Sweden to Greece for a family. He said in the late 40s after the war before heading back to the States. He said that if you cleaned the corrosion out of the base of the part you have, the "gems" were the reflectors and bare in the back so light came thru them. He said the "gems" should be of glass. He said later ones around the 1900s would have been clear glass windows with the gems mounted on the sdies for yachts and sailboats, smaller vessels.
He was telling me something about a boat in a movie. I am not sure if it is "Some Like it Hot" or some other movie with Lloyd in it. I kept losing his train of thought. I refrenced several old black and white movies that he told me to see if they had them but were probably too new of yachts then to have that exact lamp.
Oh well I really loved finding out more information on this one THANK YOU FOR THE JOURNEY!!
