it's really something that NES due to it's audio being made using an programmable sound generator could afford adaptive audio. After everything switched to prerecorded CD audio we haven't really seen adaptive audio in maybe 20 years and it's only now it's starting to become a thing again.
This game is one of the rare occassions where the NES version actually improved the gameplay mechanics compared to the coin-op.Really intense and great version of Spy Hunter.
Well, it wasn't as much a conversion, as a sequel to a conversion! Possibly they came up with the game first then slapped "Spy Hunter" on the title and made a few cosmetic changes afterward.
The airship boss is the definition of patience. It takes awhile to get to it, and the battle with it is extremely long, not to mention an assload of bullets coming at you from different directions. Pretty tough game, very well designed, Sunsoft were pro's with the NES.
the gameplay desing for that boss is really bad. You actually have just one (two at max) tries to beat it, IF your vehicle is fully upgraded. After each death you loose one upgrade, so it becomes harder and harder untill your vehicle is stock, and then you have no chance to beat it
IKR. The only minus of the game was the length. I wish the game was much longer , it was unbelievable, one of my top games on nes. Used to play the hell out of it again and again , in time i became a pro , used to beat the game so much faster haha.
This game is awesome and had some really great music. Sunsoft always took advantage of the NES sound chip to make some really kickass tunes in all their games.
Saludos.
Never even knew this game existed, until now. The sound effects just scream teenage mutant Ninja turtles games. I'll bet they were made by the same gaming company.
I remember playing my first Sunsoft on NES Super Spy Hunter when I was a kid 7 years old since 2008 and music is awesome as Batman Return of the Joker and Journey to Silius
Pretty neat music, indeed. I might add this to the list of game musics I'd like to sequence (that is, music from games I *don't* have, but since listening to them from these longplays, turns out I like)!
Over land, sea, or air.... Super Spy Hunter will be there! Also FYI if you end the game early and at the continue screen you can manually control the guns by pressing the A button (I believe).. if you aim the guns downwards and hit start to continue it will take you to another screen to play pong. If you beat the computer you win I think 10 1ups to start the game.
@Bloodreign1 I have once seen a video of a Japanese gamer showing the Famicom version of Spy Hunter in pride!(called Battle Formula) At that point I knew that finding the cart on the internet is an impossibility.
Sunsoft games are very underrated, sunsoft makes nice chiptune for the nes too My main gripe with su soft games is They're excruciatingly hard games (festers quest, journey to silius, mr gimmick etc.)
I remember this game was hard as FUCKING HELL. Damned magnet boss. Damned aircraft boss. I finally got to beat the game, but it was incredibly hard for me.
Wow this game has some crazy action! I was not a fan of the original Spy Hunter so this was a pleasant surprise. Is it me or is there a lot of graphical slowdown though?
ANYONE IN THEIR MID 30'S STILL DIGGING THIS ... YES IT IS THE HARDEST SHIT EVER, HARDER THAN LIFE ITSELF ! #PROUD FEW WHO HAVE BEAT IT ... BECAUSE 8 BIT HAD NO TOOL BITCHES
Honest question, does anyone know if there are any differences between the US and Japanese versions of this game? Gameplay-wise of course. From what I can tell it looks exactly the same.
@ryanc519 You didn't mention Famicom, so I did a search through Digital Press rarity guide, US one isn't rare. Famicom one doesn't appear on ebay, and Yahoo Japan Auctions is proving hard to look through for this game, usually searches on there are easy, it is semi rare, but not Little Samson NES rare. The one I have is the NES one, same game as the FC version, just a name change basically.
i only played the 1st one for the nes and always thought it was overrated. But this one looks like fun and the music is really good and fits the spy theme. Why didn't I ever hear about this one???
As far as I remember, it was the last (or one of) game made for the NES and it didn't succeed to make itself popular. I guess it's because players started to think about other consoles, like SEGA and such.
it's also not actually a spy hunter game. in japan, it was released as "battle formula" and sold even worse. the nes cart is kind of common (twenty to thirty dollar range, right now) because using the spy hunter name (which sunsoft had the license to at the time) helped it sell on name recognition. in japan, it became one of the rarest famicom carts. also, it was released in 91 (famicom) and very early 92 (nes), we were still getting nes games into 94 and a decent bit unlicensed stuff in 95 and up. kirby's adventure was late 93 in the US and a huge hit.
Thanks a lot for mentioning that the US version isn't that expensive. I live in Japan and figured I would never be able to get it, but after reading your comment I went on ebay and got the US version complete for around $90 (I still have my American NES). Cheers!
