3:29 - When I mention that I have previously messed up a bad take on purpose. Depending on who you work with they might discourage this as they like to piece together takes. I wouldn't get in the habit of doing this for every bad take you do, but I still do it for time to time depending on how badly I messed up the take.
4:19 - When I say English, I mean English speaking not a person from England.
5:02 - When working on Japanese titles, more often than not in the Japanese dub of Japanese animation, they won't match the lip flaps as strictly as we do here in the West. My point being I had originally assumed it was a case of the Japanese doing a laugh that didn't match the lip movements and the West then dubbing the game and having to match the lip flaps which potentially would cause a weird sounding moment.

But for real though, that expansion had a shit budget, those lines he recorded were probably the only thing close to professional work they were given.

Believe me. As a Devil May Cry fan, when you know this scene in CONTEXT, it’s not meant to be humorous. But hey. Capcom has a history with bad/mediocre voice acting in their earlier titles.
I guess because it is supposed to be a sad and dramatic scene that was ruined by his yelling voice crack. The echo makes it funnier.

As a fellow Nigerian, I must say, you held at least a decent "generic stereotypical African voice" for a solid few seconds before crashing into Hadrian's Wall. I give you half a Doomfist. Which is still better than 99.999999999999% of attempts.
Fun fact: the voice clips for Resident Evil 1 were chosen by a guy who didn't speak English and just chose them based on what aesthetically sounded the best to him.

To be fair, I don't think the voice acting in that scene is bad. It's the writings fault on that.

I unironically think the 4Kids Winx Club voices are the best, at least for the main girls. Each voice was distinct and suited their personalities. Now they are all just generic and unmemorable

Considering the English word for onigiri is rice ball, I’m pretty sure young kids from western countries would be able to garner what exactly those are. It is a ball of rice, it’s not that hard to comprehend even if it’s not food their familiar with. Kids can understand basic things about foreign cultures as long as you actually bother giving them information that makes it accessible to them.
That being said, 4Kids has a tendency to write their dubs as specifically set in America when the original show is set in real life Japan rather than a fantasy world (hence the name change for the anime Tokyo Mew Mew to Mew Mew Power,) and that’s why they remove references from japanese culture entirely, even if it’s super basic stuff.

A little about the voice acting on Sonic Adventure:
-The director only spoke Japanese
- The voice actors had only a week to do their lines
- There was no air conditioning in the studio

The Tidus scene being labeled bad voice acting has always bothered me because it's supposed to be a fake laugh to lift their spirits, and it's followed by actual laughter which sounds more convincing

I hate it when people take the tidus and yuna scene out of context. It's supposed to be stiff and awkward because they are FORCING themselves to laugh despite their horrible situation.
If you watch a few seconds after they stop fake laughing you can hear them ACTUALLY laughing and it sounds fine.
For a fake forced laugh it's actually pretty good.
People often take that scene out of context and it's so annoying.

I feel like the game as a whole had some issues with the voice acting, not just the scene, but this was also from the era of the "inbetween" of the RE1 forced/rushed voice and the higher quality of more modern voice (not that there arent bad eggs now too). Overall, I felt that it was more of issues with script pacing rather than the V. Actors themselves

The Tidus thing I that he's literally forcing himself to laugh (as Yuna's suggestion), to cheer himself up. He's *supposed* to sound bad, especially when the other characters look at them weird and they both laugh, followed by Yuna saying "maybe we shouldn't laugh anymore". It's purposeful and I hate that people take it as a bad voice acting example.

It takes place after yuna sends the souls of the dead after an attack from sin, she talks to tidus about how sometimes in a more complicated situation it helps to just force yourself to laugh, then tidus laughs empathizing and I think giving an important (if cheesy) comic relief after one of the darker parts of the story

The Final Fantasy X laugh is actually really good. The characters are forcing a laugh and thats exactly what it sounds like.
EXACTLY. Thank you. People take the clip out of context and so it just looks like bad voice acting. But the scene itself is about forcing yourself to be happy when you're sad, therefore the laugh is forced
@@Konaruhi Yeah, a lot of people didn't understand that that was the intention..they were supposed to sell that they were forcing a laugh, that they were actually extremely troubled on the inside, if you take it out of context, it sounds terrible, but in context it should be obvious..especially since they are legitimately laughing directly after the fake laughing.
Its amazing to me how many people took this as Tidus and Yuna legitimately laughing..

I’m not saying the voice acting in Final Fantasy X was amazing, but an awkward laugh that had the full intention of being awkward isn’t bad acting, especially within the context of the scene. People just judge the acting in FFX solely off that scene, which isn’t fair.

Is it like jesses from pokemon? Sometimes laugher in anime sounds just incredible hammy or fake. That sounds like an akward anime laugher, a good one.

I'm pretty sure there was an element of self-awareness to the yugioh dub if that season. There were mentions by other characters that broke the forth wall, I think in the same episode actually.

The Titus laughing was actually supposed to be that way. He was trying to comfort Yuna about something I can't remember. But the cool thing is the va for Titus actually joined the joke and even said "It's meant to be bad"

The whole scene is about forcing laughter, as a coping mechanism. I think its so silly that people hold it up as a standard of bad voice acting. I think its actually great voice acting.

@Suffer No Fools Depends on his role, really.
The Creation Kit also allows you to voice act right into the interface in one unedited take when adding dialogue, and I can't imagine them making that a feature just for mod makers. It's possible that's how some of the Oblivion lines came to be, from voice actors not being briefed on how it worked. On that note, I'd love to see a voice actor review mods with bad voice acting. There's partially a pass on them not being professionals- but some of them certainly have the ego to deserve being knocked down a peg.

Thank you so much for introducing my family to Ghost stories, it has been a hilarious show we've been watching since early 2020(if I recall correctly).
The tidus "bad voice" is actually supposed to emulate laughing yoga, where you force yourself to laugh out loud so that you end up laughing for real and release your stress. Laughing yoga class actually sounds like this so its good VA

I always saw it as being intentionally bad. After all, Tidus is hardly in a mood to laugh. The whole world as he knew it was over, and the only person he thought could get him home can't. The laugh turns a bit more natural after the forced attempt in either case, so you can clearly tell the VA isn't to blame here.

Not an English dub, but I'd suggest checking out the Finnish-language dub of Digimon for some absolutely BEAUTIFUL bad voice acting
Don't forget Flipper and Lopaka.
I think the Swedish version might have been equally bad if not worse

For FFX, the context of that scene is important. Tidus tells Yuna that even if she's not happy, she can always try to make herself happy and then proceeds to do the fake laugh. It's supposed to be awkward. It's like people never played the fucking game

what's sad is that people don't realize that the Titus laughing scene.... is supposed to be like that because the characters are doing FORCED laughs to try and cheer themselves up and later on in the scene they laugh for real after making fools of themselves to loosen themselves up.
"Hey, I know you are feeling down right now... but what always makes me pep up is some forced laughter.. the brain totally doesn't know the difference"