This game was so intense for me as a kid, I never took the time to realise that the 1st boss shot the red bullets from its exhaust pipes. SSH was one of the best SNES games i had.
I like how the music changes in the middle of a stage, but the beat transitions into another song instead of just switching it. Very impressive.
it's really something that NES due to it's audio being made using an programmable sound generator could afford adaptive audio. After everything switched to prerecorded CD audio we haven't really seen adaptive audio in maybe 20 years and it's only now it's starting to become a thing again.
With awesome tracks to boot
This game is one of the rare occassions where the NES version actually improved the gameplay mechanics compared to the coin-op.Really intense and great version of Spy Hunter.
Well, it wasn't as much a conversion, as a sequel to a conversion! Possibly they came up with the game first then slapped "Spy Hunter" on the title and made a few cosmetic changes afterward.
More specifically in japan it was game inspired by Spy Junter called Battle Formula J, but got localized as a Spy Hunter sequel
the levels are really good, but the boss fights are next level
Oh the memories ! This was one of my favorite game in the mid. 90's xD
The airship boss is the definition of patience. It takes awhile to get to it, and the battle with it is extremely long, not to mention an assload of bullets coming at you from different directions. Pretty tough game, very well designed, Sunsoft were pro's with the NES.
I'd say it's the definition of a badass NES boss. GOOOD I love this boss, and this whole game! :D
the gameplay desing for that boss is really bad. You actually have just one (two at max) tries to beat it, IF your vehicle is fully upgraded. After each death you loose one upgrade, so it becomes harder and harder untill your vehicle is stock, and then you have no chance to beat it
Sunsoft has the most awesome music on the nes
Its like nfs of nes sir
Feel like nfs
Tim Follin: Hold my beer.
konami, sunsoft, capcom and tecmo, and yeah obviously anything by tim follin
My favorite Sunsoft NES soundtrack was Super Spy Hunter, Route 16 and Batman Return of the Joker
I think its a no.1 2D car game in the world ever...sound and music ... matched 😊 anybody who built this game...u r deserved respect...🎉
Please tell me I'm not the only one who hears the Batman boss music in the Super Spy Hunter boss music.
Batman "Return of the Joker" Creo que es la misma compañía Sunsoft.... Maybe it's the same company Sunsoft...
I am also hearing the music from Ha-Ha-Hacienda Island also from "Return of the Joker."
Music of stages 3 and 5 were just EPIC.
Also the shift that each stage takes made things really exciting
Sunsoft really killed it in the sound department ever since they released Batman for the NES.
I strongly agree! Listen to them drums!
I would argue Blaster Master
Easily among the top 5 shooters on the nes. Awesome soundtrack, too!
You could mistake this for a Mega Drive game, the graphics are THAT good.
Also, it was the first NES game I played for myself. God, that big rig boss!
This games gets so hard later on.. Damn memories! Played it like a pro
IKR. The only minus of the game was the length. I wish the game was much longer , it was unbelievable, one of my top games on nes. Used to play the hell out of it again and again , in time i became a pro , used to beat the game so much faster haha.
This game is awesome and had some really great music. Sunsoft always took advantage of the NES sound chip to make some really kickass tunes in all their games.
sounds exactly like Batman Return of The Joker. Some of the graphics on the turns are so smooth. like 7:20 looks like mode 7 shit.
IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR 20 YEARS
I HAVE PLAYED THIS LIKE THERES NO TOMORROW WHEN I WAS KID
Each transformation design, gets me hyped up. They should come up with a movie, based on these designs! And let’s not forget about the jet.
There's just so many childhood games that I've never beaten.
The Few, The Proud, The One Who Beat That Game!
The game is extremely tough just to have a super easy final boss like wtf!
This game is actually known as "Battle Formula" in Japan and was made a Spy Hunter game after Sunsoft signed a deal with Bally Midway.
Never even knew this game existed, until now. The sound effects just scream teenage mutant Ninja turtles games. I'll bet they were made by the same gaming company.
lvl 2 bgm like a peter gunn theme
I've never beated the boss at 15:49 as a kid.
This video was like major spoiler after that lol
this is one of the best games in NES
Super Spy Hunter is an upgrade of the original NES hit, which promises more action and better special effects.
I love how the "airplane" boss opens its inside to reveal its engine to cool it off.
One of the top best games for NES
Super spy hunter is a classic Nintendo game with a vengeance
I never got past the jet aircraft stage so it's really great to see finally what came after that. The boss on that level was a pain in the ass.
I like how the screen turns darker when you pause the game, just like some 16 bit games.
I only started playing this just now. It is harder than the hardest shit you ever took.
No, it's not. Just play Ghosts'n'Goblins, you will understand..
I remember playing my first Sunsoft on NES Super Spy Hunter when I was a kid 7 years old since 2008 and music is awesome as Batman Return of the Joker and Journey to Silius
Beaten this game when was kid, amazing game, warm memories.
Ese Soundtrack Espectacular!!!
I played alot this game when i was a kid,i love the music, graphs and gameplay :P
i don't know how the hell i have managed to finish this game in the 90s , it seem so hard right now
This is basically Contra in a car.
the airship uses melee atacks
i remember when first stage, my car was blue, cause i consume P 4 or 5 times, and L once
Pretty neat music, indeed. I might add this to the list of game musics I'd like to sequence (that is, music from games I *don't* have, but since listening to them from these longplays, turns out I like)!
9:28 trippy
Weird. Looks like a pretty cool NES game with good graphics for the system. Yet I've never heard of it before
19:22 most epic thing to me
And the boss after :D
The stage bosses are the biggest sprites seen in a NES game? Lots of memories although i couldn't complete it.
So nostalgic!
Don't know about the Pong game, but the game has a hidden roulette game inside of it.
Good old days. Favourite. :)
Thanks the up! Subscribed ;)
Keep on!
If there's anything I hate worse then falling from heights, its falling from heights in a car while helicopters are shooting at me.
This game deserves a more interesting longplay
awesome!, waited to see the end of it for the past 10 years :D
i remember playing this game when i was 10. If it came to XBL i would buy it real fast
I like this game
Awesome play gentleman
This game was everything in my living room, I lived for the blue car lol, though I still never made it past the desert
@Bloodreign1 I have once seen a video of a Japanese gamer showing the Famicom version of Spy Hunter in pride!(called Battle Formula) At that point I knew that finding the cart on the internet is an impossibility.
@Neomysterion the famicom version is nearly non-existent in the market. That's really what I have been searching for.
14:22 Alpine: Wish we have such day!(In fact: Red Bull)
Sunsoft games are very underrated, sunsoft makes nice chiptune for the nes too
My main gripe with su soft games is They're excruciatingly hard games (festers quest, journey to silius, mr gimmick etc.)
This, Batman, Fester's Quest and Blaster Master...all Sunsoft games with great fuckin music and gameplay, but all hard as fuck too
I remember this game was hard as FUCKING HELL. Damned magnet boss. Damned aircraft boss. I finally got to beat the game, but it was incredibly hard for me.
Still, Stage 2's music has bits of Spy Hunter mixed into it. To me, I find that commendable.
Back then when I was in kindergarten, I didn't know what 'stop' is😂😂
So always stuck on stage 6, now I can finish it 😉
best nes game
Wow this game has some crazy action! I was not a fan of the original Spy Hunter so this was a pleasant surprise. Is it me or is there a lot of graphical slowdown though?
Had no idea this even existed!
They look like cannons, but I never saw them firing, I think it's like a decoration in a way, don't know for sure
finally found it!!! after how many years 🤣🤣🤣
This game is awesome and I know glitch of this any u do your life always full press up and pause button

finally found it ... almost 31 🤣🤣
SUPER NES
Was Sunsoft a company under Konami? I know ultra was, Sunsoft kick so much ass back in the day. Never disappointed
No, Sunsoft was it's own company, no relation in any way to Konami. Natsume was started with former Konami employees, so was Treasure.
awesome music, awesome game =)
The 3 stage WAS THE MOST annoying when i played it in my childhood i never beated the third boss
Honest question, does anyone know if there are any differences between the US and Japanese versions of this game? Gameplay-wise of course. From what I can tell it looks exactly the same.
Techno Breakers Inc
As far as I know - there is no difference.
I admire you . This game so hard with me.
on of my favourite on nes... and I see.... Im not alone with this opinion...
@ryanc519 You didn't mention Famicom, so I did a search through Digital Press rarity guide, US one isn't rare. Liu oh ok like little samson

i really hope you enjoy it! if you were to consider it an stg, i'd say it's the best on the console, even above gradius 2, crisis force, etc.
double shot at the end ^^
I wish they had Sofia-III as a playable car
19:22 There is an A-10 Thunderbolt in this game?!
Basically a shoot-em up if you remove road tracks
Best game on nes or almost best
very nice
@ValisHD hmmmmmm..... not a bad idea dude !! =D
This game was so intense for me as a kid, I never took the time to realise that the 1st boss shot the red bullets from its exhaust pipes.
SSH was one of the best SNES games i had.
